DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ford on Thursday reported significant growth in the third quarter, although its financial results fell short of Wall Street estimates. The results came out just a day after Ford reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union. The Ford deal could set the pattern for agreements with the other two automakers, where workers will remain on strike. The UAW called on all workers at Ford to return to their jobs and said that will put pressure on GM and Stellantis to bargain. Shares in Ford Motor Co., which is based in Dearborn, Michigan, were down 3.4% in after-hours trading following the earnings report.

The strike has shut down 13 locks between Lake Erie and Montreal, bottling up ships in the Great Lakes and preventing more ships from coming in. It’s the first time that a strike has shut down the vital shipping artery since 1968. A U.S. Navy warship, the littoral combat ship USS Marinette, was supposed to leave Cleveland on Lake Erie on Monday, but remains stuck. Shipments within the four Great Lakes from Superior to Erie such as iron ore and coal can still go through. Oct 26 (Reuters) - Australian producer Syrah Resources (SYR.AX) on Thursday said it expects buyers outside of China to step up their purchases of natural graphite before stricter export controls on the battery material came into effect on December 1. China, the world's largest graphite producer and exporter, will require export permits as of Dec. 1 for some graphite products, including spherical graphite used by electric vehicle makers. The export controls could mean that automakers and suppliers of battery materials will have to accelerate their search for alterative sources of the mineral. Syrah said that, based on feedback from its customers and analysts, buyers are looking to stockpile graphite to reduce the risk of near-term supply disruptions ahead of the ban, and ahead of China's winter when it tends to produce less natural graphite. "Any disruption or reduction in China anode precursor or AAM export supply without replacement supply would impact battery production outside China," it said.

When Shawn Fain sought the presidency of the United Automobile Workers union last year, he ran on a platform that promised: “No corruption. The platform helped propel Mr. Fain to the top job — where he has led a mounting wave of walkouts in recent weeks to demand more favorable contract terms. It was devised by a group called Unite All Workers for Democracy, which was officially formed in 2020 as a caucus — essentially, a political party within the union. The group set out to topple the ruling party, known as the Administration Caucus, which had run the union for more than 70 years. In 2022, Unite All Workers hashed out its party line, recruited candidates and ramped up a campaign operation to elect them.

BP buys $100 million worth of Tesla chargers

CNN —Oil and gas company BP has agreed to purchase $100 million worth of electric vehicle chargers from Tesla. This marks the first time Tesla has ever sold chargers to another company, according to an announcement from BP. BP will begin installing the chargers next year, but no specific number of chargers was mentioned in the announcement. These chargers won’t look like other Tesla chargers, though. BP Pulse, BP’s EV charging business, operates 27,000 charging points currently and has announced plans for rapid expansion.

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - BP's (BP.L) electric vehicle charger unit is ordering $100 million worth of Tesla (TSLA.O) ultra-fast chargers for rollout in the United States, the first deployment of Tesla's chargers on an independent network, the companies said on Thursday. "Selling our fast-charging hardware is a new step for us, and one we're looking to expand," Tesla's senior director for charging infrastructure Rebecca Tinucci said in a statement. "(This) is a major step forward in our ambitions for high speed, open access charging infrastructure in the U.S.," BP Pulse global CEO Richard Bartlett said. The 250 kilowatt BP Pulse-branded chargers will be compatible with both Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors enabling the charging of EV models from other carmakers. Automakers have been moving to adopt Tesla's NACS, taking the Elon Musk-led company's superchargers closer to becoming the industry standard at the expense of the rival CCS.

REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Volkswagen AG FollowBERLIN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) on Thursday warned the outlook for commodity markets remained uncertain after confirming it took a major hit to its third-quarter profit from raw materials hedges. Like many other industrial firms, automakers hedge against commodity price swings, potentially leading to non-cash gains or losses, usually at the end of each quarter. This led to a 2.5 billion euro ($2.64 billion) non-cash loss in the third quarter that it will be unable to offset by the end of the year. "The further development of the commodity markets remains unpredictable," Volkswagen said. Volkswagen on Thursday confirmed it posted 78.8 billion euros in third-quarter sales and a 14% rise in operating profit to 4.9 billion euros.

Hertz also disclosed on Thursday that about 80% of the battery electric cars in its fleet are Teslas today. About 11% of Hertz's entire fleet is comprised of electric cars now. With around 50,000 electric cars in its fleet currently, that means Hertz has around 35,000 Teslas in its fleet now. That number is far shy of the 100,000 Tesla electric cars Hertz originally said it was ordering from Tesla by the end of 2022. Musk frequently says that electric cars require less maintenance than counterparts with internal combustion engines (including plug-in hybrid electrics).

When autoworkers went on strike in September, executives of the large U.S. automakers warned that union demands could significantly undermine their ability to compete in a fast-changing industry. The chief executive of Ford Motor said that the company might have to scrap its investment in electric vehicles. Ford’s cost will rise under the terms of the new contract, which includes a 25 percent raise over four and a half years, improved retirement benefits and other provisions. But analysts said those increases should be manageable. If anything, he said, the deal will help Ford, in part because the four-year contract ensures there will be no labor strife during an intense phase of the transition to electric vehicles.

The United Auto Workers has reached a tentative agreement with Ford on a four-and-a-half year contract. The 25% general wage increase is more than Ford workers' total pay rise between 2001 and 2022, the UAW said. Temporary workers at Ford are set to see their pay increase by two-and-a-half times. And the starting wage for Ford workers will go up by 68% over the term of the contract, the union said. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 25 (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales are expected to rise in October but the outlook for the rest of the year remains uncertain owing to the auto workers strike at Detroit Three, a report from S&P Global Mobility showed on Wednesday. "On the surface, with a projected SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate) result of 15.7 million units, October auto sales will be stronger than they appear," said Chris Hopson, principal analyst at S&P Global Mobility. New total light vehicle sales in October are estimated to be 1.22 million units, up 3.3% year-over-year, according to the report. "As of the week ended October 22, nearly 150,000 units of vehicle production have been lost due to the respective plant strikes," according to the report. While the impact on sales has been limited in the month of September, production disruptions caused by the strike are expected to affect October sales for the Detroit Three and will likely be sustained in November, the report added.

A Honda logo is seen during the New York International Auto Show, in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., April 5, 2023. GM cited a joint statement that pointed to the projects the companies are still working on together in acknowledging the end of EV plan. A spokesman confirmed she was referring to the Honda EV partnership. The automakers had said the deal was for "affordable" EVs, including compact crossover vehicles, built using GM's Ultium battery technology. "After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment, we are ending development of an affordable EV," Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe was quoted by Bloomberg as saying in an interview.

But if the UAW can reach a tentative agreement with Ford, it would be used as a model to seek similar contract settlements with GM and Stellantis. Typically, during past auto strikes, a UAW deal with one automaker has led the other companies to match it with their own settlements. About 32% of the union’s 146,000 members at the automakers are now on strike and getting by on $500 per week in strike pay. The UAW also wants traditional defined-benefit pension plans restored for workers who were hired after 2007, an end to varying tiers of wages for UAW workers, pension increases for retirees and other benefits. One key issue is whether to extend the national UAW contract to 11 U.S. electric vehicle battery factories.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union and Ford Motor have agreed in principle to the terms of a tentative agreement that would end a nearly six-week strike at the automaker, sources with knowledge of the discussions confirmed Wednesday to CNBC. Any deal would still need to be ratified by a simple majority of Ford's 57,000 union-represented workers. The automaker and the union participated in intense bargaining Tuesday and Wednesday in an attempt to finalize a record deal, according to the sources. However, a tentative agreement with Ford would likely be used as a template to negotiate with Stellantis and GM. The union expanded strikes against both of those automakers at major plants this week.

Tesla faces Justice Department probe of range claim

New York CNN —The Justice Department is investigating whether or not Tesla cars can live up to the EPA’s official estimates of how far they can go on a single charge. But Consumer Reports has conducted tests that it said shows Tesla vehicles fall well short of the advertised range, no matter the weather. The organization conducted its own range tests on the Tesla Model Y as well as the Volkswagen ID.4, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The ID.4 and Mach-E both did slightly better than claimed in warm weather, the Ioniq 5 got within two miles of the claim of a 256-mile range. It went 274 miles in warm weather in the Consumer Reports test, compared to the official EPA stated range of 326 miles.
