Francina Armengol was appointed speaker after winning 178 votes in the 350-seat parliament. The candidate of the conservative People's Party (PP) won just 137 votes, while far-right Vox, which is in coalition with the PP in several Spanish regions, voted for its own candidate, Ignacio Gil instead of the PP's. Her candidacy for the speakership was seen as a nod to Catalan, Basque and Galician parties. CNN —President Joe Biden is using the presidential retreat at Camp David to help with a diplomatic mission – hosting the first-ever trilateral summit with Japan and South Korea, two countries that are putting aside a fraught history in the face of shared security challenges. The gathering will mark the first time Biden is hosting foreign leaders at the Camp David retreat, a site of historic diplomatic negotiations for past presidents. From the start of his administration, Biden has sought to draw Asian allies like Japan and South Korea closer, in part, to counter an ascendant China. Youssef En-Nesyri had given Europa League winners Sevilla the lead with a towering header in the 25th minute but City equalised through a header from 21-year-old Cole Palmer in the 63rd minute. Sevilla made last season's Champions League winners uncomfortable with aggressive high pressing and En-Nesyri wasted several opportunities before he scored following a counter-attack. Before I moved to Spain, I knew of two types of vermouth: white and red. Vermouth is to Spain what a pint is to Ireland or mate is to Argentina — a national pastime. Historically, people drink vermouth on Sunday mornings after church. In fact, it’s so stitched into the culture that “fer un vermut” (“to do a vermouth”) is an expression that doesn’t even require you to order vermouth. It means, let’s meet for a drink in the middle of the day (another culinary surprise).

Spain's acting PM Sanchez says he will seek investiture vote

"I will ask for parliament's confidence to form a progressive government," Sanchez said in a address to the legislators of his Socialist Party. He said his party, which won the second-highest number of votes in the general election held last month, will first seek to clinch the lower house speaker position on Thursday. Sanchez, who first took power in 2018, has ruled since early 2020 thanks to a minority coalition with a far-left party. The conservative People's Party won more seats than the Socialists, but did not secure an outright majority and faces an uphill battle as it so far lacks enough support to form a government, as does Sanchez. Colombia 'dreaming big' ahead of England quarter-final
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Ian Ransom | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
World number 25 Colombia are by far the lowest ranked among the quarter-finalists but captain Catalina Usme insists they can go all the way. Former finalists Brazil are usually the top South American team at the tournament but Colombia have stolen their thunder. Colombia failed to qualify for the 2019 Women's World Cup in France but have been building for the current showpiece for years by investing in youth. Saturday's quarter-final at Stadium Australia should produce another electric atmosphere, pitting the Colombian supporters against Sydney's big community of English immigrants and expats. Abadia said Colombian fans' excitement was justified.
