McDonald's shared more insights Wednesday into its investigation into a deadly E. coli outbreak. McDonald's said early indicators suggest slivered onions as a likely potential containment, but it couldn't rule out fresh beef. Two ingredients — the slivered onions and fresh beef patties — are being examined as potential sources of contamination. The Chipotle cases involved the handling and preparation of food in restaurants, McDonald's executives said. McDonald's said the slivered onions sold at affected restaurants come from a single supplier and are served raw on the sandwich.

Meanwhile, companies like Harley-Davidson, Molson Coors, Lowe's, and John Deere have scaled back or dropped their DEI programs. But amid the backlash, some organizations are refining their DEI strategies, focusing on belonging, inclusion, and fair pay alongside other diversity metrics. Companies like Ancestry, Mitre, and HLW are using data to evaluate employee experiences while addressing equity through cultural programs, training, and compensation reviews. "We're seeing more reframing of DEI efforts and a stronger emphasis on systematically linking DEI to a business case." Bussing said companies that shy away from DEI initiatives may find themselves at a disadvantage.

Qilai Shen | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of a possible worsening of the state of China's property market as it trimmed its growth expectations for the world's second-largest economy. In a report published Tuesday, the IMF trimmed its forecast for growth in China for this year to 4.8%, 0.2 percentage points lower than in its July projection. In 2025, growth is expected to come in at 4.5%, according to the IMF. The Washington, D.C.-based organization also highlighted that China's property sector contracting by more than expected is one of many downside risks for the global economic outlook. Subsidies in certain sectors, if targeted to boost exports, could exacerbate trade tensions with China's trading partners," the agency said.

New York CNN —Lawyers for CBS News are rebuffing a legal threat from Donald Trump over the network’s “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris, telling the former president his demands are based on a “faulty premise.”In a blunt letter to Trump’s legal counsel, the network on Wednesday said the First Amendment “fiercely protects” the editorial judgments made by “60 Minutes,” the network’s flagship newsmagazine. “For that reason,” CBS said, Trump has no legal basis to sue, “and I note that you do not identify one,” the letter from CBS News senior Vice President for legal affairs Gayle C. Sproul stated. When Trump backed out of a planned interview with “60 Minutes,” CBS went ahead with its plans to interview Harris and produced a Trump-less prime time special on October 7. “Editing is a necessity for all broadcasters to enable them to present the news in the time available, and that is what ’60 Minutes’ did here, as it does with its other reports,” she wrote. Trump has brought up “60 Minutes” on the campaign trail at least a dozen times in the past two weeks and has repeatedly asserted that CBS should lose its broadcast license.

New York CNN —A day after an E. coli outbreak tied to Quarter Pounders in the western part of the United States left one dead and 10 hospitalized, McDonald’s entered full damage-control mode. “We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today” Wednesday. Most of the illnesses are in Colorado and Nebraska, and most of the people who fell ill ate Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. “If there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it’s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already.”McDonald’s (MCD) stock fell more than 5% at Wednesday — its worst day since the March 2020 Covid lockdown. Chipotle’s outbreak is the worst-case scenario for any restaurant chain, and McDonald’s E. coli situation appears to be limited, at least for now, to a supply issue.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey said the company doesn't expect an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's to hurt the beverage company's sales. McDonald's is Coke's largest restaurant customer, and the two companies' symbiotic relationship has existed for nearly seven decades. On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that it has linked an E. coli outbreak in 10 states to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers. Both ingredients are unique to the Quarter Pounder burgers, although cooking the patty at the correct internal temperature should kill the bacteria. The outbreak comes as consumers broadly have been spending less at restaurants, hurting both McDonald's and Coke.

The natural gas liquids midstream space is "relatively defensive," she added. Here are a few of the stocks that Salisbury's team highlighted with buy recommendations. "Even in softening oil environment, still surprisingly cheap compared to how much cash could be paid out if capex/acquisitions ever slow even a little bit," Salisbury's team noted. Finally, Bank of America called out Kinder Morgan , saying it is among the "key beneficiaries of long-term U.S. gas demand inflection in 2025." As gas demand rises, Bank of America sees a positive catalyst for brownfield gas pipelines — as in, pipelines that are already part of an existing facility, rather than those that are newly built.

Inspired by successful e-commerce entrepreneurs, I decided to try my hand at selling on Amazon. I set a budget of $5,000, enough to launch something basic and an amount I was comfortable losing. These conversations got me thinking: Is starting a profitable Amazon business … simple? We'd been toying with the idea of starting an e-commerce business since the spring of 2023, when I mentioned one of the Amazon stories I was working on. Double the founders would mean not only double the budget but double the skillset and the network.

The company posted adjusted earnings per share of 52 cents and revenue of $25.50 billion last quarter . There's a common belief that lower borrowing costs benefit so-called growth stocks, as they're often capital-intensive. "History also suggests value should outperform growth, at least over the six months following the first rate cut," he said. If the economic situation becomes a "hard-landing," however, he said that growth stocks could outperform. If it normalizes (i.e., becomes more upward sloping), value should outperform growth," he said, referring to a situation where short-term rates are lower than long-term rates. "Lower multiple value stocks have greater upside and less risk than the pricier 'glamor growth' group for the foreseeable future," Ball said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told McDonald's late last week about a potential link to an E. coli outbreak, company spokespeople said Wednesday. As of Tuesday, the CDC has attributed 49 cases and one fatality across 10 states to the outbreak, which has been linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers. Roughly a fifth of McDonald's U.S. restaurants are not selling Quarter Pounder burgers at this time. The fast-food chain issued a statement on the outbreak Tuesday evening, shortly after the CDC issued its advisory. Over a two-week period, McDonald's typically sells roughly one million Quarter Pounders in the affected region, the company spokespeople said.

But a group of e-cigarette users are suddenly finding themselves with a little extra cash, thanks to a massive class action settlement involving one of America's tobacco giants. In online forums and on social media this week, users of Juul Labs nicotine products have been posting screenshots of online deposits for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars that they now have access to. Juul agreed to a settlement in 2022, but the Altria settlement, which was needed to kickstart payouts, was not approved until earlier this year. And it was only this month that claims for the approximately 842,000 eligible Juul customers began to be verified.
