A deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald 's Quarter Pounders has led to 75 cases in 13 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, as it investigates the source of the spread. All of the 42 people who were interviewed by the CDC reported eating at McDonald's, while 39 people reported eating a beef hamburger, the agency said. Quarter Pounder hamburgers are a core menu item for McDonald's, raking in billions of dollars annually. With massive corporations including Alphabet , Meta , Apple , Microsoft and Amazon set to report earnings next week, CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday urged investors to keep a level head. "Just please remember, the first move's been the wrong move almost half the time since this earnings season began. Monday starts off the week with earnings from Ford . Tuesday brings McDonald's earnings report, and Cramer said to expect "a full airing of the e-coli situation," but that it is too early to tell how much damage it will do to the fast food chain. The monster week for earnings will continue into Thursday, as both Apple and Amazon will report after the bell.

The rise of online betting has led the commercial gambling industry to balloon worldwide, posing a significant threat to public health, according to a new report. The report, published Thursday, comes from a public health commission on gambling convened by the medical journal The Lancet. The report highlighted the role online gambling has played in the rising availability of commercial gambling as a whole. Belgium, the Netherlands and Ontario, for example, have varying restrictions on gambling advertising, including online gambling. A 2015 paper found that online gambling could lead to the emergence or aggravation of gambling problems.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation, is seeking communications between the administration and social media companies, like Facebook-owner Meta. “The Biden-Harris Administration has advertised its willingness to manipulate the content of social media sites,” Mace wrote, pointing to the administration’s 2021 admission that it worked with social media companies to flag misinformation on their platforms, including related to Covid-19. “The White House has not apologized for this activity or indicated that it would cease and desist from engaging in such behavior," Mace continued. Conservatives have accused the White House of pressuring companies like Meta and Twitter to take down content that didn’t serve the administration politically. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
