One Reno car wash is turning away burners after caked-on mud and clay damaged its machinery. Finding a way to get them clean is proving to be difficult — and annoying some car wash managers in the process. One car wash said it is turning away excessively muddy cars, due to dirt causing damage to the machinery, AP reported. Neither Burning Man nor Sierra Car Wash immediately responded to Insider's request for comment ahead of publication. Difficulty at the car wash isn't the only issue that the rain and mud caused burners.

Video of a jeep stuck in mud can be traced back to Aug. 15 and is not related to the Burning Man arts and music festival that took place in the Nevada desert Aug. 27 to Sep. 4. The video, however, can be traced back to a TikTok post on Aug. 15 (here), predating the Burning Man festival. The posts circulated as thousands of revelers attending the Burning Man festival on Sept. 2 were left stranded amid heavy downpours that turned the Black Rock Desert campsite into a sea of sticky mud, Reuters reported (here). CNN —US stocks typically see their worst performance of the year in September, but there are signs the market could avoid a steep downturn this time around. This month has been the worst for stocks on average since 1928, according to Yardeni Research. That’s partly because, much like August, there is a lull in economic data that could catalyze a stock rally. While stocks fell roughly 2% in August, they still outperformed their 4% loss during the same month last year. It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer, reports my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn.

VENICE, Sept 7 (Reuters) - With migrant arrivals once again surging in Italy, director Matteo Garrone has brought a film to Venice showing the perilous journey from Africa to Europe through the eyes of two naive, but plucky Senegalese teenagers. "In these years we have got used to the idea that they are only numbers and we forget that behind these numbers there are people, there are families, there are dreams, there are souls," Garrone told Reuters following the premiere of "Me Captain". "(The film) was born out the idea of wanting to change the point of view," said Garrone, whose previous movies include the crime dramas "Gomorrah" and "Dogman". Almost 115,300 boat migrants have reached Italy so far this year against 61,870 at the same point in 2022. "Me Captain" is the second film tackling the theme of immigration at this year's Venice Film Festival, following "Green Border", which depicted the nightmares awaiting migrants at the crossing between Poland and Belarus.

Four 1,900-year-old Roman swords found in cave in Israel
  + stars: | 2023-09-06 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Archaeologists have found four Roman swords and a shafted weapon known as a pilum dating from 1,900 years ago in a cave near the shore of the Dead Sea in Israel. Amir Ganor/Israel Antiquities AuthorityFurther investigation revealed four swords “in an almost inaccessible crevice on the upper level of the cave,” the statement said. Three of the swords had iron blades inside wooden scabbards and measured 60-65 centimeters (24-26 inches) in length. Further excavations uncovered a bronze “Bar Kokhba” coin dating from 132–135 CE, possibly dating the swords, according to the press release. At this time, the Bar Kokhba Revolt, also known as the Second Jewish Revolt, saw Jews rebel against Roman rule in the area.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Four Roman-era swords, their wooden and leather hilts and scabbards and steel blades exquisitely preserved after 1,900 years in a desert cave, surfaced in a recent excavation by Israeli archaeologists near the Dead Sea, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Wednesday. The cache of exceptionally intact artifacts was found about two months ago and tells a story of empire and rebellion, of long-distance conquest and local insurrection. The swords were dated based on their typology, and have not yet undergone radiocarbon dating. Political Cartoons View All 1145 ImagesThe cool, arid and stable climate of the desert caves has allowed exceptional preservation of organic remains, including hundreds of ancient parchment fragments known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer. Extreme heat in Florida also disrupted attendance at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando this summer. Theme parks are building indoor rides and changing ticket policies to respond to brutal weather conditions. Golding has lowered his estimates for the theme park industry because of growing risks from extreme weather. SeaWorld warns in its annual report to investors that extreme weather events could cause it to “incur significant costs.”“The series of extreme weather events experienced in recent years presents an alarming trend,” SeaWorld said.

The past two years, I’ve asked myself that question more times than in all the years before. I can see Burning Man — a gathering of more than 70,000 people in a sere and beautiful northwestern Nevada desert full of art and music and foolishness and delight — headed for the climate emergency’s cliff edge. It may not move, it may not end, but it will change. This year started off as one for the history books. Obviously, the weather at the ending was also one for the history books — for very different reasons.

[1/5] Ancient swords, believed by the Israel Antiquities Authority to be from the Roman era dating back 1,900 years and found in a weapons cache in a cave in an Israeli desert, are displayed in Jerusalem, September 6, 2023. The fashioning of three of the blades recalls Roman "spatha" swords, and the fourth has a ring-pommel handle consistent with the period, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said. The rare find included a shafted Roman "pilum" spear. A coin from the time of the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132-135 AD was found at the entrance to the cave. "Obviously, the rebels did not want to be caught by the Roman authorities carrying these weapons."

Global oil prices backed off the $90 a barrel mark early Wednesday as traders digested the news that Saudi Arabia and Russia would extend their summer production cuts until December. The move is likely to keep U.S. gas prices higher for longer. Many nations joined in putting sanctions on Russian oil when President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022. But large oil consumers such as China and India continue to buy Russian oil. Rising oil prices will also be a concern for the Federal Reserve as its campaign to tame inflation is finally bearing fruit.

Many of us (myself included) raise an eyebrow at Burning Man. Burning Man would feel much less annoying if the festival just said, yeah, we’re a bunch of idiots who want to party in Mad Max costumes. The Burning Man organizers wrote in a statement: “Burning Man is a community of people who are prepared to support one another. One hopes that events like the flooding at Burning Man will be galvanizing, both for those who experienced it and those who watched in horror from afar. It’s easy to sniff at Burning Man, which seems at once so self-important and so very insubstantial.

US Sanctions Deputy Leader of Sudan's RSF Over Abuses

By Michelle NicholsN'DJAMENA (Reuters) - The United States is imposing sanctions on the deputy leader of Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over human rights abuses, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations will announce during a trip to Chad's border with Sudan on Wednesday. Previous sanctions, levied on companies, also targeted the army. While the sanctions carry political weight, it is unclear that they would have any impact on the course of the current conflict. In June, the U.S. imposed sanctions on companies it accused of fuelling the conflict in Sudan. The U.S. Treasury Department targeted two companies affiliated with Sudan's army and two companies affiliated with the RSF, accusing them of generating revenue from the conflict and contributing to the fighting.
