Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady, has entered hospice care at her home in Georgia alongside her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who has been in hospice since February, the family announced on Friday. Mrs. Carter, 96, revealed in May that she has dementia, but Friday’s statement offered no further details about her condition or any other ailments she might be suffering. “She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family,” the Carter Center said in a statement on behalf of Jason Carter, the center’s chairman and a grandson of the former first couple. It is meant for patients not expected to live more than six months, although Mr. Carter’s experience defying that timetable has demonstrated that the duration of hospice care can vary. Mr. Carter turned 99 last month and is the longest-living president in American history.

In taking the stakes, Hancock has underscored its expertise in building mining projects, while Mineral Resources has said it wants to be part of projects that will sustain its growth for decades. As well as Liontown, Core Lithium (CXO.AX), Leo Lithium (LLL.AX) Latin Resources (LRS.AX) Patriot Metals , Chalice (CHN.AX), Centaurus (CTM.AX) and Rex Minerals (RXM.AX) have all been cited by brokers as buyout prospects. TWO-PRONGED SOLUTIONTheir deep pockets, risk appetite and Australia's competition laws means mining magnates have a home advantage against listed companies, industry sources say. Russia has a weapons system that uses a drone's laser to identify targets. Russia will likely try to improve the system in what could be a winter fighting boost, it added. AdvertisementAdvertisementRussian drones that use laser beams to identify targets in Ukraine are being frustrated by low clouds, according to British intelligence. The UK Ministry of Defence's intelligence update on Tuesday assessed the performance of drones that use lasers to spot targets for Russia's 152mm Krasnopol-M2 artillery munitions. Russia will likely try to improve the system by boosting "Krasnopol's flight performance and reduce the round's laser detection time," the UK update said.

Even as Home Depot forecast sales declines, the retailer had good news for investors and consumers on Tuesday. Home Depot kicked off a much-anticipated week of retail earnings that includes other household names, such as Walmart , Target and Macy's . In the short term, cooling inflation reduces sales numbers for retailers, including Home Depot. At Home Depot, McPhail has described 2023 as "a year of moderation" after the boom in home improvement during the Covid pandemic. Yet some factors that drive inflation are beyond retailers' control and influence consumers' decisions, too.

Experts say Trudeau's carbon pricing scheme, known as the carbon tax, works well and cannot be easily replaced. Even the left-leaning New Democrats, who support Trudeau's government in parliament and have previously defended the carbon tax, are calling for the exemption. Analysts said the carbon tax carve-out is another example of inconsistent policy. CARBON TAX REBATEThe carbon tax is intended to discourage use of fossil fuels and accelerate a switch to clean energy, but the recent carve-out underlines how fragile climate policy is in the face of pressing political calculations. In September, Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem said the carbon tax contributes about 0.15 percentage points to the inflation rate, which was 3.8% that month.

Word "Oil" and stock graph are seen through magnifier displayed in this illustration taken September 4, 2022. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said last week crude oil production in the United States this year will rise by slightly less than previously expected while demand will fall. That is "not a prospect that crude oil will welcome given that recent data in China and the U.S. has brought growth fears back to the surface," he said. Weak economic data last week from China, the world's biggest crude oil importer, increased fears of faltering demand. Additionally, refiners in China asked for less supply from Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter, for December.

The arrival of frigid temperatures and heavy snow in recent days has contributed to a spate of deaths of homeless people in Anchorage, Alaska, adding to a toll that had already left political leaders scrambling for new solutions. One woman died when fire consumed her makeshift shelter in the woods. A running tally of homeless deaths kept by the city’s largest newspaper, The Anchorage Daily News, is now up to 49 — more than double last year’s toll. “It is fairly depressing, just unimaginable, the number of deaths we have been having,” said Felix Rivera, a member of the Anchorage Assembly who leads the Housing and Homelessness Committee. The harsh winters in Alaska have long brought dangers for those sleeping outside.
