BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Escalating tensions between Colombia and Israel over the Gaza war could undo decades of close military ties between them and hamper Colombia’s ability to fight drug traffickers and rebels, security analysts say. Hamas released an American mother and daughter who were kidnapped by the Palestinian group during its deadly Oct. 7 attack and held hostage for almost two weeks in Gaza. A U.S. journalist has been detained in Russia, her employer said, the second such case since the war in Ukraine started. RFE/RL said Kurmasheva, who is based in Prague, has been charged with failure to register as a foreign agent, a designation Russia requires of any organizations or individuals that it perceives as receiving foreign funding. The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, said RFE/RL, which is a U.S. government-funded media company. Kurmasheva was waiting for her passports to be returned when the new charge was announced on Wednesday, RFE/RL said. Gershkovich and his employer deny all charges against him and is considered "wrongfully detained" by the U.S. government.

OTTAWA, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats from India amid a dispute over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Thursday, adding that Ottawa would not take retaliatory steps. Joly said India had threatened to unilaterally revoke the diplomats' official status by Friday unless they left. "Given the implications of India's actions on the safety of our diplomats, we have facilitated their safe departure from India," she told a press conference. Canada now has 21 diplomats in India. Immigration Minister Marc Miller said the diplomats' departure meant Canada would slash the number of embassy staff dealing with immigration.

Atlanta CNN —A US-Russian dual national working for Radio Free Europe has been detained in Russia and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent, the US-funded news organization reported Wednesday. Alsu Kurmasheva is currently employed as a journalist and editor for the Tatar-Bashkir service of Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and is based in Prague. According to her employer, Kurmasheva was detained on June 2 in the city of Kazan in Russia while waiting for a return flight to the Czech Republic. According to RFE/RL, Kurmasheva is an accomplished journalist who has been writing about the life of ethnic minorities in Russia’s Tatarstan and Bashkortostan regions for many years. He’s the first US journalist to be accused of spying by Moscow since 1986, when US reporter Nick Daniloff was detained on a similar charge.

CNN —Cambodia’s newest and biggest airport opened to commercial operations in the province of Siem Reap in the country’s northwest this week. The China-funded Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is now the main gateway to one of the country’s most popular tourist sites, the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Complex. Using the International Air Transport Association-designated code SAI, it replaces Siem Reap International Airport (REP), which first opened in 1932 and is only a few kilometers away from the Angkor complex. Located in Siem Reap province, the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park is one of Cambodia's most famous sites. The country is on track to receive approximately 4.5 to five million international tourists by the end of this year, says the ministry.

The State Department also updated its travel advisory to Lebanon to a Level 4, urging U.S. citizens not to travel to the country. A statement on the embassy’s website said commercial options to depart Lebanon remain available, adding that U.S. citizens who are in the country and choose not to depart should prepare contingency plans for emergency situations. Israel has evacuated areas close to its northern border with Lebanon in wake of attacks from Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in recent days. Demonstrations by Hezbollah are planned in Lebanon, including close to the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday, the country's national news agency said.
