REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 25 (Reuters) - IT software and consultancy services provider IBM (IBM.N) reported third-quarter revenue slightly above Wall Street targets on Wednesday, buoyed by stable demand for its software solutions and a stronger-than-expected mainframe business. Shares of the Armonk, New York-based company rose 2% in trading after the bell. While the company has seen a slowdown in the growth of its overall business compared to last year, it reiterated its annual target for revenue growth and free-cash-flow generation. Revenue at its software segment, which now includes newly acquired IT budgeting software maker Apptio, rose nearly 8%, excluding the impact from a strong dollar. IBM's revenue in the third quarter rose about 5% to $14.8 billion, compared to an estimate of $14.73 billion, according to LSEG data.

[1/3] A woman passes by The Federal Reserve Bank of New York in New York City, U.S., March 13, 2023. The New York Fed foray into the topic comes as the central bank has retreated from the climate issue after facing heat from some members of Congress. Meanwhile, the central bank formally joined in late 2020 with other major central banks in efforts to shore up the financial system against climate-related disruptions. Some in Congress have seen the Fed’s climate work as a sign of a politicized central bank. That said, the Fed has not ruled out thinking about how climate disruptions affect the full measure of the economy.

The Father-Son Struggle That Helped Ensure IBM’s Success

His father, Watson Sr., the head of IBM, was a domineering man who subjected his son to a classic combination of emotional distance and cruelty. Watson Jr. responded by becoming a rebel and wastrel. Watson Sr., “the old man,” was a type familiar to our times: the tech titan who runs a large company as an extension of himself. The company “was run entirely out of one man’s breast pocket,” McElvenny and Wortman write. Watson Sr. “made all strategic decisions and most minor ones” and “delegated almost no authority.”

Melt the world away, lose its details, dissolve its borders; it doesn’t sound like such an unwelcome prospect right now. The most substantial Mark Rothko retrospective in a generation has opened at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and it is a show of monumental dispersion: a pull-out-all-the-stops blockbuster where life passes into vapor. From 1949, when his early figurative pictures finally liquefied into stains of translucent color, Rothko painted with no allusions, no particulars. A lot of people find his large paintings consoling, or seek the Romantic sublime in the depths of his reds and violets. “Behind the color lies the cataclysm,” he said in 1959 — a citation that rarely makes the auction preview catalogs.

CNN —Nikola Jokić led the Denver Nuggets to a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on opening night of the 2023-24 season as the NBA champions began their campaign to secure a second successive ring. Two-time NBA MVP Jokić finished with a triple-double – 29 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists – as the Nuggets won 119-107 at Ball Arena in Colorado. But it was the defending NBA champion which got its season off to the perfect start, with clear aspirations of repeat success. The bill to deratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) was approved by 156 votes to zero in the upper house after the lower house also passed it unanimously. Putin had requested the change to "mirror" the position of the United States, which signed the CTBT in 1996 but never ratified it. Though it has never formally come into force, the CTBT has made nuclear testing a taboo - no country except North Korea has conducted a test involving a nuclear explosion this century. CNN published satellite images last month showing that Russia, the United States and China have all expanded their nuclear test sites in recent years. Russia suspended the treaty this year and it is due to expire in 2026, leaving the two countries without any remaining bilateral nuclear weapons agreement.

The Patriotic Education Law provides a legal guarantee for carrying out patriotic education, state-backed Xinhua news agency reported, adding that some people "are at a loss about what is patriotism." The law mandates that patriotic education respects the "history and cultural traditions of other countries and draws inspiration from all of human civilization's outstanding achievements," it said. The law also has targeted measures for different groups of people, including government officials, employees, villagers and residents in special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan, state-backed China Daily said.

The National Weather Service warned of hazardous travel on snowy mountain passes and ice on some highways when snow initially melts and then freezes as road temperatures drop. The snow was then forecast to spread across northern Idaho, Montana, northwestern Wyoming and North Dakota into Friday. Some higher elevations in the northern Rockies could see snow totals of 2 feet (61 centimeters) or more. Central Montana will see the worst of the snow, said Matt Ludwig, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Great Falls. Northwestern Wyoming, including Yellowstone National Park, was also under a winter storm warning, the National Weather Service said.

GOOGL YTD mountain Alphabet YTD Bottom line Lower-than-expected operating income for the third quarter and a Google Cloud miss dragged Alphabet shares lower by more than 6% in after-hours trading. The Google Cloud performance was particularly disappointing given the strength we saw when Microsoft (MSFT) also reported its Azure numbers on Tuesday evening. Quarterly commentary Despite the topline outperformance, seen in the earnings table above, segment sales at Google Network, Google Cloud and Other Bets came up short. Operating income and quarterly operating margin were also short of expectations as total Traffic Acquisition Costs (TAC) were marginally above expectations. Expenses in Google Cloud and Other Bets were higher than expected, and the company took charges associated with workforce and office space reductions.
