Airplane fuselages bound for Boeing's 737 Max production facility await shipment on rail sidings at their top supplier, Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc., in Wichita, Kansas, on Dec. 17, 2019. Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems will furlough some 700 workers as a strike by machinists at the planemaker enters its sixth week, a spokesman for the supplier said Friday. Spirit AeroSystems had been scrambling to cut costs after more than 32,000 Boeing machinists walked off the job Sept. 13 after overwhelmingly rejecting a tentative labor deal with Boeing. "If the strike continues beyond November, we will have to implement layoffs and additional furloughs," spokesman Joe Buccino told CNBC on Friday. Spirit workers on Boeing's best-selling 737 Max are not affected, he added.

CNN —Voters in Moldova will cast their ballots Sunday in two crucial votes, which have been billed as the most consequential in the country’s post-Soviet history. Alongside a more sophisticated misinformation campaign, Shor has resorted to cruder methods to meddle with Moldovan politics. Home to a Romanian-speaking majority and large Russian-speaking minority, many Moldovans had long viewed Russia as a benign big brother. “It reflects the loss of the national allure of Russia in Moldovan society,” he said. “There’s limits (to what can be achieved).”But even if Sandu prevails in both the presidential vote and the EU referendum, he expects the Kremlin’s campaign to continue.

This ability to get electricity from one part of the country to another is ever more important as America’s grid is lashed by increasingly extreme weather. Extreme weather isn’t the only reason the grid needs to expand. “We run a VHS grid for a Hulu economy.”America’s grid is actually three grids: the Eastern and Western interconnections, plus the independent Texas grid. The physical electrical lines connecting all of the systems are fragile and outdated, experts told CNN. Clements cautioned that even a bigger grid can’t solve all the challenges posed by climate change-fueled extreme weather.

CNN —Editor’s Note: One Small Thing is a new series to help you take a simple step toward a healthy, impactful goal. But a little more investment in your community may make a big difference, said Dr. Gail Saltz, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. One in 5 adults in the United States reported feeling loneliness “a lot of the day yesterday,” according to Gallup data released Tuesday. Building back deeper, more intimate connections may feel hard to do quickly to address your loneliness, but turning your attention to invest in your community may be one small thing you can do to help, Saltz said. Even small daily interactions with strangers in a coffee shop can help boost your mood when you're feeling lonely.

CNN —The origin of modern humans’ long-standing love affair with carbs may predate our existence as a species, according to a new study. The study revealed these genes duplicated long before the advent of agriculture. Without amylase, humans would not be able to digest foods such as potatoes, pasta, rice or bread. The research also revealed duplication of the AMY1 gene existed in the genomes of Neanderthals and Denisovans, an extinct hominin first discovered in 2010 about whom relatively little is known. “This study’s genomic sleuthing is helping to finally time stamp some of those major milestones, and it is revealing tantalizing clues about humanity’s long love affair with starch.”

Harvard donations are down following a year of campus turmoil. AdvertisementHarvard saw a dip in donations in the most recent fiscal year amid a wave of big-name backers pulling their financial support after fallout from the university's response to the Israel-Hamas war. In fiscal year 2024, which ended June 30, the Ivy League institution brought in just under $1.2 billion in cash gifts, according to a Harvard financial report released Thursday. Some wealthy alumni publicly vowed to suspend donations to Harvard following the university's bungled response to the campus unrest that spread across higher education institutions nationwide last year. Earlier this month, Garber hinted at the coming downturn in donations, telling the university's student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, that the year's commitments were "disappointing" compared to prior years.
