Oil demand will rise for another 10 years, though producers are pulling back on new investment. The bank estimated oil demand would peak around 110 million barrels a day in 2034. AdvertisementThe global oil market could run into a supply shortage as peak demand is still a decade away, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. That's due to rising oil demand in Asia and increasing demand for petroleum products, the analysts said. "While peak oil demand is still a decade away, capital is slowing for the production of crude oil and oil products, contributing to constrained supply in the medium term," they later added.

Fundstrat's Tom Lee, who's been correctly nailing the stock market for the past few years, hinted that he was about to hike his year-end S & P 500 target even with the benchmark at record highs. Lee's 5,800 call would represent another 6% gain for the S & P 500 from current levels. Lee believes a strong force that could help lift the market is the $6 trillion in cash that's in money market funds. Lee would join a host of others on Wall Street who have recently raised their S & P 500 targets. On June 14, Goldman Sachs increased its price target on the S & P to 5,600.

Scott Wren, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, recently noted that market breadth is abnormally narrow. He found that the five best performers in the S&P 500 accounted for nearly three-fifths of its exceptional 10.6% year-to-date gain through May 31. That fate will soon apply to the S&P 500, Wren warned. Such a sell-off would take the S&P 500 below 5,000 for the first time since April. "And it's tough to be patient when the S&P 500 set a bunch of all-time high records."

"Flying Fairy," a 53% alcohol from Shanghai-listed Kweichow Moutai , saw wholesale prices drop by more than 5% in a week. He agreed the drop in wholesale prices won't have a big impact on Moutai's immediate earnings. What's also different about Moutai's stock decline is that investors aren't rushing in to bottom fish as they have in the past, Ye said. "The recent wholesale price drop we think is mostly triggered by the arbitragers in the market," Morningstar's Song said. She expects wholesale prices to increase in coming months given major Chinese holidays in the fall.

Banking regulators on Friday disclosed that they found weaknesses in the resolution plans of four of the eight largest American lenders. The Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said that the so-called living wills — plans for unwinding huge institutions in the event of distress or failure — of Citigroup , JPMorgan Chase , Goldman Sachs and Bank of America filed in 2023 were inadequate. Regulators found fault with the way each of the banks planned to unwind their massive derivatives portfolios. The living wills are a key regulatory exercise mandated in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis. "We are fully committed to addressing the issues identified by our regulators," New York-based Citigroup said in a statement.

With stocks set to close out a strong first half of 2024, investors have just one more key inflation hurdle to clear in the week ahead: May's personal expenditure report. Next week's personal consumption expenditure data, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, could show whether that overall picture is intact. May's consumer price index, for example, showed no increase from the prior month. Last month's producer price index , a measure of wholesale prices, unexpectedly dropped from the previous reading. The big storyEmerging markets have been on tenterhooks for the better part of this year as the Federal Reserve has been dangling the prospect of an interest rate cut. Historically, as U.S. interest rates fall, the allure of the mighty dollar fades to the benefit of other currencies. Indeed, unlike most developed economies, India's interest rate regime in 2024 isn't any different from that of 2018. There lies the disconnect between the economy, the stock market, and a single stock. In 2023, Texas led the nation in solar installations on its power grid, surpassing California for its second consecutive year.
