File photo of Fine Gael leader Simon Harris speaking at a convention in Athlone, central Ireland on March 24, 2024, after becoming de facto prime minister-in-waiting. The exit poll put the left wing Sinn Fein on 21.1%, the center-right Fine Gael of Prime Minister Simon Harris on 21.0% and like-minded coalition partner Fianna Fail on 19.5%. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail pledged ahead of the election to seek to form a coalition without Sinn Fein, just as they did after the 2020 general election when Sinn Fein also narrowly won the popular vote. They benefited from a slide in support for Sinn Fein, from 30-35% in polls in 2022 and 2023, in part due to anger among its working class base at relatively liberal immigration policies. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will likely need the support of at least one other smaller party to reach a majority.

"The data is very clear that public sector workers have better outcomes than private sector workers for that reason," she says. "There's a lot of indicators pointing to guaranteed income playing a big part in retirement confidence." The problem for many American workers: Forms of guaranteed income are getting rarer. If you have a well-diversified portfolio of high-quality dividend stocks, Dogen contends, you can essentially ignore the ups and downs of the stocks in your portfolio and focus on raking in the steady cash. CNN —The Chicago Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus following the team’s disastrous Thanksgiving day loss to the Detroit Lions to extend its losing streak to six games. With 32 seconds left in the game and one timeout remaining, the Bears needed a field goal to force overtime. Instead, Eberflus watched the seconds tick off the clock without calling a timeout, and the Bears only managed to get one play off before the clock ran out. After the calamitous ending to the game, Eberflus said he was “taking the blame” but defended his handling of the situation. Earlier this month, Brown was elevated to offensive coordinator following the firing of Shane Waldron.

The issue is compounded by the fact that legitimate strategies to make money with bitcoin are being discussed publicly by reputable sources. Deep in the canyons of New York’s financial district, there is an office tower that matches the cultural moment, for better and for worse. Known as the WSA building (short for Water Street Associates), the 31-story structure, at 175 Water Street, has become a nexus for the kind of people who might not otherwise set foot in this neighborhood of bankers and brokers. Built in 1983, the tower was the longtime global headquarters of the insurance giant A.I.G. sold the building for about $270 million in 2019, it sat all but empty during much of the pandemic, when scores of companies, including A.I.G., left the financial district. In late 2022, an LLC under the name 99c bought the building for $252 million and announced a bold plan to “reinvent” the property.

Almost five years after Covid blew into our lives, the main thing standing between us and the next global pandemic is luck. And with the advent of flu season, that luck may well be running out. Farmworkers have so far avoided tragedy, as the virus has not yet acquired the genetic tools to spread among humans. As bad as the Biden administration has been on pandemic prevention, of course, it’s about to be replaced by something far worse. Kennedy may even be hastening its arrival through his advocacy for raw milk, which can carry high levels of the H5N1 virus and is considered a possible vector for its transmission.

Albuquerque, New Mexico AP —Jurors in New Mexico have awarded a man more than $412 million in a medical malpractice case that involved a men’s health clinic that operates in several states. The man’s attorneys celebrated Monday’s verdict, saying they are hopeful it will prevent other men from falling victim to a scheme that involved fraud and what they described as dangerous penile injections. That is a very egregious breach of their fiduciary duty,” said Lori Bencoe, one of the lawyers who represented the plaintiff. The clinic is accused of misdiagnosing him and unnecessarily treating him with “invasive erectile dysfunction shots” that caused irreversible damage. According to court records, jurors found that fraudulent and negligent conduct by the defendants resulted in damages to the plaintiff.
