You think and think and think, and you still can't believe that things changed so radically in such a short period of time. So, let's pull apart Apple, Amazon, Meta and Alphabet to try to understand how unimportant what actually happened at these companies might be. Instead, Apple stock has climbed roughly 5% since it reported quarterly results on Nov. 2. Meta stock fell to $288 a share, down from $314, in a couple of sessions just because of that line in its earnings report. But like Apple and Amazon, Meta stock stabilized and has risen more than 14% since late October.

The electronic voting system the state uses, which was purchased from Dominion Voting Systems in 2019 and implemented statewide in 2020, has been the subject of outlandish conspiracy theories. When it was initially filed in 2017, it targeted the paperless touchscreen voting machines that Georgia had been using for 15 years. It was then amended to challenge the election system the state bought in 2019, with claims that the new system has similar vulnerabilities. At the upcoming trial, the plaintiffs have “a heavy burden to establish a constitutional violation” connected to the voting system, she wrote. “We look forward to presenting our full evidence at trial and obtaining critical relief for Georgia voters,” said David Cross, an attorney for some of the individual voters.

AdvertisementAdvertisementArgentina is getting ready to choose its next president — and the country's economy is a mess. Triple-digit inflationSoaring prices are perhaps the best-known problem plaguing Argentina's economy, but far from the only issue that policymakers are battling. The currency is managed by Argentina's central bank. If, or more likely when, Argentina's economy slips into another recession, it'll be the sixth such occurrence in the past decade. His proposed policies include abolishing Argentina's central bank altogether and adopting the dollar, which economists have warned could end up pushing the country even closer to a default.

What’s Wrong With Peer Review?
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Nidhi Subbaraman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The latest in a series of high-profile retractions of research papers has people asking: What’s wrong with peer review? Scientific and medical journals use the peer-review process to decide which studies are worthy of publication. But a string of questionable or allegedly fabricated research has made it into print. The problems were exposed only when outside researchers scrutinized the work and performed a job that many believe is the responsibility of the journals: They checked the data.

Prepare for volatility and chaos in 2024Kupperman's confidence in his hedge fund is inversely related to his outlook for the economy. "Recent geopolitical events, along with the collapse of bonds in many developed markets, seem likely to lead to an increase in overall market volatility," Kupperman wrote in his letter. If he's right about inflation, his hedge fund would be well-positioned to beat the market for a fifth consecutive year in 2024. "I do the same thing always, which is you buy cheap companies with really strong tailwinds and you hold 'em through the volatility," Kupperman said. The U.K. economy flatlined in the third quarter, initial figures showed Friday. Services sector output dropped 0.1% on the quarter, but the decline was offset by a 0.1% increase in construction performance, while the production sector flatlined. U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said high inflation remains the "single greatest barrier to economic growth" in the country, with the consumer price index remaining at 6.7% year-on-year in September. While somehow avoiding a recession this year, today's no growth reading means the UK economy is flatlining with only 0.2% economic growth in the last six months." As the Bank of England stated earlier this month that more than half of the impact of higher interest rates on the level of GDP is still to come through, the U.K. economy faces growing headwinds as we approach 2024."

USDA pegged U.S. corn yield at 174.9 bushels per acre, up from 173 last month and above nearly all estimates, which on average predicted a slight increase. It was the most bearish corn yield in a November report since 2017. That could negatively impact Brazil’s second corn production, as was the case after the 2015-16 El Nino, rerouting corn demand to the United States. USDA left Brazil’s 2023-24 soy crop unchanged at 163 million metric tons this month, but it raised the prior crop by 2 million tons to 158 million, suggesting exports are outperforming prior crop expectations. However, USDA has flashed 2.85 million tons (105 million bushels) of U.S. soybean sales so far this week, mostly to China and unknown destinations.

London CNN —After more than half a century, the identity of the elderly, stick-carrying man featured on the “Led Zeppelin IV” album cover has finally been revealed. The “Stick Man” who featured on the cover of English rock band Led Zeppelin’s 1971 fourth studio album was a thatcher from the late-Victorian era, the Wiltshire Museum in southwestern England said in a statement Wednesday. Led Zeppelin members (left - right) John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant pose in front of their private airliner The Starship in 1973. This colored version was the only feature on the “Led Zeppelin IV” album cover, which, unusually, had no words on it, not even the band’s name. “It is fascinating to see how this theme of rural and urban contrasts was developed by Led Zeppelin and became the focus for this iconic album cover 70 years later,” the museum’s director, David Dawson, said in the statement.

The case of IrvineWhen the city of Irvine took on short-term rentals in 2018, Airbnb seemed unstoppable. Its tentacles had spread to cities across the globe, converting entire neighborhood blocks, in the most dramatic cases, to short-term rentals. Plenty of cities had passed ordinances banning short-term rentals, only to see Airbnb listings continue to pop up. That's consistent with data on short-term rentals in Irvine, which showed that by January 2021, the number of listings in Irvine had halved. As the Berlin and Boston studies found, when houses or apartments are pulled off the long-term market to be used as short-term rentals, housing supply decreases.

The race to build AI as smart as humans, or AGI, looks like it suffered a major blow. Google researchers found the transformer technology behind AI isn't very good at generalizing. As it stands, AI is pretty good at specific tasks but less great at transferring skills across domains like humans do. Just 29% of respondents last year said they were expecting to increase their media budgets in 2023. Of the remaining 40% of those surveyed, roughly one-third (33%) said they intended to maintain their 2023 budgets into 2024. Meanwhile, print, linear TV, and radio were all likely to decline in their share of most marketers' budgets in 2024, according to the report. The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and the Bank of England dramatically hiked rates over the last 18 months in a bid to tame runaway inflation. Reid also highlighted that this is the seventh time this cycle that markets have notably reacted on dovish speculation. "Clearly rates aren't going to keep going up forever, but on the previous 6 occasions we saw hopes for near-term rate cuts dashed every time. In clear, waiting for inflation to reach 2% before cutting rates would be 'overkill,'" Moëc said. However, minutes from last week's meeting reiterated the Monetary Policy Committee's expectations that rates will need to stay higher for longer, with U.K. CPI holding steady at 6.7% in September.
