The government should reduce the interest rate on federal student loans, and forgive any that's accrued. Half of Americans support forgiving up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, a figure that soars to 83% among those who have student loans. Forgiving all student loan debt still maintains 39% support, a remarkably high figure for a fiscal policy that even a decade ago would have been an utter non-starter politically. Americans owe just south of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. As a result, an equitable solution is this: retroactively adjust the interest rate on federal student loans to be at or near zero.

[1/5] A view of Palestinian goods trucks in front of the commercial crossing of Kerem Shalom after the Israeli ban on Gaza exports deals a blow to the long-suffering economy, in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip September 5, 2023. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the Israeli decision "would increase the already existing tension because of continued Israeli blockade and aggression against our people". In Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Palestinian economy minister Khaled Assaili demanded Israel cancel the ban which stops Gaza exports to Israel and the West Bank. Gaza exports are estimated at $134 million per year, mostly to Israel and the West Bank, according to the enclave's ministry of economy. As well as fish and agricultural produce, Gaza exports significant quantities of textiles and other products.

Gen Z is giving up on college
  + stars: | 2023-09-05 | by ( Charlotte Lytton | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +11 min
"The world is rapidly evolving — and so is the college experience." Srivastava is one of a soaring number of Gen Zers who has decided to skip college altogether. The widening gap between the value and the cost of college has started to shift Gen Z's attitude toward higher education. They're not as interested in the typical "college experience" — whiling away four years rooming with friends and drinking at frat parties. But other members of Gen Z are taking a hard look at the "essence" of college.

Biden, who spent eight years as Obama's vice president, told a friend that Obama couldn't even curse properly, according to “The Last Politician: Inside Joe Biden’s White House and the Struggle for America’s Future." In private, Biden would “occasionally admit to friends he felt tired," the book says. She said the book was actually praising Biden for helping to push major legislation through Congress and unify global support around Ukraine. "And we’re not going to litigate here.”Foer's book also describes struggles by Vice President Kamala Harris to carve out a role for herself as Biden's No. Foer's book says Biden tried to treat Harris more respectfully than he felt Obama often had treated him as vice president, calling her “the vice president" instead of “my vice president."

Over a holiday weekend dedicated to labor, this year’s Telluride Film Festival attendees couldn’t help being reminded of striking workers: the members of SAG-AFTRA, the television and film actors’ union currently in a standoff with the Hollywood studios. Opinion | Michael Oher and ‘White Savior Syndrome’

To the Editor:Re “I Understand Why Michael Oher Is Angry,” by Elizabeth Spiers (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 28):I commend this essay about the lawsuit filed by the former football player Michael Oher to end his legal relationship with the Tuohy family. As a white adoptive mother of two Black sons, I found Ms. Spiers’s piece to be the first analysis that got to the heart of what is so important about this situation. She is absolutely correct that “white savior syndrome” is nothing more than white supremacy in softened guise. In addition to the loss of their biological parents, being adopted by white parents deprived my sons of privacy. While young, every time they were seen in the company of their parents, everyone knew that they were adopted, and that their biological parents had been unable to care for them.

"Improved diet quality and increased organized sports and reading were associated with improved cognition," the neuroscientists wrote. One particular part of the study's findings stands out: the suggestion that structured physical activity, like organized sports, can improve kids' cognitive skills. The finding builds on past research, which showed a clear link between increased physical activity and improved brain function, including memory and learning ability. Team sports especially offer a mental health boost by blending physical activity with social development. Still, experts often recommend a healthy mix of structured and unstructured play for children: The former can provide more targeted learning, while the latter can help foster creativity and self-motivation.

“DNA has been really extremely helpful for us, with the Rapid DNA,” said Alison Galloway, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California-Santa Cruz, who helped identify remains during the Camp Fire. “If you don’t have that … then it’s a lot more difficult.”In general, forensic experts rely on DNA, dental analysis, fingerprints, medical hardware or circumstantial evidence to try to identify remains. “We’re still diligently working trying to make sure that we can identify (remains), and that’s why that DNA is so important, because we got fingerprints from three,” he said. Large US tech companies face new EU regulations
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
Although the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) passed last year, companies have had until now to prepare for its enforcement. Friday marks the arrival of a key compliance deadline — after which tech platforms with more than 45 million EU users will have to meet the obligations laid out in the law. But the list finalized in April includes the most powerful tech companies in the world, and, for those firms, violations can be expensive. The DSA permits EU officials to issue fines worth up to 6% of a very large platform’s global annual revenue. In a statement, a Microsoft spokesperson told CNN the DSA deadline “is an important milestone in the fight against illegal content online.
