The battery of an electric car is recharged at a roadside charging station on January 09, 2024 in London, England. Britain is forecast to hit "peak petrol" in 2024, according to a new report, with electric vehicles (EVs) on track to assume a much bigger share of the country's car market. The online vehicle platform estimates there were 18.7 million gasoline-powered cars on the country's roads in 2024, although this figure is expected to steadily decline to just 11.1 million by 2034. At the same time, it is expected the number of EVs on Britain's roads will soar to 13.7 million over the next decade as affordability improves, up from 1.25 million in 2024. "Peak petrol is a genuine landmark for the UK," Auto Trader's Ian Plummer said in the report.

Since the early stages of Syria's bloody civil war that began in 2011, Iran has supported Syria's strongman president, Bashar Assad. Advancing in the face of Russian and Syrian airstrikes, they overran Syria's fourth-largest city, Hama, on Thursday. Earlier in the Syrian conflict, Iran helped orchestrate interventions on Assad's side by its powerful Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in 2013, and Russia in 2015. While Iran will undoubtedly remain committed to supporting Assad, it's unlikely to prove capable of organizing a 2016-style counteroffensive to recapture Aleppo. Century's Lund recalled that the last time Iran intervened to help Assad recapture Aleppo, it did so in close collaboration with Russia.

Growth in pockets from real estate to manufacturing has improved since Beijing began announcing stimulus measures in late September. China's latest efforts to kickstart growth haven't had a broad impact yet, data and company earnings show, indicating the world's second-largest economy won't be roaring back soon. The ramp-up in stimulus measures is aimed at reaching this year's official target of around 5%, and a similar pace next year — while preventing financial instability, Gabriel Wildau, managing director at Teneo, said in a note Monday. "Looking ahead, our sources expect that stimulus in 2025 will trickle out incrementally and in a data-dependent fashion," Wildau said. "Beijing's stimulus measures encouraged firms to come off the sidelines this month," the report said.

When traveling to Scottsdale in the spring, I should have planned for dry, 90-degree Fahrenheit days. Joey Hadden/Business InsiderFor my spring trip to Scottsdale, I expected it to be warm, as the area is known to be throughout the year. It was warmer than I anticipated, and this dark navy outfit made me feel like a magnet to the sun. I also didn't realize that the heat in Scottsdale would feel drastically drier to me compared to the air I'm used to back home in New York. I planned to spend most daylight hours exploring outdoors and walking from neighborhood to neighborhood.

Oil prices rose on Thursday ahead of an OPEC+ meeting later in the day, with investors waiting to see what the producer group would do next on supply cuts while also monitoring tension in the Middle East. OPEC+ has been looking to phase out supply cuts through next year. "The OPEC+ decision may prompt a short-term reaction, but the oil market is likely to rise by year-end on expectations of a U.S. economic recovery under the Trump administration and ongoing Middle East tensions," he said. A larger-than-expected draw in U.S. crude stockpiles last week also provided some support to prices. U.S. crude stocks fell more than expected last week as refiners ramped up operations, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said.

AdvertisementBaby boomers were hit the hardest by inflation in 2023, driven by rising healthcare costs. Healthcare costs outpaced overall inflation, and they make up a greater share of boomers' budgets compared to younger Americans. The analysis found that mounting healthcare costs, which have outpaced broader inflation, particularly weighed on baby boomers, who are aged 60 to 78. Simultaneously, older Americans did not spend as much on things like gas, where costs deflated. Over 2,000 older Americans told BI their biggest regrets over the last few months in a voluntary, informal survey.

CNN —The world’s oldest known wild bird has sparked “special joy” among scientists after she laid an egg – her first in four years – at the age of 74. Wisdom, a Laysan albatross, was spotted with the egg and a new partner last week at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, an island sanctuary located on the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. A video posted on USFWS’ Facebook page showed Wisdom rubbing her head against her new partner before he sat down to incubate the egg. Biologists spotted Wisdom at Midway Atoll in 2001 with a red band around her leg that they later discovered was placed there by the late renowned ornithologist Chandler Robbins in 1956. Each year, millions of albatrosses return to Midway Atoll to nest and raise their young, according to USFWS.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing impeachment by parliament after a series of shocking moves that saw him briefly declare martial law in the country for the first time in nearly 50 years. South Korea's main opposition party, the Democratic Party, along with others, submitted the articles of impeachment on Wednesday, responding to what the DPK leader called an "unconstitutional and illegal declaration of martial law." If Yoon's impeachment is passed by parliament it moves to South Korea's Constitutional Court, which must then rule on whether to confirm or reject the impeachment. The leader of Yoon's ruling People Power Party said Thursday that he plans to unite his party to block the motion to impeach. In emails sent to NBC News, Yoon's office has maintained that his call for martial law was constitutional.

Paraguay is the only nation in South America and one of just 12 worldwide that recognizes Taiwan as a country. “It is either China or Taiwan,” he said. China’s trade with South America has grown exponentially in recent years, reaching nearly $500 billion as of 2023, according to data from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. The data comes from GoodRx's new Weight Loss Medications Tracker, which examines fill trends and spending patterns in the U.S. for popular weight loss medications. But Marsh said out-of-pocket costs can add up, even if a patient has insurance coverage for a weight loss treatment. GoodRx said people without insurance can save an average of $250 monthly, or $3,000 annually, using its coupons for weight loss drugs. The federal Medicare plan also doesn't cover weight loss treatments unless they are approved and prescribed for another health condition. But the Biden administration in November proposed a rule that would allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight loss drugs for patients with obesity.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday reflected on bitcoin 's rapid ascent — and while he praised the currency's value, he said it's unwise not to also include stocks in a portfolio. "While we could become the bitcoin network, especially since President-elect [Donald] Trump christened us as the bitcoin nation, I actually think there's more to investing than just owning cryptocurrencies," he said. Cramer listed several stocks that, like bitcoin, have had huge gains on the market this year, including Palantir , Tesla , Costco and Nvidia . "I say own them both — stocks and crypto," Cramer said. "That way, if Trump ever gets around to saying you have to buy Tesla, well, you got the edge on him."
