Russian intelligence services are building up their presence in Mexico for spy operations targeting the United States, a return to Cold War tactics by an increasingly aggressive regime, according to U.S. officials and former intelligence officers. The Mexican Embassy and the Russian Embassy did not respond to a request for comment. “Part of this is a function of the fact that so many Russian intelligence officers have been kicked out of Europe. Those are Russian intelligence personnel, and they keep an eye very closely on their opportunities to have influence on U.S. opportunities and access,” VanHerck said. A fire that erupted from a Texas natural gas pipeline that was struck by a vehicle died down and was extinguished Thursday, the city of Deer Park said. A car struck the Energy Transfer pipeline on Monday and caused the fire, which sent a geyser of flame into the air and caused nearby homes to be evacuated, officials said. That burned vehicle and human remains were found Thursday, the city said. Evacuation orders had covered nearly 1,000 homes and businesses in La Porte, which is just to the east of Deer Park. The fire erupted around 10 a.m. Monday, and by Thursday night Energy Transfer said that it had extinguished, Deer Park said.

CNN —The US is expected to announce a major weapons package to Ukraine as soon as next week, but it will likely delay the shipping of the equipment due to inventory shortages, according to two US officials. The US currently has $5.9 billion left in Presidential Drawdown Authority for Ukraine, the Pentagon said this week, which is set to expire at the end of the fiscal year in less than two weeks. Presidential drawdown packages were initially intended as a way of supplying Ukraine with arms and equipment in the short-term since the start of the war with Russia. More sophisticated equipment with long production times was sent through another mechanism – the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative – that purchased weapons directly from arms manufacturers for future delivery. China and Russia have condemned the first deployment of the system to the Indo-Pacific, accusing Washington of fueling an arms race. The deployment, some details of which have not been previously reported, comes as China and U.S. defense treaty ally the Philippines clash over parts of the hotly contested South China Sea. Philippine officials said Filipino and U.S. forces continued to train with the missile system, which is on the northern island of Luzon, facing the South China Sea and is close to the Taiwan Strait. A Philippine army spokesman, Colonel Louie Dema-ala, on Wednesday said training was ongoing and it was up to Philippine authorities and the United States Army Pacific to decide how long the missile system would stay.
