CNN —Huge protests across Bangladesh escalated into deadly violence this week with clashes between students, pro-government supporters and armed police fueling widespread anger over civil service job quotas opponents say are discriminatory. Many Bangladeshi students are demanding an end to the government’s quota system, which reserves more than half of civil service posts for certain groups. In 2018, the quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. Critics and protesters say the quota system creates a two-tier Bangladesh where a politically connected elite benefit by their birth. “This is not just about quota protests anymore, this is much bigger than that, in simple quota protests the government wouldn’t go around hurting and shooting students.

CNN —Paul Whelan, an American detained in Russia, told CNN he has “sympathy and empathy” for Evan Gershkovich following the conviction and sentencing of the Wall Street Journal reporter, but expressed hope that the development could open the door for a deal to secure both of their release. Whelan, who called CNN from his remote prison camp in Mordovia Friday, said he was able to watch a news broadcast about the sentencing. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier Friday that the US government is working “quite literally every day” to bring Gershkovich and Whelan home. “Look, any effort to bring any American home is going to be part of a process of back-and-forth discussion, potentially negotiation. And I don’t think that’s dependent on an election in the United States or anywhere else,” he said.

But before my second was born, my family moved to rural New Hampshire for my husband's job. The kids' school (a town over) is 20 minutes from home, while the grocery store is 25. When the kids inevitably break a bone during their adventures, we need to drive 45 minutes to the hospital. My life feels more relaxed hereAfter three years of living in that town, going even more rural felt like an easy choice. My kids didn't choose to live in the middle of nowhere, and I don't want it to hold them back.

Then, when my husband and I got married, we stopped eating meat altogether — and almost 50 years later, we're still eating a vegetarian diet, though we occasionally eat fish. I don't like the taste of that either, but with a whopping 25 grams of protein per tablespoon, it's worth it. If you're a regular meat eater, you can start by eating less meat and more vegetables.

CrowdStrike is well-known in the cybersecurity industry, but until today, I don't think anyone was aware of its dominance as a platform on Windows. However, CrowdStrike might have evidence to suggest that this is a freak accident, so I don't think it's fair to point fingers too much. I don't think that's realistic. Lulls on work email were filled by push notifications from the New Yorker about an article I'd never have time to read, or "news" from Facebook. During those eight months, for the first time, I experimented with new work approaches and established guidelines to protect my time. On weekdays, I didn't check my email until I arrived at work and only once after I left. This was most apparent during a presentation I gave on behalf of a client to the Department of Justice that August. When doing a similar presentation months earlier, I'd canceled weekend plans and worked late nights to prepare.
