Gregg Berhalter was coach of the U.S. men’s team during the 2022 World Cup. An independent investigation commissioned by U.S. Soccer has found that the family of star men’s national team member Gio Reyna tried to dissuade the federation from renewing U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter in the job. The report, published Monday, examines the bizarre fallout from Berhalter’s decision to bench Gio Reyna, one of the team’s up and coming talents, at the 2022 World Cup. Reyna’s parents—the former U.S. men’s captain Claudio Reyna and former women’s national team player Danielle Egan—were upset about Gio’s lack of playing time in Qatar and resented Berhalter’s revelation after the tournament that the problem had been Gio’s attitude.
March 14 (Reuters) - Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company backed by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), on Tuesday released a large language model that competes directly with offerings from Microsoft Corp-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Large language models are algorithms that are taught to generate text by feeding them human-written training text. Anthropic has taken a different approach, giving Claude a set of principles at the time the model is "trained" with vast amounts of text data. Rather than trying to avoid potentially dangerous topics, Claude is designed to explain its objections, based on its principles. That's one of the reasons we liked Anthropic," Richard Robinson, chief executive of Robin AI, a London-based startup that uses AI to analyze legal contracts that Anthropic granted early access to Claude, told Reuters in an interview.

Iowa could be particularly crucial for DeSantis, who is expected to jump into the 2024 White House race later in the spring. Addressing a welcoming crowd at a casino in Davenport, Iowa, DeSantis boasted about his policy record in Florida and blasted the Democratic Biden administration on issues such as crime and immigration. Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party, believes Iowa voters are eager to hear from DeSantis, who polls show to be Trump's biggest rival for the nomination. Randy Yaddof, 71, of Davenport described himself as a Trump supporter but said after listening to DeSantis he was considering backing the Florida governor. A Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll released on Friday showed declining favorability ratings for Trump among Iowa Republicans.

Iowa could be particularly crucial for DeSantis, who is expected to jump into the 2024 White House race later in the spring. The state will hold the first Republican nominating contest early next year, and a win there would show DeSantis is a viable candidate against Trump. DeSantis will appear at events in Des Moines, the state capital, and the river town of Davenport that will be moderated by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party, believes Iowa voters are eager to hear from DeSantis, who polls show to be Trump's biggest rival for the nomination. But the Midwestern state will remain as the first electoral test for Republican presidential candidates.

On Sundays, he asks me to leave the house so that he can commence on what he calls "Deep Clean Day." A majority of women (59%) say they do more chores than their partner, while 6% say their partner does more, according to a Pew Research Center survey. But in the five years that we've lived together, Brian has always preferred to do the cleaning. How we split household choresWe came up with our division of chores together by asking four questions: What do we each enjoy doing? And it doesn't need to, because we assign ourselves to the tasks that we can stand, and avoid the ones that we dread.
When former U.S. women’s chess champion Jennifer Shahade alleged on social media last month that she had been sexually assaulted by a prominent grandmaster named Alejandro Ramirez, she had no idea it would set off a broad wave of additional allegations. Ms. Shahade says she was sexually assaulted twice by Mr. Ramirez, one of the most recognizable faces in American chess over the past two decades. Her allegations and others in recent years were reported to top chess bodies, including the U.S. Chess Federation and the powerful St. Louis Chess Club, which failed to act or effectively investigate when first learning of them, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
The Red Bull Formula 1 team spent most of last season wondering when Mercedes, the dominant force of the sport’s recent history, would finally show signs of life. Though Red Bull had pulled ahead, it was braced for a counterattack. But as the 2022 season progressed, team principal Christian Horner couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing. Mercedes just kept dropping further back in the rearview mirror.
LONDON—When Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund took a majority interest in English soccer team Newcastle United in 2021, the Premier League set out a clear condition before approving the sale. Newcastle, the league said, couldn’t in any way be controlled by the government of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Public Investment Fund assured the league that the team’s operations would be free of state influence, despite the fund’s chairman being Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
March 2 (Reuters) - Two Americans were arrested in Kansas City on Thursday for an alleged scheme to send aviation-related technology to Russia in violation of U.S. export controls. The defendants are charged with conspiracy, exporting controlled goods without a license, falsifying and failing to file export information, and smuggling goods contrary to U.S. law. The U.S. imposed additional restrictions on avionics after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, along with controls on other goods targeting Russia's defense, aerospace and maritime sectors. The controls were later expanded to include Russia’s oil refining, industrial and commercial sectors, and luxury goods. Confused delivery drivers add time, cost, and frustration to deliveries. Tech companies are looking to close the data gap between an address and a completed delivery. The English tech company throws out traditional addresses and instead divides the world into a grid of 10-foot by 10-foot squares. In a delivery scenario, the drive receives the code, which identifies the grid square containing the entrance as opposed to the traditional address. Pooling local knowledgeBeans.ai is another company that's looking to cut down on wasted time and emissions with more precise address data — but this time built with shoe leather.

Toto Wolff was at the Miami Grand Prix last spring, gazing out at the most sophisticated cars in the world racing around the sun-baked, palm-fringed circuit, when a jarring realization hit him like a bucket of cold water at 180 mph. His Mercedes team, Formula One’s eight-time defending constructors’ champion and arguably the greatest dynasty in modern sports history, wasn’t just off the pace. It was completely uncompetitive. The run of dominance that he had helped to build as Mercedes team principal was coming to a definitive conclusion. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton would finish the season without a single Grand Prix victory for the first time in his entire career.

Shares in the giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) rose 2.2% to lift Taiwan's benchmark (.TWII) 1.3%. A 4% gain for SK Hynix (000660.KS) and a 2% gain for Samsung (005930.KS) drove South Korea's Kospi (.KS11) 1% higher. The Bank of Korea also offered some relief by ending a year-long run of uninterrupted rate hikes with a pause - as expected. Wall Street indexes fell overnight and are eyeing their worst week of the year so far as stronger-than-forecast U.S. labour, inflation, retail sales and manufacturing figures have traders pricing interest rates staying higher for longer. "Markets have been forced to reprice interest rate expectations, not just higher, but also questioning the view that once peak rates are hit, central banks will pivot quickly to cutting interest rates," said ANZ economist Finn Robinson.

Oil nursed sharp overnight losses, and Brent crude futures clung to support around $80 a barrel on Thursday. "Markets have been forced to reprice interest rate expectations, not just higher, but also questioning the view that once peak rates are hit, central banks will pivot quickly to cutting interest rates," said ANZ economist Finn Robinson. The Bank of Korea did, however, offer some dose of relief by ending a year-long run of uninterrupted rate hikes with a pause.
Manchester United has received two public offers and several more private proposals. Three months after announcing that they were open to selling one of the most prized assets in sports, the Glazer family received a set of preliminary bids for soccer giant Manchester United before a deadline on Friday evening. Though two were made public by the bidders, several more offers poured in for both partial stakes in the club and to acquire the team outright, according to a person familiar with the process. United itself hasn’t commented on the sale process since the initial deadline on Friday, and the valuations of the bids aren’t known. The multiple offers—including one from the chairman of a Qatar bank and the other from a British billionaire—could put the Glazers in a position to capitalize on a hot market that has recently pushed the valuation of top sports properties to new record highs.
Police officers involved in the deaths have become an intense focus of investigation, protest, and media coverage. Despite being at the heart of some of the most defining incidents in modern policing, most of the officers involved continue to live their lives under the radar. Insider's review of 72 cops involved in two dozen of the most notorious police killings of the past 30 years shows the many different paths officers have taken. There's no nationwide view into what happens to officers involved in egregious incidents of violence. In rare cases, cops involved in these killings have tried to publicly rehabilitate their image rather than seek out anonymity.

The England skipper's 31 included his 108th six to take him past his coach Brendon "Baz" McCullum as the most prolific scorer of the maximum in test cricket history. Wagner could have dismissed him on the next delivery but his miserable day continued when he caught the England skipper on the boundary only to fall over the rope and give Stokes his 109th test six.
