In those moments, it became the brightest source of radio waves viewable from Earth through radio telescopes, acting like a celestial lighthouse. The object, dubbed GPM J1839−10, released radio waves every 22 minutes. “The object we’ve discovered is spinning way too slowly to produce radio waves — it’s below the death line,” Hurley-Walker said. “Assuming it’s a magnetar, it shouldn’t be possible for this object to produce radio waves. The intense, millisecond-long bursts of radio waves have unknown origins, but magnetars have been pinpointed as a potential cause.

The second time it charged Trump with inciting an insurrection, relating to the attack on the Capitol by his supporters. McCarthy voted against impeaching Trump both times. McCarthy's remarks came after Politico reported that Trump was outraged at the speaker for withholding his endorsement of Trump's third run for the White House in 2024. In return for delaying that endorsement, according to Politico, McCarthy promised to work to pass legislation to "expunge" both impeachments. Politico said McCarthy had promised to do so before Congress leaves for an August recess.

This month’s books all feature women making bad decisions — about themselves, about other people and about how to confront the threats swirling around them. Let’s begin with Detective Elise Sutton, the forensics expert thrust into a bewildering crisis in Wendy Walker’s WHAT REMAINS (Blackstone, 293 pp., $27.99). Shopping for towels at a local megastore, Elise is startled by a shooter firing into the crowd. “I am suddenly aware that, after 12 years in the department, this is the first time I have drawn my weapon in the outside world,” she thinks. And then, just as the gunman points his weapon at a bystander, she shoots him dead.

It underscored that a high-quality candidate is crucial," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview. Thirty-four of the 100 U.S. Senate seats will be up for grabs next year. WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - The Senate in the coming days is expected to consider a bipartisan measure that would compel the U.S. government to publicly release records relating to possible UFO sightings after decades of stonewalling. Their 64-page proposal is modeled after a 1992 U.S. law spelling out the handling of records related to the 1963 assassination of President John Kennedy. "Our goal is to assure credibility with regard to any investigation or record keeping of materials" associated with UAPs, Rounds said. Under the measure, records must be publicly disclosed in full no later than 25 years after the law is enacted unless the U.S. president certifies that continued postponement is necessary because of a direct harm to national security. The Pentagon has investigated numerous unexplained sightings reported by military aviators and NASA formed a special panel to look into UAPs.

The male cheetah, named Tejas, was one of 12 that were relocated from South Africa earlier this year, CNN News18 said. The relocation was part of a historic project to reintroduce cheetahs to India after they went extinct in the country 70 years ago. In March, Namibian cheetah Sasha died of kidney disease, and in April, South African cheetah Uday died due to cardiac failure. Just weeks later, South African cheetah Daksha died after a violent encounter with male cheetahs during a mating attempt. One Namibian cheetah relocated to India as part of a reintroduction program died from kidney infection.

Freight trains frequently stop and block the roads of York, Ala., sometimes cutting off two neighborhoods for hours. Emergency services and health care workers can’t get in, and those trapped inside can’t get out. “It’s not fair.”Residents have voiced these complaints for years to Norfolk Southern, which owns the tracks, and to regulators and members of Congress. Freight trains frequently block roads nationwide, a phenomenon that local officials say has grown steadily worse in the last decade as railroads run longer trains and leave them parked on tracks at crossings. The blockages can turn school drop-offs into nightmares, starve local businesses of customers and prevent emergency services from reaching those in distress.

Ray Walker had been receiving gender-affirming care in the state where he lives, and now can't. AP Photo/Rogelio V. Representative Blake D. Moore, Republican of Utah, is pushing for changes to federal law that would allow more nonstop flights between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Salt Lake City. Those flights, he said, would increase tourism between Utah and the nation’s capital. They would also offer Mr. Moore a more efficient commute. “We need more direct flights out of DCA,” he said. In recent weeks, dozens of lawmakers have joined the push for 28 new round-trip flights per day at Reagan National.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of a new election law in Florida. The law imposed new limits on voter registration and get-out-the-vote operations. Groups that retained certain voter registration information, such as for get-out-the-vote operations, could under the law also face felony prosecution. Critics also argued that the limit on non-citizen participation on registration drives violated the right to equal protection under federal law. "Herrera-Lucha, a noncitizen who, herself, lacks the right to vote, has spent years registering and encouraging citizens to exercise that solemn right," Walker wrote.

Google told the Canadian government it would block articles from Canada-based news outlets from appearing in search results and other products in the country after the passage of a new bill that would require Google to pay a fee to news companies. The bill would have brought in $329 million for Canadian newsrooms annually, Canada's Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated, a revenue stream that now seems unlikely to materialize. It requires companies such as Meta and Google to pay media outlets when they link to news in search or feeds. From 2008 to 2018, 216 Canadian newsrooms closed their doors, according to researchers. Meta already said it would begin blocking Canadian news outlets from appearing on Facebook or Instagram after the bill's passage.

Let’s be honest about the painful reality: America has functioned as a full democracy — guaranteeing the franchise to all — for less than one human lifetime. I was born in 1959, into an America rived by apartheid. When I was a child, the adults in my life were technically eligible to vote. However, in the Louisiana and Texas towns where I grew up, they were prevented from doing so by the social and cultural norms of the American South. During the first two decades of my life, the American people finally acknowledged this truth and, to borrow a phrase, acted affirmatively to address it.
