The National Labor Relations Board said Tuesday it found merit to charges that Amazon violated labor laws by refusing to bargain with a fledgling union representing employees at one of its New York warehouses. Workers at one of the retail giant's Staten Island warehouses, known as JFK8, voted last April to join the Amazon Labor Union, a grassroots organization started by current and former employees. The NLRB complaint comes as the ALU has faced setbacks since its landmark victory on Staten Island. The ALU lost two elections at other Amazon warehouses last year, and rifts have formed between some leaders and members of the union. On Monday, a group of former ALU members sued the union, accusing it of violating the ALU's constitution and asking a Brooklyn court to compel it to hold an election for union officers.

New data shows Apple TV+ has more than tripled its share of streaming subscribers. More established streamers have had the most success growing their ad tiers. The findings come as Apple TV+ is rumored to be planning to join the other major streamers in chasing video advertising. Apple TV+ has more than tripled its share of ad-free subscribers in the past two years, jumping ahead of Paramount+, Disney's Hulu, and Warner Bros. But Apple TV+ has yet to move into ad-supported streaming, where competitors are seeing their biggest subscriber growth — not to mention new revenue opportunities.

July 11 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. All else equal, this would be a tailwind for Asian stocks, bonds and currencies. A New York Fed survey of consumer and inflation expectations was also "risk-friendly." Sentiment toward Asian stocks in recent months has been mostly bearish, with the exception of Japan, but a pause in the selling on Monday lifted the gloom a little. Chinese and broader Asian stocks rose for the first time in four sessions, while the yuan and yen strengthened to two-week highs against the dollar.

Last week, Meta launched its latest social media venture, a Twitter alternative called Threads. For social media start-ups, attracting an audience is crucial to scaling a new product — but it can be near impossible to lure loyal users away from other platforms. New Threads accounts can easily migrate their information from Instagram, sharing their account data and username between the platforms. They have this pattern now of either launching or creating spin-off social media networks based on what's most popular at the time, then do it under their brand," Caraballo said. "It just is so dystopian to have one single person basically who oversees the entirety of all social media, at least in the Western world," Caraballo told Insider.

The world's largest memory chip and smartphone maker estimated its operating profit fell to 600 billion won ($459 million) in April-June, from 14.1 trillion won a year earlier in a short preliminary earnings statement. It would be Samsung's lowest profit for any quarter since a 590 billion won profit in the first quarter of 2009, according to company data. Shares in Samsung fell 1.4% in early morning trade, underperforming a 0.6% drop in the wider market (.KS11). In the January-March quarter, the company reported a whopping 4.58 trillion won loss in its chip business as memory chip prices fell further and its inventory values were slashed. Revenue in April to June likely fell 22% from the same period a year earlier to 60 trillion won, Samsung said in the statement.

It took seven years for Tim Cook to visit India again after traveling to the fast-growing country in 2016. That year, about 3.5% of the world's iPhones were made in India. "Without that broader supply base, they had production shortfalls which impacted their sales, which they might not have suffered as much had they had multiple sources." Moving more iPhone manufacturing from China to India sounds like a good idea on paper. Watch the video above to find out why Apple is betting on India and the challenges it faces as it slowly shifts its manufacturing base from China to India.

SEOUL, July 6 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics' (005930.KS) June-quarter profit is expected to plunge 96% on-year to the lowest for any quarter in more than 14 years, as a chip glut continues to drive large losses in the tech giant's cash cow business despite a supply cut. If so, it would be Samsung's lowest profit since the fourth quarter of 2008, when Samsung Electronics reported a consolidated operating loss of about 740 billion won. It compares with an operating profit of 14.1 trillion won in the April-June quarter last year. This is because its chip division, traditionally its biggest earner, likely reported quarterly losses of around 3 trillion to 4 trillion won as memory chip prices fell further and its inventory values were slashed. Despite the current downturn, Samsung is working to increase its share of chip demand from the exploding field of artificial intelligence (AI), such as with high bandwidth memory (HBM) and chip contract manufacturing, they said.

Netflix dropped its "Basic" ad-free $9.99 a month membership plan in Canada at the end of June. There are signs the streaming giant will sunset its "Basic" plan in the US as well. The removal of the "Basic" plan may signal Netflix's move to boost sign-ups for its ad-tier. There are also signs that the streaming giant may be sunsetting its "basic" membership plan for new US customers. Only time will tell whether Netflix's removal of its 'Basic' plan will leave a lasting impact on the streaming giant's bottom line.

Apple loses London appeal in 4G patent dispute with Optis
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) infringed two telecommunications patents used in devices including iPhones and iPads, London's Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, dismissing the tech giant's appeal in a long-running dispute with a U.S. patent holder. Texas-based Optis Cellular Technology LLC sued Apple in 2019 over its use of patents which Optis says are essential to certain technological standards, such as 4G. London's High Court ruled last year that two of Optis' 4G patents were so-called standard essential patents and that Apple had infringed them. Apple appealed against that decision in May, arguing that the two patents in issue were not essential to 4G standards and that it had not infringed the patents. Apple and Optis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A zombie building is one that's too costly for a landlord to rent at prevailing rates. Office buildings purchased in the past five years could become zombies, a real-estate vet said. Like many New York office buildings, it's a dead man walking, similar to the hopelessly distressed shopping malls that have multiplied across the country over the past decade. One in four office buildings in Manhattan is valued at less than they last sold for, according to JLL. Bringing zombies back to lifeUnlike in the movies, zombie buildings don't remain undead forever.
