R.O. Kwon’s Jade Rings
  + stars: | 2024-06-15 | by ( Amelia Diamond | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Two jade rings in particular, passed down by her mother, serve as a direct line and source of comfort. Ms. Kwon, an award-winning author, wanted to be a Christian pastor or a religious recluse when she was growing up. She had, as she put it, “what felt like a conversation with the Lord going.” But she lost her faith as a teenager. Now, in her writing, Ms. Kwon explores the challenge of questioning long-held beliefs. Her first novel, “The Incendiaries,” tackled religion, while her second, “Exhibit,” out last month, is about hidden desire.

Would anybody like to see him as vice president?” Trump asked the crowd. Trump’s attempts to court Black voters come as polls show that Black men are more open to supporting the Republican nominee in this year’s election than they have historically been. Trump won roughly 1 in 10 Black voters nationally in 2020, according to multiple estimates, including 12% in CNN’s exit poll. He’s the king of the ‘super predators,’” Trump said during the roundtable discussion. “President Trump is not your typical politician,” Carson said.

The second-quarter estimated tax deadline for 2024 is June 17, and you could owe a penalty if you don't send a payment, according to the IRS. You typically owe estimated tax payments for income without withholdings, such as from contract jobs, freelancing or gig economy work, or if you run a small business. But quarterly estimated tax payments are not just for the self-employed or small business owners, experts say. You must make quarterly estimated tax payments if you expect to have at least $1,000 in tax liability or more on your 2024 return. For the 2024 tax year, the estimated tax deadlines are April 15, June 17, Sept. 16 and Jan. 15, 2025.

Opinion | When Churches Cancel Their Own
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Day My Old Church Canceled Me,” by David French (column, June 10):Mr. French’s discussion of the day his church canceled him is a stunning exposition of the extreme polarization in our society. What has happened to the right to think differently, to disagree and to engage in reasoned discourse? To the Editor:I enjoy reading David French’s thoughtful columns even though I, an atheist, don’t always agree with him. He has helped teach me to keep my heart open to those I might consider political opponents. So I was heartbroken to read his recent piece about the attacks and abandonment his family suffered at their former church.

I believe it is profoundly wrong, in difficult times like these, to campaign using a precious forum like the G7,” Meloni told reporters Thursday. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomes US President Joe Biden to the G7 summit, June 13, 2024. The 2023 G7 communique, released after the last summit in Hiroshima, Japan, called for “access to safe and legal abortion and post abortion care.” Previous summits’ communiques had stopped short of using the word “abortion,” calling instead for access to sexual and reproductive health services. The spat between Meloni and Macron comes after France in March became the world’s first country to enshrine abortion rights in its constitution, the culmination of an effort which began in direct response to the US Supreme Court’s decision to roll back abortion rights in America. The same sensibility is not shared in your country today,” Macron told an Italian journalist at the summit.

Ben Ingebretson was a reliable Republican voter. A Christian minister who works for a faith-based nonprofit, Mr. Ingebretson said he shared Republicans’ small-government views and agreed with the party’s calls for fiscal conservatism. But after Donald J. Trump became the face of the party, Mr. Ingebretson, who lives in Grand Rapids, Mich., drifted away from his political roots. In 2020, he voted for President Biden. And in February, he was among the 34 percent of voters in his county who cast ballots for Nikki Haley in the Republican primary, even though her presidential campaign seemed doomed before the Michigan election.

A simple principle underpins a contentious Thursday decision by the U.S. and key allies to tap profits from Russian sovereign assets in support of Ukraine: Moscow must make reparations. Questions have also been raised over the legality of setting such a precedent: Russia has been cut off from its frozen assets, but retains their ownership. The proposal must now pass various legal hurdles and be backed by European states, where the majority of frozen Russian assets are held. Further loans secured against the interest accrued by Russian frozen assets could be forthcoming, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen signaled on Thursday. The annual summit comes as most of the G7 leaders face their own domestic upheavals including national elections and falling approval ratings.

We all know, or perhaps have been, that colleague who vents to their co-workers about how stressed they are. People who brag about their stress levels at work are seen as 'less competent and less warm' by their peers, researchers found. This is because they can seem out-of-touch with their colleagues, says Jennifer Gunsaullus, a sociologist and relationship expert. "It feels self-absorbed," Gunsaullus says. With her prosecution of former President Donald J. Trump bottled up in a state appeals court fight, the Georgia district attorney who brought the case pushed back at her conservative critics on Thursday, appearing to single out recent remarks made about her by Mr. Trump’s co-defendant Rudolph W. Giuliani. At a recent stop on the ReAwaken America tour, a right-wing Christian event, Mr. Giuliani referred to the district attorney, Fani T. Willis, as a “ho,” using a stylized version of the word “whore” borrowed from the African American vernacular. He also said he chose to deliberately mispronounce Ms. Willis’s first name as “Fanny,” as opposed to the proper pronunciation, “FAHN-ee.”Ms. Willis spoke on Thursday to leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, who were meeting at a church in Marietta, Ga.“I’ve lived the experience of a Black woman who is attacked and over-sexualized,” she said. “See, I’m so tired of hearing these idiots call my name as ‘Fanny,’ in a way to attempt to humiliate me. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has omitted at least three private jet trips gifted by Republican megadonor Harlan Crow from his annual financial disclosures, a top Senate Democrat alleged Thursday. Those trips included private flights in 2017, 2019 and 2021 that Thomas failed to disclose, according to Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin of Illinois. The Senate probe of the Supreme Court "makes it crystal clear that the highest court needs an enforceable code of conduct, because its members continue to choose not to meet the moment," Durbin said in a statement. Spokespeople for Thomas and the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment. Thomas said in his latest disclosure that those two trips were "inadvertently omitted" at the time.

Now, a new study that looked at 5 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy suggests that seven candidates could potentially be hosting Dyson spheres — a finding that’s attracting scrutiny and alternate theories. If Dyson spheres really exist, what could they be used for? “Freeman Dyson said that we should dismantle Jupiter — the whole planet (for the raw materials).”That supercolossal scale probably means that Dyson spheres, if they exist at all, are very rare. “However, contamination by circumstellar debris disks, which mimic Dyson Sphere infrared signatures, remains a concern,” he added in an email. However, he added, the radiation fingerprint of the seven Dyson sphere candidates might be explained by natural phenomena as well.

Blinken told reporters from Doha on Wednesday that Hamas has not agreed to a US-backed ceasefire proposal because it wants to make "numerous changes," despite the deal being "virtually identical" to one Hamas had previously accepted.

US bus company Coach files for bankruptcy to sell its business
  + stars: | 2024-06-12 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Coach USA, the operator of Megabus and other commuter bus lines in the US and Canada, filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware late Tuesday, seeking to sell its assets and shed debt incurred in an ill-timed 2019 private equity buyout. Coach, the largest privately owned bus company in the US, was acquired by private equity firm Variant Equity Advisors for $270 million, mostly using debt that is still on the company’s books. Coach CEO Derrick Waters said that buses will continue to run as normal during the company’s bankruptcy. The company operates several other bus brands in addition to Coach, including Megabus, Dillon’s Bus Company, and Go Van Galder. Renco Group, a private investment company, would acquire the majority of Coach’s assets in exchange for taking on $130 million of company debt and certain union contracts.

Her parents took her and her sister to nondenominational megachurches that adhered to a lot of Baptist and Pentecostal ideals, she said. As a kid, she loved the way every service felt “like a concert,” filled with music and light, and she made loads of friends through church. “So I didn’t want to associate with that kind of evangelicalism.”Draut is representative of an emerging trend: young women leaving church “in unprecedented numbers,” as Daniel Cox and Kelsey Eyre Hammond wrote in April for Cox’s newsletter, American Storylines. A new survey reveals that the pattern has now reversed.”While over the past half-century, Americans of all ages, genders and backgrounds have moved away from organized religion, as I wrote in a series on religious nones — atheists, agnostics and nothing-in-particulars — young women are now disaffiliating from organized religion in greater percentages than young men. And women pushing back on the beliefs and practices of several faiths, particularly different Christian traditions, is something I have been reading about more and more.

CNN —Anti-abortion leaders are warning Republicans not to remove a federal abortion ban from the party’s platform at next month’s GOP convention even as their presumptive nominee, Donald Trump, backs away from it. “Our expectation is that the GOP platform will continue to unequivocally call for national protections for unborn children, rooted in the 14th Amendment,” Dannenfelser told CNN in a statement. CNN has asked Trump’s campaign for comment. Trump would not be the first Republican presidential nominee to appear at odds with the party platform on abortion. He insisted, though, there’s not much daylight between the party’s platform and Trump’s latest stance.
