U.S. crude oil topped $77 per barrel on Monday, rising for the fifth day as the Pentagon dispatched more forces to the Middle East in anticipation of an Iranian attack on Israel. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered a carrier strike group, including F-35 warplanes, to accelerate its deployment to the region. Austin also ordered a guided-missile submarine to the Middle East. Here are Monday's energy prices:Israel has been preparing for strikes by Iran and the Hezbollah militia for nearly two weeks, after the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran. U.S. crude oil is trading higher even as OPEC lowered its global demand growth forecast by 135,000 barrels per day, citing softening consumption in China.

The message to the airline industry: You've had a few too many screwups to be left to your own devices. Over the past couple of years, the Biden administration has introduced a slew of rules and services intended to make airline passengers' lives easier. The airline industry seems to be relatively on board with the refund idea. But there are plenty of other problems with the airline industry that need solving — some the government can take care of, and some the government is causing. Gallup polls suggest more Americans have a negative view of the airline industry than a positive one.

PARIS — Two-time WNBA champion A'ja Wilson scored 21 points as the United States survived an unexpectedly close contest from host France, winning 67-66 for their eighth straight Olympic gold medal in women's basketball on Sunday. The U.S. women last lost in Olympic play when they failed to bring home gold in 1992. But after France drew a foul and Cooper made both free throws, a last-minute shot by Williams was not enough. "The dynasty we've built here at USA Basketball has been incredible," Wilson said in a postgame interview. PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking.

Norah O’Donnell recently announced that she will be stepping down as anchor of “CBS Evening News” after the election, after five years at the helm. I knew viewers were seeing these stories because Norah was the driving force behind telling them. Like so many watching, I marveled at the incredible athleticism of these young women, as well as at their diversity. Equally exciting was the fact that this was the first Olympics in history where there were as many women as men competing. We’re also in the midst of a campaign that could result in the election of the first woman president, and first woman of color as president.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced last month Samoski was accounted for, according to a news release from the agency. American Graves Registration Command, which tracked down fallen American personnel, disinterred all American remains from the cemetery after the war, according to the agency. The remains of more than 80 unknowns who could not be identified were recovered and interred at two cemeteries in Belgium. Those remains were then sent from Belgium to an agency laboratory to be examined and identified, the agency said.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

How to increase your attention span amid digital overload

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

The only certainty about Summer Olympics weather is that there’s really no certainty at all. In other words, holding the Summer Games in these cities would be a huge health risk for the athletes. The Games held in 1996 in Atlanta simply wouldn’t be possible in 2050. They may not againSome of the cities that have already hosted the Summer Games will be way beyond safe temperatures by 2050. Beijing, which hosted in 2008, would be much too hot and humid, with heat stress forecast to soar past 90 degrees.

Colleen Hoover’s book “It Ends With Us” has been a fixture on the best-seller list for years. And now, the movie adaptation has become a smash at the box office. The $25 million film from Sony Pictures is on track to earn at least $45 million in the United States and Canada, box office analysts say. Starring Blake Lively, the romance is based on Ms. Hoover’s most popular book — one that was initially released in 2016 but reappeared on the best-seller list in the midst of the pandemic in 2021 and has since spent some 140 weeks there.
