Attorney Alina Habba told a judge in a letter that writer E. Jean Carroll’s trial was ruined when Habba elicited from Carroll through her questions that Carroll had deleted an unknown number of social media messages containing death threats. That jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. Robbie Kaplan, an attorney for Carroll who is not related to the judge, declined comment. Habba asked the judge to instruct the jury that Carroll had an obligation to minimize the effect of the defamation she endured. The trial resumes Monday, when Trump will have an opportunity to testify after Carroll's lawyers finish presenting their case.

Trump has also baselessly questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris, whose parents are immigrants, was eligible. Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who Trump also bested in that 2016 primary with taunts of “Little Marco,” also again endorsed Trump this week. It is actually Trump who faces more legitimate questions about his eligibility under the 14th Amendment. It is not true, as he alleges, that Democrats can take part in the GOP primary. “You have a group of people coming in that are not Republicans, and it’s artificially boosting her numbers here,” Trump said.

While a victim of sexual assault receives death threats, her assailant receives endorsements and secures the Iowa caucus. Like so many sexual assault victims and survivors, Carroll’s ongoing pursuit of justice, the court proceedings and the response of her alleged abuser have been re-traumatizing. The US Department of Veterans reports that one in three victims of sexual assault will experience post-traumatic stress disorder sometime during their lives. $12.1 million in compensatory damages for Carroll to fix her reputation, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. The jury in that case awarded Carroll $5 million in combined compensatory and punitive damages. Her attorneys have asked for punitive damages to "make him stop" defaming her. Punitive damages could also send a message to other wealthy people that they cannot get away with lying about sexual abuse victims. Carroll, finishing her testimony in the trial Thursday, said her reputation has been marred by Trump's attacks.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress sent President Joe Biden a short-term spending bill on Thursday that would avert a looming partial government shutdown and fund federal agencies into March. House Republicans have fought bitterly over budget levels and policy since taking the majority at the start of 2023. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted by his caucus in October after striking an agreement with Democrats to extend current spending the first time. “We’re not going to get everything we want.”Most House Republicans have so far refrained from saying that Johnson’s job is in danger. In Thursday afternoon's vote, 107 House Republicans voted to keep federal agencies funded and 106 voted against the measure.

The former president publicly fulminated against Judge Lewis Kaplan as “nasty” and a “Trump-hating guy” and bucked courtroom etiquette. Trump accused Kaplan of being heartless for not suspending the trial so that he can attend the funeral of his mother-in-law. But Haley has only implicitly criticized Trump’s assault on democracy, false claims of electoral fraud and tumultuous term in office. This attitude is consistent with Trump’s apparent belief that rules that apply to other Americans don’t constrain him. “That aside, it’s just remarkable how much the former president has gotten away with in court.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump's lawyer Alina Habba cross examines E. Jean Carroll before Judge Lewis Kaplan during the second civil trial where Carroll accused Trump of raping her decades ago, at Manhattan Federal Court in New York City, U.S., January 18, 2024 in this courtroom sketch. A federal judge Thursday quickly lost patience with Donald Trump's lawyer as she grilled E. Jean Carroll on her income and social media history as part of the former president's civil defamation trial. said the judge, Lewis Kaplan, in response to defense lawyer Alina Habba's questions about how much money Carroll currently makes. The trial in Manhattan federal court is being conducted to determine damages Carroll is owed by Trump for defamatory statements he made after she aired that rape claim. Kaplan's impatience with Habba's cross-examination came a day after Trump clashed with the judge in open court.

The accusations by the writer E. Jean Carroll that former President Donald J. Trump raped and defamed her have been the subject of two separate trials in U.S. District Court in Lower Manhattan and have unfolded as Mr. Trump campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination. Last May, a jury found that Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine who said he assaulted her nearly three decades ago in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. Now, Mr. Trump, 77, is back in the same federal courthouse, defending himself again against accusations of defamation. On Thursday, Ms. Carroll, the first witness in the case, ended her testimony in a trial that is expected to wrap up next week. It is still unknown whether Mr. Trump will take the stand.

Read previewIf you're hoping to age gracefully, getting enough protein may be a good place to start, new research suggests. The study followed women who were in good health and between their 30s to 50s at the start of the study. AdvertisementThey found that women who ate more protein had notably lower rates of chronic diseases linked to aging, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and cognitive decline. Future studies could also help explore who could benefit since the demographics in this study were limited to women of a specific age group and profession. The results also suggest it's a good idea to start eating enough protein in your younger years before health issues arise.

Carroll is due to testify Wednesday in the second federal civil trial over her claims against Trump, who denies them all. Trump asserts that nothing ever happened between him and Carroll, indeed that he has never even met her. "I think it's insanely prejudicial," Habba told US District Judge Lewis Kaplan Wednesday morning. AdvertisementUnder longstanding Supreme Court precedent, Kaplan said, Trump has a legal right to be represented at his trial either personally, or by lawyers standing in for him. The trial, which began Tuesday, is focused on two statements Trump made defaming Carroll in 2019. Carroll previously took Trump to trial last year, where a jury found him liable for sexually abusing her and defaming her in a different set of statements. Three days later, Habba asked for a one-week delay of the trial.

Following Kaplan's warning, Trump posted that Kaplan was a "seething and hostile" judge with "a major case of Trump Derangement Syndrome." Trump said he did not know Carroll and that she branded him a rapist to boost sales of her then-new memoir. "I am here because Donald Trump assaulted me, and when I wrote about it, he said it never happened," Carroll said. Trump did not attend Carroll's first trial, and in his Truth Social post said he would have won had he attended.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will convene top congressional leaders Wednesday at the White House pressing for his $110 billion national security package at a pivotal time as senators narrow on a landmark immigration deal that could unlock the stalled aid to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies. “I will tell the President that I’ve been seeing it consistently since the moment I was handed the gavel,” said Johnson, R-La. But the speaker leads an ambivalent House GOP majority that wants to extract its own priorities on the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for any overseas support. The speaker has insisted any border security deal must align with the House-passed strict border security bill. “It’s an opportunity to get some really conservative border policy that we haven’t been able to get for 40 years,” he said.

This would be on top of the revenue lost by diverted container vessels which are required to pay between $500,000-$600,000 per transit. "However, given the longer transit times vessels are experiencing, the market may face a shortage of empties across Asia until sailings normalize." Evelyn Fornes, Home Depot spokeswoman, said it is working with logistics carriers to find alternate routes to limit any impact from the Red Sea conflict.
