DAJABON, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic partially reopened its border with Haiti on Wednesday to limited commercial activity nearly a month after shuttering the frontier in a continuing spat over construction of a canal targeting water from a shared river. The Dominican border reopening was delayed after a pre-dawn fire at the main marketplace in Dajabon destroyed dozens of stalls. The price gains are most felt in Greater Los Angeles, where home prices increased 23.8% over the 12 months ending in September 2023, according to Realtor.com data released Thursday. The talks between President Nicolas Maduro's government and the opposition are meant to find solutions to Venezuela's long-running political and economic crisis. The opposition will repeat its long-standing petition for release of political prisoners and guarantees for an election slated for 2024, two sources close to preparations for the talks said. Envoys from Caracas and Washington have met several times in Doha since last year in separate conversations, according to other sources with knowledge of those talks, but Venezuela's opposition did not directly participate. One source said the Venezuelan government had broadly discussed electoral issues at the Qatar talks, but had not entered into detail about guarantees. The United States announced on Thursday it will restart deportations of Venezuelans who cross the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully, an agreement two of the sources said was achieved during the Doha talks.

"I expect it will likely be appropriate for the (Fed) to raise rates further and hold them at a restrictive level for some time to return inflation to our 2 percent goal in a timely way," Bowman said in prepared remarks to the Connecticut Bankers Association. The comments were largely identical to those Bowman made on Monday about the economic and policy outlook. Bowman, one of the Fed's most hawkish policymakers, said the latest employment report reflected "solid" job growth.
