CNN —Hundreds of residents living near Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines were ordered to evacuate Tuesday after the volcano erupted, sending a three-mile tall (five-kilometer) ash column into the sky that caused dozens of flights to be canceled. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Mount Kanlaon erupted for six minutes on Monday evening, causing a “strong earthquake,” as the agency warned that ash fall and sulphuric odor would affect surrounding villages. Forty-three volcanic earthquakes had been recorded in the 24 hours to midnight Monday, according to the agency’s volcano summary. Images on social media showed an ash cloud shooting into the starry night sky. Situated on Negros, the fourth most populous island of the archipelago, Mount Kanlaon is one of 24 seismically active volcanoes in the country.

It's difficult to compare public school systems forensically because of the countries' vastly different populations and government infrastructures. However, feedback from my British friends has convinced me that the setup in the UK is more user-friendly for kids and parents. Kids in the UK start school as young as 4By law, children in the UK enter the publicly-funded British school system as young as 4. Kids wear uniformMost government-run schools in the UK require students to wear a school uniform. The protocols contrast those in the US, where most public school kids can wear what they want to class — albeit within reason.

Inflation in Turkey topped 75% in May in what economists expect to be the peak before prices start to ease. Consumer prices rose 75.45% in May on an annual basis and 3.37% on a monthly basis, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute, a government agency. Economists had previously forecast that inflation in the country of 85 million would peak around 75%. Turkey's central bank has kept its interest rate at 50% since March, citing the continuing need to counter climbing inflation in the country. The bank said at the time that "tight monetary stance will be maintained until a significant and sustained decline in the underlying trend of monthly inflation is observed."

E-Trade is having internal discussions about whether to ban Keith Gill — the meme stock trader who just disclosed a big position in GameStop — from the trading platform over concerns regarding potential market manipulation, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The brokerage, owned by Morgan Stanley , hasn't reached a decision yet, the Journal said, citing people familiar with deliberations inside the firm. GameStop shares shot up early Monday after Gill, who goes by "DeepF------Value" on Reddit, posted a screenshot of what could be his portfolio holding a significant amount of GameStop common shares and call options. The meme stock mania in 2021 led to a series of congressional hearings, including testimony by Gill, around brokers' practices and gamifying retail stock trading. Gill also faced several class action lawsuits, including one alleging that he pretended to be a novice trader despite being a licensed professional.

At a Holocaust museum in Atlanta, staff members had typically ended their tours by saying that many survivors of the death camps immigrated to Palestine. But after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the guides noticed that some students would ask a simple but complicated question: Is this the Palestine that we’ve been hearing about? So staff members at the museum, the Breman, made a few changes, according to Rabbi Joseph Prass, the museum’s education director. Now, docents explain to visitors that many Holocaust survivors found refuge in “the British Mandate of Palestine” or “the area that would become the country of Israel.”

The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur

On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

Her painful backstory was a good part of the reason why I, like many other gymnastics fans, pulled hard for Gabby Douglas when she announced her return to elite gymnastics. Had she made the team, Douglas would have been the oldest American woman to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics since 1952. Ross, a teammate of Douglas’ in London, was the youngest member of the “Fierce Five” that won team gold at that Olympics. And if she can’t make the national championships, she can’t make the US Olympic team. Dominique Moceanu, the diminutive, dynamic athlete on the “Magnificent Seven” 1996 Olympic gymnastics team, paralleled Douglas’ journey in some ways.

Nearly half, or 45%, of employers scrapped degree requirements for some roles in the past year, and 72% now prioritize skills over certificates in job candidates, according to the ZipRecruiter survey. The trend, which prioritizes a candidate's practical skills and real-world experience over formal education, appears to be "gaining momentum," according to ZipRecruiter. Meanwhile, hiring managers are being more explicit in job ads about the specific skills they seek in applicants, said Cory Stahle, an economist at the job site Indeed. What this means for job seekers"If the [job ad's] focus is on skills, the focus of your resume should be on skills as well," Stahle said. While skills should be "prominent" in such cases, that doesn't mean applicants should forgo traditional information, Stahle added.

According to the press release, the CFPB accused PHEAA of illegally collecting payments from student-loan borrowers whose loans had already been discharged in bankruptcy and sending "false information" to credit reporting agencies. Per the CFPB, American Education Services collected or tried to collect 7,934 private student loans after a bankruptcy proceeding between 2017 and 2021, and 177 of them were non-qualified education loans.
