Jule Hamrick spent years in physical therapy to learn how to walk again after a West Nile Virus infection. “So kind of like what you see with long Covid, we’ve seen that with West Nile as well, where you can get this ‘long West Nile’ kind of picture.”Watching West Nile patients struggle to recover from their infections made Murray wonder what would become of survivors over time. Brittany Yeager recently returned to the Girl Scout Camp in Idaho where she caught the West Nile virus. She went to two hospitals before a doctor tested her spinal fluid and discovered that she had West Nile virus. The CDC keeps maps of where West Nile cases have been detected in the United States.

Third-party food delivery is becoming the norm for American consumers, as delivery apps like Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats take hold in day-to-day dining. It's also presenting customers and restaurants with an increasingly complicated equation of service fees, delivery costs and worker tips. San Francisco resident Zainab Batool, who said she orders delivery from either Uber Eats or DoorDash weekly, called the added fees "insane." The share of consumers choosing third-party delivery services over direct restaurant delivery is rising, up from 15% in 2020 to 21% in 2024, according to Technomic's 2024 Delivery & Takeout Consumer Trend Report. But using their delivery services instead of paying for in-house delivery is worth it for a business on the smaller side, he said.

Nearly everyone falls victim to "self-handicapping bias," or the psychological tendency to under-prepare or undersell yourself during new opportunities, says workplace performance coach Henna Pryor. "When we self-handicap, we essentially protect ourselves from the consequences of our own failure," Pryor tells CNBC Make It. Self-handicapping can can look like putting off prep for a big meeting or starting a presentation with "I'm bad at public speaking." Even high-performing employees self-handicap, Pryor says, and it's often driven by a fear of failure. Luckily, there are ways to stop self-handicapping, Pryor says.

Small caps should also get a boost from interest rate cuts, which typically translate to disproportionately large gains for the group. That helps confirm what investors are realizing: small caps are the place to be. When large caps sneeze, the market catches a coldThe small-cap breakout has coincided with large technology stocks breaking down. Small caps also tend to have less of an international presence than their larger peers, so they don't miss out as much when converting overseas profits to dollars. The small-cap index is closely tied to economically sensitive parts of the market, which should continue to participate in this rally.

An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

The stock market is gearing up for its rate cut era

Data Thursday showed the economy expanded at a robust 2.8% annualized rate during the second quarter, blowing past economists’ expectations. While the Fed has penciled in just one rate cut for this year, traders are betting on up to three, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. While the market was broadly higher on Friday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq on Wednesday logged their worst daily performances since 2022. Shares of smaller companies tend to perform poorly when rates are high, since they have more floating rate debt than their larger counterparts. Investors are also picking at other areas of the market poised to gain when rates come down.

Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood.
