CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago children's hospital has been forced to take its networks offline after an unspecified digital attack, limiting access to medical records and hampering communication by phone or email since the middle of last week. Lurie Children's Hospital initially described the issue Wednesday as a network outage. On Thursday, officials released public statements saying the hospital had taken its networks offline as part of its response to a “cybersecurity matter." Health care providers aren't alone; state courts, county or state governments and schools all have struggled to recover from cyber-based attacks. Chicago-area pediatrician practices that work with the hospital also have reported being unable to access digital medical records because of the attack.

It allows the city to suspend a landlord’s rental license if police answer four or more “nuisance” calls in a year. I spent the bulk of my Friday column summarizing early Republic and antebellum debates on the nature of the American Republic. CNN —The longstanding problem of pulse oximeters providing less-accurate readings for people with dark skin tones is getting another look from a panel of experts for the US Food and Drug Administration. The FDA’s Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee is meeting Friday to review ways to better evaluate the accuracy and performance of pulse oximeters in patients with darker skin. Pulse oximeters are fingertip clamps that send light beams through your finger to estimate the oxygen saturation of your blood and your pulse rate. “That standard is then applied to all people as a one-size-fits-all, but time and again, we have seen in medicine that this approach leads to poor outcomes for certain groups, especially Black patients,” Ibekie said. “We need to address the root and work harder to conduct research with patients that represent our populations as a whole,” she said.

New York CNN —Earnings season is in full swing, and that means investors get a chance to hear from multinational companies about the state of the global economy. Some of the United States’ biggest companies are in the hot seat to answer questions about the economy, and where it could be headed. Like the rest of the US, companies are watching whether the economy could still tip into a recession as interest rates hover around a 23-year high. Achieving a soft landing, or a situation in which inflation comes down without an economic downturn, looks likely, some companies said. LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the nation's largest real estate brokerages has agreed to pay $70 million as part of a proposed settlement to resolve more than a dozen lawsuits across the country over agent commissions. In October, a federal jury in Missouri found that the National Association of Realtors and several large real estate brokerages, including Keller Williams, conspired to require that home sellers pay homebuyers' agent commission in violation of federal antitrust law. More than a dozen similar lawsuits are pending against the real estate brokerage industry. Two other large real estate brokerages agreed to similar settlement terms last year. In their respective pacts, Anywhere Real Estate Inc. agreed to pay $83.5 million, while Re/Max agreed to pay $55 million.
