Why the U.S. won't change physical cash
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Mark Licea | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The Federal Reserve will spend $931.4 million to print bills in 2023 — but there's a problem with U.S. cash. Physical currency has been updated around the world but not in the U.S., and while an increasing number of Americans are ditching cash for electronic payments, experts say cash isn't going away. In 2017, the $100 bill surpassed the $1 bill as the most popular currency denomination. Some speculate that the rise in $100 bills in circulation may be to avoid taxes or for illegal activity. … In the 1960s, the half dollar lost its place because it wasn't included in the use of parking meters," said Mudd.

NEW YORK (AP) — There are rituals to an Alexander Payne movie. “The Holdovers” is Payne's attempt to make not just a ‘70-set film but an actual ’70s film, styled after some of the movies he grew up with. “I like talking about other people’s movies more than my own,” Payne shrugged. But there was always that distant dream of not being a filmmaker but just going to film school. Most of us trained in film school like those ’70s guys.

Marketers have expressed cautious optimism looking ahead to 2024, with 60% of respondents in a new survey saying they plan to increase their ad budgets next year. Just 29% of respondents last year said they were expecting to increase their media budgets in 2023. Of the remaining 40% of those surveyed, roughly one-third (33%) said they intended to maintain their 2023 budgets into 2024. Meanwhile, print, linear TV, and radio were all likely to decline in their share of most marketers' budgets in 2024, according to the report. Around a third of advertisers said they plan to conduct log-level analysis of the programmatic supply chains in 2024 and 2025, according to the report.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and the Bank of England dramatically hiked rates over the last 18 months in a bid to tame runaway inflation. Reid also highlighted that this is the seventh time this cycle that markets have notably reacted on dovish speculation. "Clearly rates aren't going to keep going up forever, but on the previous 6 occasions we saw hopes for near-term rate cuts dashed every time. In clear, waiting for inflation to reach 2% before cutting rates would be 'overkill,'" Moëc said. However, minutes from last week's meeting reiterated the Monetary Policy Committee's expectations that rates will need to stay higher for longer, with U.K. CPI holding steady at 6.7% in September.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is being sued by his publisher for contradicting his book's claim about the the 2020 election. In a breach of contract lawsuit filed Friday in Florida, All Seasons cited media reports from last month alleging that Meadows knew Trump had lost to Democrat Joe Biden. “Meadows’ reported statements to the Special Prosecutor and/or his staff and his reported grand jury testimony squarely contradict the statements” in “The Chief's Chief,” according to the lawsuit, filed in Sarasota, Florida. “If such media reports are accurate, Meadows testified under oath that his book contains known falsehoods,” All Seasons alleged in its breach of contract suit. The All Seasons case is unusual both because it's based on media reports, not direct knowledge of Meadows' testimony, and because it's based on alleged factual errors.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Pulitzer Prizes, considered the premier award for print journalists, are opening eligibility to broadcast and audio companies that also offer digital news sites. But the work these companies can submit for prize consideration must primarily be written journalism, the Columbia University-based Pulitzer Prize Board said on Monday. Broadcast news outlets were historically prohibited from entering work in the Pulitzer competition because they produced little text-based journalism. Other competitions, like the Emmys and the duPont-Columbia Awards, honor broadcast journalism. “Although video may be part of the entry, these are not awards for broadcast journalism,” she said.

The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place. In this way, the DVD service acted more as an overstuffed old-school video store.
