All four drugs are in a class of wildly popular weight loss drugs known as GLP-1s. In the United Kingdom, authorities last year seized hundreds of counterfeit Ozempic pens — insulin pens that had been relabeled as Ozempic. Counterfeit weight loss drugs have serious health risks, according to the pharmaceutical companies and federal officials. Counterfeiters are already trying to cash in on a weight loss drug that the company hasn't even put on the market yet: retatrutide. But it's also one of the epicenters of the lucrative counterfeit drug trade, according to U.S. authorities who track counterfeit drugs.

A growing number of employers are considering covering the blockbuster weight-loss drugs, several surveys show. Roughly the same share say they are somewhat or very likely to begin covering these medications for weight loss within the next 12 months, according to KFF’s annual Employer Health Benefits Survey. But only 18% of firms in KFF’s survey, which includes those with 200 or more employees, cover GLP-1 drugs primarily for weight loss. Even employers that provide coverage for anti-obesity drugs often put up guardrails, such as requiring employees to receive prior authorization or to try other weight-loss methods first. Outpatient drug costs are expected to climb 11.4% next year, surpassing the 8% increase projected for medical plan costs, according to Segal’s most recent survey.

CNN —Covid-19 could be a powerful risk factor for heart attacks and strokes for as long as three years after an infection, a large new study suggests. What’s more, for people who needed to be hospitalized, Covid appeared to be as potent a risk factor for future heart attacks and strokes as diabetes or peripheral artery disease, or PAD. A finding unique to Covid-19The elevated heart risks from infection did not appear to diminish over time, the study found. People who were hospitalized for Covid but who were also taking low-dose aspirin had no increase in the likelihood of a subsequent heart attack or stroke. “If you’ve had Covid, we have to be especially attentive to making sure that we’re doing everything possible to lower your cardiovascular risk,” Hazen said.

Viewers tuning into NFL and college football games in recent weeks have been bombarded with two Trump ads — running nationally and locally in swing states — that take issue with Vice President Kamala Harris’ past support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming treatments. “So we’ll talk about it for them.”The Harris campaign declined to comment on the record. The two trans ads are Trump’s two most-seen commercials during professional and college football games, according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political commercials and ad spending. Trump campaign officials say the ads will make it harder for Harris to make up ground with men, where polls show her trailing Trump. A Trump campaign official said the campaign's internal polling showed the ad was resonating with Black men — a demographic the campaign is courting.

Winnie Greco, director of the city’s Asian Affairs, resigned to her post on Monday after more than a decade working closely with Adams as a liaison between him, in his different capacities, and the Asian American community. Her resignation comes after Greco and several other Adams aides were raided by the FBI earlier this year. In her new memoir, Melania Trump says she backs abortion rights but leaves some gray area as to whether she supports restrictions. "There are several legitimate reasons for a woman to choose to have an abortion. For instance, if her life is at risk, rape, a congenital birth defect, plus severe medical conditions," Melania Trump wrote. The presidential campaign of her husband, former President Donald Trump, directed questions to Melania Trump aide Madison Porter, who did not return a request seeking comment. In interviews about her book, Melania Trump said that her husband was aware of her position early in their relationship.

As state lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills targeting transgender people, particularly youths, over the last few years, Americans have rarely been able to hear from those most directly affected — trans youths themselves. They wanted to ensure the group was diverse because the trans kids and their families who are often featured in national reporting have been predominantly white. “American Teenager,” which debuts Tuesday, also features religious diversity, challenging the common misconception that being trans conflicts with people’s religious faith, Lang said. For example, Ruby Carnes, who was 19 when Lang spent two weeks with her in Houston, attends an Episcopalian church with her family who identify as Evangelical Christians, Lang said. Some of the young people Lang spent time with describe how gender-affirming medical care has affected their lives.

A 74-year-old Colorado man was injured in his home by a black bear after the animal and its three cubs opened a partially cracked sliding glass door, authorities said. The attack Thursday in Lake City was the first bear attack in the state this year, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The man who was injured responded by grabbing a chair and trying to direct the bear out the door, officials said. The sow and her cubs were euthanized after confirmation of their involvement in the attack, officials said. Last year, six bear attacks were reported across Colorado, according to Parks and Wildlife.

AdvertisementLike Woodman, millions of Americans travel abroad for medical procedures each year, saving anywhere from 40% to 90% on the services they receive. Medical tourism comes with risks; the American Medical Association recommends going only to medical facilities recognized by international accrediting bodies and following up testing with care at home. It's unclear, though, how many medical tourists visit accredited facilities, and there's still the question of whether all these tests are useful for someone who is seemingly in good health. Related storiesSince COVID-19 came into the picture, health screenings and extensive physicals have received some buzz. As more people spend time abroad, it becomes easier to tack a few small medical tests onto your trip.

CNN —Neuroscientist Chris Nowinski has said he wants the NFL to investigate the apparent head injury suffered by Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen during Sunday’s defeat to the Houston Texans. Allen’s head struck the turf in the fourth quarter after being tackled and lay motionless before being rolled over by his teammates. The QB came off the field and was directed to the sideline medical tent, where doctors assess players’ injuries. After emerging from the blue tent, Allen appeared to be offered smelling salts, which make players feel more alert before going onto the field. Allen said in his postgame press conference that he “felt good enough to go back into the game” after the incident.

There might be another listener in the room at your doctor's appointments now or in the near future: ambient AI. Ambient AI is a technology that records and automates transcripts of conversations in real time — like a scribe. Over 15,000 patient visits were conducted "using this type of ambient AI technology to augment the documentation," he says. Seliby Perkins is prepared for patients to either decline the use of ambient AI during their visits or have a lot of questions about how it works. Your injector doesn't have the right credentialsTreatments from unlicensed or unqualified injectors are always dangerous, whether you're getting Botox or "vampire facials," because they can neglect basic safety protocols. If you're getting filler, the office should be stocked with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down filler, in case you get a filler occlusion. You don't like your injector's styleIf your injector's own Botox and filler looks too dramatic to you, it's worth being cautious, according to Rabach.
