Where to Drink Wine in Madrid
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Eric Asimov | More About Eric Asimov | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To many tourists, Madrid is kind of an afterthought, Spain’s second city after Barcelona, which, in their minds, abounds with youthful energy, quirky architecture, a thriving arts scene, beautiful beaches and superb restaurants. But Madrid, with its relaxed disposition, warm generosity and excellent museums, is full of wonderful restaurants that are great places to drink wine. I was thrilled by the breadth and variety I found in many places, which went far beyond the deep selections of Spanish wines that I remember on earlier trips. Like so much of the world, Madrid has fallen in love with Burgundy and Champagne, with many excellent bottles at prices far below what I’d expect to pay in New York. That goes for Spanish wines, too.

YAMHILL, Ore. — Before I make an argument about affirmative action, let me tell you how I was a beneficiary of it. I wasn’t a student of color, but I grew up on a farm and attended a small, rural high school where there wasn’t much math and nobody had ever applied to an Ivy League college. Elite colleges were looking for farm kids from low-income areas to provide diversity. I wish the Supreme Court had ruled differently on affirmative action for race, but unfortunately it blocked that path for diversity. My fear is that we will all throw up our hands and sit around blaming the court, rather than actually working to overhaul a disgracefully unequal education system.

Although many stars will miss the traditional red carpet openings for big studio productions, Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera still managed to attract a slew of top movies to the Lido. The world's oldest film festival, regarded as a launchpad for Oscar contenders as awards season approaches, features movies from 55 countries, including 23 titles running for the prestigious Golden Lion award. The SAG-AFTRA guild called the strike this month after failing to reach an agreement with studios on a new three-year contract. Barbera said he hoped stars of smaller independent movies would be able to publicise their work in person regardless of the stoppage. Both Allen, with his French language picture "Coup De Chance", and Polanski, with "The Palace" will show out of competition.

CNN —The cause of death for British actor Julian Sands, who went missing in the mountains of Southern California in January and was later found dead, has been cited as “undetermined,” CNN has confirmed. “The cause is ‘Undetermined’ due to the condition of the body and because no other factors were discovered during the coroner’s investigation, this is common when dealing with cases of this type. This is the final determination,” Mara Rodriguez, public information officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner Department, told CNN in a statement on Monday. Last month, human remains found in the San Gabriel mountains were determined to be those of Sands, CNN confirmed at the time. Weather conditions had hindered search efforts in the weeks following his disappearance, but officials announced a renewed effort to locate Sands in June.

The service will compete with private sector real-time payments systems, including The Clearing House's RTP network, and was initially opposed by big banks who said it was redundant. Unlike peer-to-peer payments services like Venmo or PayPal, which act as intermediaries between banks, payments made via FedNow will settle directly in central bank accounts. The Fed also operates a real-time payments system called FedWire, but that's reserved for large-scale, mostly corporate payments and is only operational during business hours. While the new FedNow system is for everyone, it's likely to benefit consumers and small businesses the most, analysts have said. But Fed officials have downplayed those concerns, arguing that banks have tools available to mitigate a wave of outflows.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday stressed his belief that diversification is key to a successful portfolio. Cramer looked at the strategies of ARK 's Cathie Wood and BlackRock 's Larry Fink to explain why he thinks diversification is usually the best strategy for long-term gains. Cramer said Wood's primary investment style is to get a few stocks she feels have the highest potential. "That's the danger of running an undiversified portfolio: You have to be right every time, or else your investors, they get obliterated," Cramer said. Fink, however, prioritizes diversification, Cramer said, adding that BlackRock is the world's largest asset manager, with $9.4 trillion in holdings.
