But the question is this: Will those investors return any time soon, especially with sentiment still so sour and stocks at risk of a major selloff? Total net assets in money market funds rose to $4.814 trillion in the week ended Jan. 4, according to the Investment Company Institute. At the same time, money market funds are actually generating a few percentage points of income for the first time in years. Consider that sweep accounts, where investors hold unused cash balances in their brokerage accounts, can park those amounts in money market mutual funds or money market deposit accounts. To me this was people basically selling the market at the end of the year, and they just parked it in the money market funds.
In terms of market moves, “the sheer volatility around each CPI release is remarkable” and reflects the magnitude of inflation surprises last year and how those unexpected readings changed the outlook for Fed policy, they wrote. Last year was the year the Fed got caught flatfooted by the highest levels of inflation seen in 40 years. Rates will almost certainly go up further this year even as inflation pressures are showing some initial signs of cooling. Among policymakers, the report found that remarks by Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Vice-Chair Lael Brainard and New York Fed leader John Williams had notable market impacts. The report did not rank the market impact of the 11 remaining regional Fed leaders, who speak with much greater frequency than Board members and even the New York Fed leader.

"FANG" and other big cap tech have faded as favorite trades, but i nvesting in foreign stocks as a way to generate better returns is just beginning. Finding opportunities amid the market volatility is "mission critical," and there are several to be had this year, according to Evercore ISI. Julian Emanuel at Evercore says stocks performed very well over the last two quarters. However, he says oversold, steady-earning stocks could still trade higher after earnings. Investors won't walk away from 2022 with a lot of happy memories, but Julian Emanuel of Evercore ISI says there were two surprisingly positive periods for stocks in an otherwise difficult year. The reason, he wrote, is because investors thought things might get even worse, and stocks and bonds were both oversold as a result. But he doesn't think that will happen again, which means he thinks this earnings season will be harder to endure.
Then Fed officials get on the tape say they're going to keep raising rates and keep them high until hell freezes over. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic on Monday said the central bank should raise interest rates above 5% and stay there for "a long time." Inflation data continues to show signs of cooling, but it's still high, and the Fed doesn't want to declare victory so they keep jawboning the markets down. The source of tension is that the trading community doesn't want to believe the Fed, and many are arguing the Fed is using stale data. "Wall Street does not believe the story being spun by the Fed," Harry Katica from Saut Strategy told his clients.

"This is the definition of a soft landing," Apollo Global's chief economist Torsten Slok said on CNBC's " Closing Bell " on Friday. The price hikes at Conagra were crazy. If December's consumer price index, out Thursday, is benign (below the 6.5% year over year growth expected), the market could move even higher.
Netflix's new ad-supported tier accounted for 13% of subscribers in its first month, new Evercore research found. Evercore believes the ad tier is driving incremental subscriber growth for Netflix.
