Listening to boygenius, Together and Apart
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Lindsay Zoladz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Dear listeners,It’s been a big week for boygenius, the singer-songwriter supergroup of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. “This is our last show,” Dacus told the crowd, “and we’re feeling it.”Is it weird to say I wasn’t mad about this news? “The Record” itself had been an unexpected bonus, since boygenius initially seemed like a one-off project that wouldn’t last longer than a six-song EP and a subsequent tour. But the runaway success of “The Record” also means that some people are more familiar with boygenius than with the three accomplished solo artists who make up the group. It’s a celebration of both the individual work of Baker, Bridgers and Dacus (which sounds like a law firm that I would definitely hire) and also the magic that happens when they put their Captain Planet powers together and become boygenius.

CNN —It’s evident now why Vladimir Putin granted an interview to Tucker Carlson. At times, between the airing of grievances, Putin appeared to school Carlson on historical events as the host looked on in bewilderment. It was a massive propaganda victory for Putin, who can — and will – now twist the encounter for his own ends. “VLADIMIR PUTIN’S INTERVIEW GAINS OVER 20 MILLION VIEWERS IN FIRST TWO HOURS,” RT boasted in one on-screen graphic. At the end of the interview, Carlson asked Putin if he would be “willing to release” Evan Gershkovich, the imprisoned reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

Opinion: ‘Boysober’ comes with some baggage
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Opinion Holly Thomas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Are you sure you’re doing the right thing? Whereas “self-partnered’ connotes a vague but cheerful sense of romantic self-care, “boysober” very obviously comes with baggage. To get painfully literal about it: The existence of “boysober” implies the existence of “boydrunk.” Going boysober, one can therefore assume, isn’t just about celibacy or a break from dating. Woodard gets into this in a YouTube video she’s posted ahead of a podcast series on her boysober project. Even if you’re not wholly sure what you’re doing, claiming some agency over that process is reassuring.

Emotional intelligence, which is the capacity to understand and control our emotions, as well as being sensitive to others' feelings, nurtures our relationships and boosts our empathy. With higher emotional intelligence, you're also better equipped to grasp and empathize with the emotions of others, fostering deeper, more fulfilling relationships. Here's how my emotional intelligence has grown since I've gotten older:1. I feel more compassion for othersAs I age, I've softened ... and not just around my belly. I'm able to positively reappraise negative experiences, like getting stuck in traffic in an Uber (interpretation: great chance to meditate).

The US Air Force is opening back up its Voluntary Retired Return to Active Duty Program. The Air Force has faced challenges with recruitment and retention, which can affect readiness. AdvertisementThe US Air Force said Wednesday it is bringing back the Voluntary Retired Return to Active Duty Program in hopes of reactivating retired service members to address "critical manning shortages" amid concerns about recruitment and retention. The trend in recruiting for the Air Force and some of the other services hasn't been great. In 2022, the Air Force almost fell short of its recruiting goal, and in 2023, the branch missed its active-duty recruiting goal by more than 2,000 soldiers.

The case now comes to the Supreme Court following Trump’s appeal, and it could determine whether Trump appears on the ballot in up to 35 different states where his eligibility is being challenged. Fortunately, the Supreme Court need not look far for answers to these questions. The Supreme Court may be wary of disqualifying Trump based solely on their own ruling as a group of unelected judges. The Constitution is clear, Congress’ votes are clear and Trump’s disqualification is thus wholly justified. That is the genius of the 14th Amendment — which the Supreme Court should fully embrace.

The Latino experience will be a focus of Carnegie Hall’s coming season, the presenter’s leadership announced on Wednesday, with a festival inside and beyond the hall’s walls called “Nuestros Sonidos” (“Our Sounds”) and a slate of concerts featuring artists with ties to Latin America. Clive Gillinson, Carnegie’s executive and artistic director, said in an interview that the festival was meant to respond to the underrepresentation of Latino people and Hispanic culture in American classical music. He will have a growing presence in New York next season: Aside from his Carnegie appearances, he will lead several weeks of programming with the New York Philharmonic, where he takes over as music and artistic director in 2026. The Mexican-born composer Gabriela Ortiz will be in residence at Carnegie all season. Five of her works, including a concerto she wrote for the cellist Alisa Weilerstein, will have their New York premieres.

It’s hard to pin down the moment in “Oh, Mary!,” a comedy about Mary Todd Lincoln, that will send Lincoln scholars and purists into apoplexy. It could be when the first lady disastrously auditions for a role in “Our American Cousin,” the play at which John Wilkes Booth would later shoot her husband on April 14, 1865. Or when the deeply closeted Lincoln is orally pleasured at his desk. “I’ve seen people at the box office who seem to think this is really a play about Abraham Lincoln, and I feel a little bad, but it’s also funny,” Cole Escola, the show’s writer and star, said in a recent phone interview. (The show opens on Thursday and continues through March 24 at Off Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Theater.)

An ETF that's down 80% from its all-time high or one that is up 110% from its all-time low? Both of these outlandish percent moves describe the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) , which is down 80% from its February '21 high and now up 110% from its October '23 low. The only discernable point here is the spike in early February'21, which lined up exactly with the ETF's all-time high. The ETF had flirted with piercing this line before – most recently this past fall - but each attempt failed before 2024. Stability training can help you build strength, prevent injury and even boost longevity. That's why slam ball exercises can translate well to strength in everyday activities like sports, jumping, and sprinting, according to Stonehouse. Medicine balls work your core and stabilityA medicine ball is often more compact than a slam ball, Stonehouse explained, and is bouncier while slam balls are softer to avoid a potentially risky rebound.
