The judge in Trump's fraud trial lashed out, again, at his lawyer. Trump's lawyer, on Friday, asked permission to criticize her. AdvertisementAdvertisementA baffled, irked judge overseeing Donald Trump's family company's fraud trial in Manhattan criticized one of his lawyers again for his repeated attacks on his law clerk. "It's a shame you've descended to this level," New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron told Trump's lawyer Christopher Kise. Asked by a lawyer from the New York Attorney General's office what reporting Kise was talking about, the Trump lawyer was unsure.

The House passed Republicans’ $14.3 billion Israel-aid bill on Thursday, although Senate Democrats have warned that the bill will be dead on arrival in their chamber. President Biden also said he would veto the measure. Photo: Michael Brochstein/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—The House passed Republicans’ $14.3 billion Israel-aid bill on Thursday, setting up a fight with the Democratic-controlled Senate, which is pursuing a much larger package that includes assistance to Ukraine. The measure was approved 226-196 in a largely party-line vote that masked broad underlying U.S. support for sending weapons and financing to Israel.

Twelve Democrats voted with 214 Republicans for the bill, and two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in objecting. Republicans have a 221-212 majority in the House, but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate 51-49. To become law, the bill would have to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by Biden. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday said the IRS cuts and Israel aid in the House bill would add nearly $30 billion to the U.S. budget deficit, currently estimated at $1.7 trillion. After the vote, Johnson urged the Senate and White House to quickly approve the bill.

The back-to-back appearances Thursday from Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump – who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – comes ahead of the former president’s own testimony on Monday. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are co-defendants in the case, along with their father, the Trump Org., and several company executives. Eric Trump acknowledged he provided information to former Trump Org. But he tried to distinguish between specific statements of financial condition – his father’s personal financial statements at the heart of the civil case – and general financial records for the company. Some internal policies and methodologies “have been bolstered” since the investigation began, Trump Jr. said.

CNN —Bayern Munich crashed out of the German Cup following a shock 2-1 defeat deep into stoppage time against third-tier FC Saarbrücken on Wednesday. Marcel Gaus scored the winning goal for Saarbrücken in the 96th minute, converting a low cross to spark delirium among the home fans. Bayern gave up possession after sloppy play at the back, and several Saarbrücken passes later, Patrick Sontheimer had a simple finish to make it 1-1 at Ludwigsparkstadion. As the game moved into stoppage time, substitute Tim Civeja found space behind the Bayern defense and crossed to Gaus, who netted an unlikely winning goal for Saarbrücken. Bayern had one last chance through Gnabry, but his shot was blocked and Saarbrücken could celebrate a famous win and a place in the third round of the German Cup.

House Passes Aid Package to Israel With IRS Cuts

The House narrowly approved an aid package for Israel on Thursday – a vote that ordinarily would have been an easy bipartisan victory but one complicated by Democrats’ accusation of a political “poison pill” in the GOP’s attempt to offset the new spending with cuts to the IRS. Democrats largely opposed the $14.3 billion aid package, acknowledging that while they support aid for Israel, the mechanism for providing it, along with the lack of funding in other areas, made it a nonstarter. “What the House Republicans have done is unprecedented and will mean any aid to Israel will be delayed,” Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut Democrat, said ahead of the vote. “This is the first time we have conditioned aid to Israel. Nevertheless, Speaker Mike Johnson forged ahead with the vote, seeming to dare Democrats to oppose the aid package.

While 3.3 million hectares (8.1 million acres) of the country's nearly 17 million hectares of palm plantation have been found in forests, only owners of plantations with a combined size of 1.67 million hectares have been identified, forestry ministry secretary general Bambang Hendroyono told reporters. Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD has threatened to pursue legal action against palm oil companies that use land illegally after the Thursday deadline passes. Indonesia has launched several programmes to improve governance in its massive palm oil industry, amid criticism by environmentalists of the crop's impact on deforestation.

But then he imposed a condition on the Israel money: Mr. Biden must agree to cut the same amount out of the money the Internal Revenue Service uses to chase down high-income tax cheats. Earlier this year, Republicans forced Mr. Biden to cut $20 billion from the I.R.S. cut isn’t really going to happen, as House Republicans know, because Mr. Johnson’s bill will die in the Senate, where many leading Republicans already oppose it. cut, he gets to show the same extremists who deposed his predecessor that he can play rough with the White House. Republicans have been trying to make sure that Israel and Ukraine aid are voted on separately. But Johnson's Israel bill is toxic for Democrats and increases the chance that the GOP gets jammed. AdvertisementAdvertisementMany Republicans really, really don't want to have to vote on a bill that includes both Israel and Ukraine aid. It would've been passed the House by an overwhelming bipartisan vote and applied significant pressure to senators who want to keep Israel aid linked with Ukraine aid. Nonetheless, Johnson's bill makes it only more likely that anti-Ukraine aid Republicans get rolled.

President Biden just signed an executive order regarding the development and use of AI technology. The broad executive order touches on more than a dozen possible uses of AI and generative AI that already are, or could in the future, directly impact people's lives. The size threshold is so high that currently most available models do not meet the criteria for further transparency called for in Biden's executive order.
