Mr. Ford kept their daughter at home to ensure Ms. Ford wouldn’t tell anyone in the emergency room how Robert’s injury happened. Ms. Ford, now 65, is serving a sentence of life without parole at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. Leigh Goodmark, the author of the book “Imperfect Victims,” said that self-defense law imagines two parties of equal strength, size, weight and physical capability. But where self-defense law really fails to capture a woman’s experience is around the question of imminence. For women like Ms. Ford, Ms. Ayobi and many others, killing their way out of a relationship was an act of salvation — for themselves, for their children.

Executives at ESPN and Penn Entertainment hope that's true of ESPN Bet, which will soon debut in the Big Apple as football season heats up. The company hopes its massive platform and popular talent will attract new users to ESPN Bet. A far lower spend rate than its peers drove the service's market share below 4% in the first quarter of 2024, BofA estimated. In those states, ESPN Bet's share is generally between 3% and 6%. Reinhard parted ways with previous ad sales leader Peter Naylor in July, in Netflix's second ads leadership shake-up in two years. To get a sense of how Reinhard is approaching the hire, Business Insider spoke with 11 people who had inside knowledge about the search or who are close to Netflix's ad business. Others with those credentials who some insiders think could be in the mix include Pooja Midha, EVP and GM for Effectv, the ad sales arm of Comcast's cable division. "They view ad sales as having a lack of rigor and discipline," the first person who'd had conversations with Netflix said. Netflix also shook up its ad sales leadership twice, with its first ads leader Jeremi Gorman being replaced after a year, and then with Naylor's recent exit.

Two days before his sentencing, Trump, they predict, will seek something never before allowed in the appellate courts in New York or in most states for that matter: an interlocutory appeal. AdvertisementEven Trump's Manhattan prosecutors are conceding that this is a legal monkey wrench to be reckoned with. "If New York's courts deny him a right to appeal, he can challenge the decision in federal court," said Paradis. If the federal district court in Manhattan says no, "he can appeal that to the second circuit federal court of appeals." This story has been updated to reflect Trump's federal court efforts, from August 29 to September 4, to further delay sentencing.

New York CNN —A number of viral TikTok videos had some people believing they could get “free” cash from Chase ATMs. The problem is that this is just a form of check fraud, a criminal offense. In the case of the viral videos, participants wrote checks for obscene amounts of money and then withdrew as much as they could before the check could bounce. “Regardless of what you see online, depositing a fraudulent check and withdrawing the funds from your account is fraud, plain and simple,” a Chase spokesperson said. I would never say I regret my college experience, but I will say that it's impacted how I think about my son's. There are benefits to taking a year before going to collegeWhen done the right way, a gap year can provide possibilities. That's a major part of why I like this idea for my son if he chooses to do it. And, like a lot of young people, he might move in a direction that none of us can see coming just yet. However, the potential for a gap year to instill more responsibility and confidence in my son seems to outweigh this particular con in my mind.

London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

Under the proposal, new small businesses could spread the deduction out over several years, or delay claiming the $50,000 tax deduction until the company turned a profit. The Internal Revenue Service has previously run into issues ensuring that its small business tax breaks end up in the right pockets, especially during the pandemic, when the agency flagged a spike in fraudulent claims. The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for clarification about which startups and small businesses would be eligible for the tax deduction. On Wednesday, Harris will also set a goal of collecting 25 million new small business applications in her first term if she is elected president. By focusing on small businesses, Harris' tax deduction proposal could help her thread the needle between rebutting Trump's attacks, and keeping up her political crusade against corporate greed.

Dow falls by more than 600 points as September turns ugly

New York CNN —Wall Street kicked off the month of September with a bust, after a disappointing economic report dragged down the Dow by 626 points, or 1.5%, Tuesday afternoon. Traders were already jittery ahead of a big month of economic news, from Friday’s key jobs report to next week’s inflation readings and then the long-awaited rate cut from the Fed mid-month. Investors were reacting to a weaker-than-expected jobs report that underscored fears that the Fed had mishandled inflation and pushed the economy right into a recession. Friday’s jobs report is arguably the most important piece of economic data that central bank officials will have to parse before their monetary policy meeting on September 17-18. International benchmark Brent fell to $73.70 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed at just above $70 a barrel.

Travel spending among American households continues to outpace its pre-pandemic levels, a trend underpinned by a zeal for international trips, according to new Bank of America research. "A key part of travel momentum lies within vacationing abroad," Taylor Bowley and Joe Wadford, economists at the Bank of America Institute, wrote in a note Wednesday. Overall, travel spending is down slightly from 2023, yet it remains "much higher" than 2019 — up by 10.6% per household, they wrote, citing Bank of America credit and debit card data from January to mid-August. About 17% of Americans said in June that they intended to vacation abroad during the next six months, up from roughly 14% in 2018 and 2019, according to a recent Conference Board survey. "I do expect the demand to continue," said Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel site Hopper.
