Grammys add Best African Music Performance category
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Next year’s Grammys will feature three new categories, including Best African Music Performance, as the awards move to reflect the massive popularity of Afrobeats around the world. The category “recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent,” the organizers said in a statement published Wednesday. Throughout the year, the Recording Academy – the group of music industry professionals that presents the Grammy Awards – accepts proposals from its members for new categories. Those proposals are then reviewed by a committee and voted on by the academy’s board of trustees. At a meeting in May, the trustees voted to introduce the Best African Music Performance category, as well as awards for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording, the statement said.

Private equity risks gorging on its secret sauce
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Investors prefer pedestrian but steady management fees over the lumpy share of fund profit that is the industry’s special sauce. Private equity firms with a public listing funnel some of the carry to employees and some to shareholders. TPG (TPG.O) last year went public with a similar strategy of paying around two-thirds of performance-related revenue to employees. Assuming the general idea is to keep overall earnings steady, then higher fee-based income for shareholders must be matched by lower cash compensation for employees. It suggests that for KKR, TPG and the rest, there is a limit to just how much of their own secret sauce employees can eat.

Talking about queer persecution in the past gave activists a language with which to combat queer persecution in the present. But the relentless focus on queer persecution — while politically necessary — often has the unfortunate effect of shunting to the side an equally important history of queer joy. In my own research on sexuality in modern Germany, queer joy also appears in the unlikeliest of places. Reports from the Gestapo, the Nazis’ feared secret police, chronicled monthly fetes attended by hundreds of Berliners: queer women and trans men sporting elegant evening coats, queer men and trans women dressed to the nines in flowing gowns. Understanding how and why trans, queer, gay, bi and lesbian people were and are persecuted is vital to recognizing and combating oppression of all sorts today.

Harvey Averne begins most days with a bialy and whitefish salad. He watches “Morning Joe,” plays with his cat, Coco Baby, and fields calls from Latin music legends like Joe Bataan at his eclectic but tidy Woodhaven, Queens apartment. Averne is one of the last of the Latin music giants: a Jewish kid from East New York who had a hand in the development of Latin music, from the borscht belt to boogaloo and salsa. “I didn’t understand a word they’re saying, but that’s OK — you don’t understand a word in the opera.”As a producer, manager and musician, Averne has a storied history behind the scenes at some of New York’s biggest Latin music labels. At his own Coco Records, which released Latin jazz and salsa, Averne’s work with the pianist Eddie Palmieri earned the first two Grammy Awards for Latin music.

Illumina shares closed at $200.53 on the Nasdaq on Friday. Icahn has said he wants former Illumina CEO Jay Flatley to return.

Some 75 of the world's largest 112 fossil fuel companies have now committed to reaching net-zero - the point at which greenhouse gas emissions are negated by deep cuts in output elsewhere and methods to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide. But most targets do not fully cover or lack transparency on Scope 3 emissions — which include the use of a company's products, the biggest source of emissions for fossil fuel companies — or don't include short-term reduction plans, the report added. The report also found that none of the fossil fuel companies were making the needed commitments to move away from fossil fuel extraction or production. As it stands, some 4,000 countries, states, regions, cities and companies globally have now committed to net-zero. A study published last week in the journal Science found that about 90% of countries' net-zero targets were unlikely to be achieved.

GDANSK, June 11 (Reuters) - Poland's biggest video game producer CD Projekt (CDR.WA) will release a highly-anticipated expansion to its flagship game Cyberpunk 2077 called "Phantom Liberty" on Sept. 26, the company announced during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. The release will be CD Projekt's first major premiere since the bug-ridden launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020. The trailer for the upcoming expansion was announced by Keanu Reeves, who will be back in the role of Johnny Silverhand. The expansion is the last project to be developed on CD Projekt's own technology RED Engine, with the company switching to external Unreal Engine for its upcoming developments. In September CD Projekt announced it had sold 20 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - The World Bank must use "informed risk-taking" to encourage private investors to get more engaged in helping developing countries deal with climate change and leapfrog fossil-fuel energy sources, its new president Ajay Banga said on Sunday. Private sector capital was critical since funds from governments, philanthrophy, the World Bank and other multilateral development banks (MDBs) would never suffice to help poor countries adapt to and mitigate climate change, said Banga, a former Mastercard CEO who took office on June 2. Private companies were bound to deliver returns for shareholders and could not take on the risks involved, but the bank could help, he said. The Indian-born executive was nominated by the U.S. for the job precisely because of his previous work in the private sector, and he has pledged to identify barriers for greater investment and find ways to maximize the bank's impact. Banga told CNN he would also work closely with other multilateral lenders and development organizations, noting that he would be joined in his visits this week by Inter-American Development Bank President Ilan Golfajn.

"During the past day, the armed forces of Ukraine continued unsuccessful attempts of offensive actions in the Donetsk, southern Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia directions," it said. Russian military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had smashed through a section of the Russian lines south of the town of Velyka Novosilka, briefly taking several villages as Russian forces retreated to higher ground. Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-installed official in the part of the Zaporizhzhia region controlled by Russia, said Russian forces had then taken the village back. Ukraine has said it made gains near Bakhmut, which fell to Russia last month. A strange year: Halfway through, there is a wide difference of opinion on earnings Strategists analyze the macroeconomy to come up with an estimate for corporate earnings. They analyze individual company performance to come up with earnings estimates, which are then aggregated into an overall estimate by agencies like FactSet or Refinitiv. The S & P 500 reported $218 in earnings in 2022, according to Refinitiv. This highlights the difference between analysts and strategists: Analysts have models for earnings of individual companies, not the macroeconomy as strategists do. However, in this case, their reticence to slash earnings estimates in expectation of an imminent recession or a banking crisis has proved to be correct.

LUCKY DOGS, by Helen SchulmanThat Harvey Weinstein hired a private international spy agency called Black Cube to help squash stories about his sex crimes always seemed stranger than fiction. In an author’s note, Helen Schulman states explicitly that her seventh novel, “Lucky Dogs,” was inspired by two players in this globe-spanning chapter of the Weinstein saga. “How could one woman do this to another woman?” Schulman had wondered, reading ragefully about the case. The question might sound naïve: Has she not seen the foundational Hollywood text “All About Eve”? But her imagined answer, in the form of this book, is deeply knowing, properly indignant and — maybe the best revenge — very funny.
