Read previewHugo Boss, Burberry, Richemont, and Swatch have all called out slumping sales in China this week as consumers cut back on luxury spending. Swiss watch group Swatch said it expects the Chinese market "to remain challenging for the entire luxury goods industry until the end of the year." But much of this spending has been overseas, and sales in China have fallen for some of the world's biggest luxury brands. AdvertisementBefore the pandemic, about two-thirds of Chinese luxury spending occurred outside mainland China, plummeting to less than 10% in 2021 and 2022 because of travel restrictions, according to data from Bain. The consultancy said that this started to rebound in 2023 with the return of overseas tourism, with an estimated 30% of luxury spending taking place outside mainland China.

London/Rome CNN —Italy’s competition authority is investigating whether Armani and Dior have misled consumers about their production processes, following reports that local companies in their supply chains pay workers too little and force them to work long hours. The firms are being investigated for possible “unlawful” conduct in the marketing and sale of clothes and accessories, in violation of Italy’s Consumer Code, it noted. Many mainstream fashion brands have long faced allegations of exploitative working conditions in their supply chains. The probe comes after Milan prosecutors accused several Chinese-owned firms in Italy, producing luxury goods for Dior and Armani, of systematically abusing their employees, Reuters reported. Armani has denied the allegations levied by the competition authority, but said it would cooperate with the latest investigation.

Silicon Valley has been laying off workers by the tens of thousands, making tech work almost impossible to come by. Millennials believed they were heading to Silicon Valley in service of a lofty mission. AdvertisementIf Silicon Valley is going out of vogue, what will take its place as the next hot destination? Civil service doesn't come with the pay or the glamour of tech jobs, but it offers the stability that college students say they want. When I speak to college students these days, I'm struck by how they lack the naivete I suffered from when I was their age.

Hugo Boss shares plunged as much as 10% Tuesday after the company cut its sales outlook, becoming the latest high-end fashion line to warn of persistent woes in the luxury sector. The German fashion house said Monday that it expects full-year sales of up to 4.35 billion euros ($4.73 billion), down slightly from a previous forecast of up to 4.45 billion euros. The company attributed the revised outlook to "persistent macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges" and cited China and the U.K. as particularly challenging markets. Shares pared losses slightly to trade down 8.8% as of 9:53 a.m. London time. The guidance cut is the company's second so far this year, after the retailer in March said that 2024 sales growth was likely to slow to 3% to 6%.

Newly produced electric vehicles are being seen at Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, on December 31, 2023. Costfoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBEIJING — New tariffs on Chinese electric cars aren't enough to help foreign automakers stay competitive, especially in the lucrative China market, according to consulting firm AlixPartners. While collaborations are "rational" to attain market share, Dyer said it is difficult to stay in the China market long-term if foreign carmakers don't switch things up. Last month, an analyst from the Bank of America said U.S. automakers based in Detroit should exit China "as soon as they possibly can" because they were at the losing end against China EV giants. Electric cars are less complex than internal combustion engine-powered vehicles.

Sporting events such as the ongoing Euro 2024, the upcoming Copa Americana and Paris Olympics, coupled with hotter weather, are expected to drive up demand for the beverage. Pointing to the Euro 2024, Chinese online database QiChaCha noted that bars and stores have been decorated with European Cup merchandise and they are offering sports-themed meals to cash in on the frenzy. "The European Cup ignites the 'beer economy,'" the firm said, adding that China's beer industry had shown a clear trend towards high-end offerings. They also expect China's beer industry to continue to benefit from a product mix upgrade, besides lower barley prices and packaging material prices in 2024. Carlsberg chief executive Jacob Aarup-Andersen said that brewers will be boosted by events such as the Paris Olympics and the Euro 2024, according to the report.

Swatch Group reported a steep fall in first half sales and earnings on Monday as the world's biggest watchmaker struggled with weaker demand in China. The sales figure missed the 3.75 billion francs forecast by analysts in a consensus gathered by Visible Alpha. Net profit tumbled to 147 million francs from 498 million francs, it added. Sales during the first half of the year were hurt by a negative currency impact of 145 million francs, it noted. Sales figures outside of China in local currencies were at the level of 2023, a record year, Swatch said.

The Macy's company logo is seen at the Macy's store on Herald Square on January 19, 2024 in New York City. Macy's department-store chain announced that they will be laying off roughly 2,350 employees which is about 3.5% of their workforce. Arkhouse and Brigade had for months been attempting to buy out the storied retailer. Arkhouse, after its initial efforts had been rebuffed, said earlier this year it intended to mount a proxy fight for control of Macy's. But the legacy department store operator's efforts to grow sales have been stymied by high inflation, as consumers become more selective about spending on discretionary items.
