Tech executives including Mark Zuckerberg and PayPal's Dan Schulman have taken up martial arts. Zuckerberg is now sizing up Elon Musk as his latest opponent, as the pair agreed to go head-to-head in a cagefight. Danny Zelig trains PayPal CEO Dan Schulman in Krav Maga, which was developed by the Israeli army. Zelig said that in sparring sessions, Schulman would often wait to for him to strike, which let Zelig dictate the fight. She added that the training helped her to focus on the present and develop distance from her work in her "own version of mindfulness."

To revitalize the area, the city has approved three projects to turn vacant commercial space into affordable housing. While some residents are skeptical, the LaSalle Reimagined Initiative is just one of many creative solutions urban planners are raising to fill the space. Chicago's downtown office space posted a 22.4% vacancy rate in the first quarter of 2023, which poses the question: What does the city do with all that vacant commercial office space? The LaSalle Reimagined Initiative: A new housing developmentThree adaptive reuse proposals were selected for the LaSalle Reimagined Initiative, Chicago's ambitious plan to repurpose a portion of LaSalle Street's 5 million square feet of vacant commercial space into mixed-income housing. US appeals court vacates travel mask mandate ruling
  + stars: | 2023-06-22 | by ( David Shepardson | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court panel Thursday vacated an April 2022 ruling that had declared unlawful a government order requiring masks on airplanes and other transportation modes during the COVID-19 pandemic. "There is not a grain of evidence that the CDC has any plans to promulgate an identical mandate," the court ruled. In April 2022, a U.S. district judge ruled the CDC lacked legal authority to issue a nationwide travel mask mandate. The plaintiffs who sued to overturn the mask mandate had urged the court not to dismiss the case. A report from U.S. lawmakers in October said the Trump administration in 2020 blocked the CDC from adopting a federal transportation mask mandate.

New York CNN —Taylor Swift, public transit savior? Public transit systems across the United States are getting a much-needed, if temporary, boost from Taylor Swift fans flooding trains, buses and subways to her sold-out Eras Tour. As transit agencies scramble to recover from the pandemic, transit experts say all those Swifies taking mass transit offer lessons for policymakers on how to adapt to the post-pandemic world. Philadelphia’s SEPTA system and New Jersey Transit also got a boost from concertgoers taking mass transit to Swift shows. But public transit agencies still have yet to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic.

That sparked a comment from Musk that suggested he is up for a fight with the Zuckerberg. The Verge tech publication confirmed that Zuckerberg is "serious about fighting Elon Musk and is now waiting on the details" if Musk decides to follow through.

DOHA, June 20 (Reuters) - Qatar is set to secure its second large gas supply deal with a Chinese state-controlled company in less than a year, sources familiar with the deal told Reuters on Tuesday. CNPC also will take an equity stake in the eastern expansion of Qatar's North Field liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, the sources said. In an identical deal, QatarEnergy sealed a 27-year supply agreement with China's Sinopec in November for 4 million tons a year. The state-owned Chinese gas giant also took an equity stake equivalent to 5% of one LNG train of 8 million tons a year capacity. Tuesday's deal, first reported by the Financial Times, will be QatarEnergy's third deal to supply LNG from the expansion to an Asian buyer.

Rush hour is now anything but at the Montgomery Street station in the heart of San Francisco. Three years after the pandemic began, remote work endures as a way of life for many office workers, and few major transit systems in the United States have suffered worse than Bay Area Rapid Transit. The 131-mile network depends heavily on suburban residents who commute daily into San Francisco and less than other transit systems on local passengers trying to get across town. Weekday ridership on BART is down to 32 percent of what it was before the pandemic began, punctuating a desperate moment for San Francisco. Without daily foot traffic, major retailers are abandoning downtown, and analysts believe the city core has yet to bottom out.

Kaneko is among countless Japanese women who say their experiences of sexual assault and abuse were ignored because they “didn’t fit the criteria” of a victim. The mayor of Paris is forming a committee to look into the cohabitation of the city's citizens with its notorious population of rats. They underscore how intelligence gathering – an activity meant to go on without detection, out of the public eye – is becoming an increasingly prominent flashpoint in the US-China relationship. That pushes intelligence gathering itself to become “another factor that is complicating US-China relations,” he said. That’s especially the case, experts say, as China continues to expand its own intelligence gathering capabilities – catching up in an area where the US has traditionally had an edge. Other arms of the Communist Party apparatus also play a role in activities beyond conventional intelligence gathering, experts say. Heightened concern and awareness about Chinese intelligence gathering – or the potential for it – has exploded in the US in recent years.
