FORESTHILL, Calif. (AP) — A 19-year-old was rescued after a stunt went wrong and left him dangling by a rope from California's tallest bridge, authorities said. Deputies responding Monday evening to the Foresthill Bridge northeast of Sacramento determined the teen and his 17-year-old friend had been shooting video of him swinging from the steel span, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. “The 19 year-old became stuck, hanging approximately 30 feet from the underside of the catwalk when his equipment failed. His friend called 911 after they determined he was stuck and needed assistance,” the sheriff's office said in a statement. Rising 730 feet (223 meters) above the North Fork American River in Sierra Nevada foothills, it’s the tallest bridge in the state and third tallest in the United States.

‘Cassandro’ Review: Love and Lucha Libre
  + stars: | 2023-09-21 | by ( Natalia Winkelman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In conversations with Sabrina, Saúl toggles between English and Spanish, reserving the latter for colloquialisms or teasing, and the mixture gives their dialogue an organic rhythm. He uses the same blend of languages with his lover, Gerardo (Raúl Castillo), a married luchador with kids whom Saúl sees in secret. and AIDS panic was at its shrillest, and although the real-life Cassandro was sometimes rebuffed by homophobic opponents, the movie never mentions the epidemic. “Don’t you think he’s sexy?” Saúl says, referring to Cassandro as if he were a third person who might join them. The trouble is that lucha libre, built on glitz, is anything but naturalistic.

Niki Shiva, 17, from Hayward, Calif., said she sets her phone to “do not disturb for everyone except mom” to mitigate her anxiety. Several of the teens we spoke to said that, when possible, they remove accounts from their social media feeds that chip away at their self-esteem. Four of five teenagers in the United States said that what they see on social media makes them feel more connected to what’s going on in their friends’ lives, according to Pew Research Center. “Every time I open my phone, I don’t see perfect celebrities,” she said. “Sometimes I like to put alarms on to tell me when to stop being on my phone,” she said.

“This is really the first truly digital generation, and we have yet to see how much effect this has,” said Dr. Frances Jensen, a neurologist at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of “The Teenage Brain.”“We can get snapshots,” she added. What we know is that the brain matures from back to front, a process that starts in infancy and continues into adulthood, Dr. Jensen explained. And during adolescence, there is a particular flurry of activity in the middle part of the brain, which is associated with rewards and social feedback. “Areas that have to do with peers, peer pressure, impulsivity and emotion are very, very, very active,” Dr. Jensen said. Defendant Andrew Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for shooting Ralph Yarl, 16, on the doorstep of his suburban home on April 13. Lester fired two shots through a glass door with a .32-caliber revolver, according to prosecutors. Yarl was struck in the head and an arm, apparently before crossing the threshold or exchanging any words with Lester, according to Clay County prosecutor Zachary Thompson. Lester was freed on his own recognizance soon after being detained following the shooting. His swift release fueled days of protest before he was charged days later and he turned himself back in to police.

Carter Osborne's side hustle, advising high schoolers on their college application essays, has more than doubled his income over the last two years, he says. He never dreamed his side hustle, advising high school seniors on their college application essays, would give him a six-figure income. Coming from a family of educators, he'd actually enjoyed his own college application process. Applying to 10 schools — an ambitious but not uncommon number — means writing upwards of 25 essays, Osborne says. At first, the teen was hesitant to include the hobby in his college application, Osborne says.

Lonza’s CEO churn adds to company’s ailments

REUTERS/Denis Balibouse Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Lonza’s (LONN.S) new broom will face even more challenges than its old one. Since he was appointed CEO in 2020, the Swiss group has increased capital expenditure as a percentage of revenue from 20% to 30% last year. Even before Monday’s fall, the stock was trading at 32 times its forward earnings, around the same level as before its pandemic surge. The disruption of another CEO exit, without a clear explanation, means that the hoped-for growth will take even longer to arrive. European regulators hit social media platform TikTok with a $368 million fine for lapses in children's privacy. It's the first time the video-sharing app has been penalized under Europe's data privacy rules. An investigation found significant lapses in the protection of children's privacy, it said. This isn't the first time that TikTok has been fined over data protection concerns. Data privacy regulators in the UK issued a £12.7 million ($15.7 million) fine to TikTok in April for mishandling children's data and breaching protections for young users' personal information, AP reported.

LONDON (AP) — European regulators slapped TikTok with a $368 million fine on Friday for failing to protect children's privacy, the first time that the popular short video-sharing app has been punished for breaching Europe's strict data privacy rules. And it nudged teen users into more “privacy intrusive” options when signing up and posting videos, the watchdog said. The Irish regulator has been criticized for not moving fast enough in its investigations into Big Tech companies since EU privacy laws took effect in 2018. For TikTok, German and Italian regulators disagreed with parts of a draft decision issued a year ago, delaying it further. Instagram, WhatsApp and their owner Meta are among other tech giants that have been hit with big fines by the Irish regulator over the past year.

CNN —A smaller share of Gen Z is thriving compared to millennials at the same age, and members of Gen Z are far less likely to describe their mental health as “excellent,” according to a new study. The study, released Thursday, aims to reflect the voices of Gen Z on key issues the generation faces. According to the study, both millennials and members of Gen X “report far lower mental health ratings” today than they did a decade ago. “This generation may be more tuned in to recognizing issues with their mental health than older generations,” psychologist Walter Evans said.
