But now that Harris is Trump's official 2024 opponent, more and more Republicans are urging the former president to back off the name-calling — including his former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway. Conway, a regular Fox News contributor, told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow on Monday that Trump needs to stop getting caught up with insults against Harris. Advertisement"The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see," Conway told Kudlow on Fox Business. "But I believe importantly that President Trump is right that she's a chameleon. That’s why, he said, he invested in AppHarvest, a startup that promised a high-tech future for farming and for the workers of Eastern Kentucky. Despite promising local jobs, the company eventually began contracting migrant workers from Mexico, Guatemala and other countries, numerous former employees told CNN. After about a week on the job, Vance took a meeting with AppHarvest founder Jonathan Webb, as Webb later recounted in a Fox News podcast interview. The company’s health care benefits attracted Morgan, a single father, who told CNN he took a pay cut to join the startup. Such comments ring hollow to some former AppHarvest workers, who argue Vance’s rhetoric as a candidate for vice president doesn’t align with the reality they experienced.

Trump may not have been president without Twitter, as his emergence as a political force in 2016 coincided with the site’s heyday. “There is a lot of opposition to people just hearing what President Trump has to say,” Musk said. At 8:35 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, a live audio stream on X of a conversation between Elon Musk and former President Donald J. Trump flickered to life after a 35-minute delay — but only for a moment. Mr. Trump’s mic came on, and a shuffling sound was heard. Mr. Musk’s account, which had been logged in and ready, then momentarily disappeared from the conversation entirely. Mr. Musk, who has endorsed Mr. Trump’s presidential run, and Mr. Trump greeted each other as “Donald” and “Elon.” They then began a friendly chat about immigration, the economy and President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. “I congratulate you,” Mr. Trump said to Mr. Musk about the livestream’s audience.

Well-being and cognitive declineMore research is needed due to the lack of diversity in this study, which also includes the fact that participants were volunteers from communities with higher levels of education, the study authors said. It’s possible that poor well-being may lead to cognitive impairment and vice versa. On one hand, greater well-being may lower risk for cognitive impairment and dementia by mitigating the effects of Alzheimer’s disease processes on cognition, the authors said. Positive well-being has been associated with lower levels of inflammatory cytokines and lower cardiovascular risk, which can reduce risk of cognitive impairments. Compared with participants who remained cognitively intact, those who developed cognitive impairment were more likely to be older and have lower body mass index (BMI) and lower psychological well-being.

Hunter Biden sought assistance from the U.S. government for a potentially lucrative energy project in Italy while his father was vice president, according to newly released records and interviews. The records, which the Biden administration had withheld for years, indicate that Hunter Biden wrote at least one letter to the U.S. ambassador to Italy in 2016 seeking assistance for the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, where he was a board member. Embassy officials appear to have been uneasy with the request from the son of the sitting vice president on behalf of a foreign company. “I want to be careful about promising too much,” wrote a Commerce Department official based in the U.S. Embassy in Rome who was tasked with responding.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris both want to end taxes on tips — and some policy experts have already criticized the idea. Her comments come roughly two months after Trump shared a similar idea, also at a rally in the service economy hotbed. Generally, tipped workers are lower-income individuals, and some 37% weren't subject to federal income tax in 2022, the report found. Not taxing tips is "a fairly narrowly targeted tax exemption," said Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst and modeling manager at the Tax Foundation.

Whatever other obstacles Mr. Trump and his campaign have faced, more voters have tended to trust him with the economy than the Biden-Harris ticket. According to at least one poll, though, voters’ attitudes may have changed. In a new survey conducted for The Financial Times, by a single point, Vice President Kamala Harris edges out Mr. Trump on the question of who voters trust more to handle the economy. But Ms. Harris’s slight edge on the economy in that Financial Times poll exists in the context of the numbers that came before it. To see the shift from Mr. Trump winning on the top issue to it being a jump ball will be an eye-opening finding if it is replicated in other polls.

Freed from the campaign trail and the grinding pursuit of another term, President Biden traveled to New Orleans on Tuesday to focus on a project close to his heart: the “moonshot” effort to sharply cut cancer deaths in the United States that he carried over from his time as vice president and has become a hallmark of his presidency. Speaking at Tulane University, Mr. Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden, announced eight research centers, including one at Tulane, that will collectively receive $150 million in research awards aimed at pioneering new methods of precision cancer surgery. Before addressing a crowd on campus, the president and the first lady met with a team of researchers who demonstrated the technology under development at Tulane. It uses imaging of cells on tumor sites to verify for surgeons that cancer cells have been fully removed and to reduce the need for follow-up surgeries. Standing in front of a sign reading “curing cancer faster,” Mr. Biden described touring cancer centers in Australia and Ireland, and being frustrated by a lack of international collaboration.

Pascrell checked himself into a hospital on July 14 with a fever, which his staff said may have been caused by a respiratory illness. WASHINGTON — The hard-right Freedom Caucus is pushing House Republican leaders to condition government funding on passage of new proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote and create a new deadline that faces broad Senate opposition. If GOP leaders attached it to government funding, it would spark a standoff with Democrats and President Joe Biden that risks a government shutdown. House and Senate Democrats favor a late 2024 deadline. Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., said the Freedom Caucus demands amount to “outrageous partisan pills” that are a “nonstarter,” calling for a bipartisan approach. “The House will continue its successful effort to responsibly fund the government for FY25 when it returns from its district work period.”

“I think we can all relate to this,” White House domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden told reporters Friday. Dubbed the “Time is Money” initiative, the actions will make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions, get refunds, submit health care and insurance forms online, and access high-quality customer service. Another existing effort cited by the White House is a June 2023 FTC proposal to target companies that use deceptive customer feedback practices, like fake reviews. None of the actions that make up the “Time is Money” initiative will require congressional approval, a senior administration official said. The White House has pursued aggressive antitrust regulations and taken a highly skeptical approach to crypto currencies, both of which have rankled Wall Street.

Officially, the National Bureau of Economic Research defines a recession as "a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months." The last time that happened was early in 2020, when the economy came to an abrupt halt. Economists have wrestled with the growing disconnect between how the economy is doing and how people feel about their financial standing. For weeks, the signs did not look good for Kamala Harris in Michigan. The leader of a well-to-do neighborhood association told me that the way Ms. Harris got nominated resembled “entrapment.” And, at a street fair, I chatted with Tamika Daniels, an activist who was working to register formerly incarcerated people to vote. Ms. Daniels expressed skepticism about Ms. Harris because the vice president had once been a prosecutor. There was no sign of such skepticism at the Harris rally near the Detroit airport last Wednesday, where roughly 15,000 excited people waited hours to see her. If the Harris campaign is unable to address this thorny issue in a way that feels like substance, then Democrats may not get the unity they’ll need to win in November.
