As soon as E. Jean Carroll heard the verdict on Friday — $83.3 million in defamation damages against Donald J. Trump — a world of possibility opened before her: How to use the money? The amount vastly eclipsed the $5 million awarded to her by a jury last spring in a different trial against Mr. Trump. It could take years before she sees the money, as Mr. Trump has said he will appeal, but she is already considering how she might use the money once she obtains it. “We’re going to do something good with it.”Figuring that out will take some time, she added. Ms. Carroll, appearing relaxed and happy in her lawyers’ offices on Saturday, spoke in her first interview since the Manhattan jury’s award in her favor a day earlier.

A federal jury ordered Donald Trump to pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million in damages on Friday. During the defamation trial, Trump and his attorney appeared to frequently frustrate the presiding judge. The jury deliberated for under three hours before delivering their verdict, which included $18.8 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages for Carroll. Juries tend to grow attached to their presiding trial judge, Jones said, adding that they often come to see the judge as a protector of sorts. The $83.3 million in damages are on top of $5 million in damages Carroll won during the May 2023 trial.

Will Trump keep that up, now that he's been hit with a $83.3 million defamation judgment? A jury on Friday found that Trump had maliciously damaged Carroll's reputation in 2019 after she went public with her accusations. If both judgments stand, Trump would owe her a total of $88.3 million. THE FIRST TRIALCarroll sued Trump for defamation in 2019, saying his statements about her were false and damaged her reputation. The $88.3 million in judgments against Trump are actually less than what some of his supporters have faced in recent defamation cases.

Former South Carolina Gov. The Biden campaign has long been preparing for Trump to win the nomination, but it is acutely aware of polling reflecting Haley’s strength over Biden in a one-on-one matchup. And behind closed doors, the Biden campaign is cheering Haley’s decision to stay in the race as they monitor Trump lashing out at the former South Carolina governor. It has been welcome news for the president’s reelection team to see Haley prolong the Republican contest and force the Trump campaign to use its resources and time to attack her. “Go forth and prosper,” one Biden campaign official said, describing the team’s delight in seeing the Trump-Haley feud continue.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former President Donald Trump lavished praise Saturday on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for not allowing the Biden administration entry to remove razor wire in a popular corridor for migrants illegally entering the U.S. in an escalating feud over immigration. In a speech focused overwhelmingly on border security, Trump said Texas should be given full support in its measures to deter migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border. Donald Trump testifies on January 25, in this courtroom sketch. Jane Rosenberg/ReutersDonald Trump returned to a Manhattan federal courthouse on Thursday where he took the stand for what was ultimately less than five minutes — including multiple admonishments from Judge Lewis Kaplan — as he seeks to avoid a multimillion-dollar jury verdict against him in the civil defamation trial. The trial centers on Trump’s 2019 comments about E. Jean Carroll, the writer who last year won a civil verdict over her claim Trump sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s and then defamed her when she first publicly accused him. Carroll is seeking at least $10 million. Closing arguments are scheduled for Friday morning and the jury of nine could have the case by lunchtime.

CNN —The $83.3 million verdict handed down in E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case against former President Donald Trump on Friday is far more than a judgment against Trump. In May, a Manhattan federal jury found Trump sexually abused Carroll in 1996. Legally, the award is an attempt to quantify the damages Trump wreaked on Carroll’s reputation, her sense of self and her life. I think most humans, including everyone on that jury, recognize that what Trump took from Carroll can’t be quantified. It just hurt.”But if Carroll’s story wasn’t easily slotted onto some universally understood, objective spectrum of sexual violence, that’s because there is no objective spectrum of sexual violence.

Read previewA federal jury has agreed Friday that Donald Trump must pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for defaming her. The unanimous jury verdict in Manhattan comes as Trump remains the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination for a likely rematch with President Joe Biden in November. "We're very happy," Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, told Business Insider soon after the verdict was read. Judge Kaplan forbade Trump or his attorneys from arguing that he didn't sexually assault Carroll. In his jury instructions, Judge Kaplan reminded the nine New Yorkers sitting there that they must accept Trump's sexual assault as an already-established fact.

A different jury last May concluded that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the spring of 1996 in the changing room of a luxury Manhattan department store. Carroll, 80, testified at last year's trial that she had a chance encounter with Trump at a Bergdorf Goodman store that was flirtatious and lighthearted until Trump cornered her in a changing room. Her claim that Trump raped her was rejected by last year's jury, though it agreed she was sexually abused. Last week, Carroll testified that her career was shattered by Trump's statements about her claims over the last five years, most recently on the campaign trail for president. The Associated Press typically does not name people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.

Nairobi, Kenya CNN —A judge in Kenya has barred the East African nation from deploying 1,000 police officers to Haiti to lead a UN-backed multinational force to restore security in the Caribbean nation. High Court judge Chacha Mwita ruled on Friday that President William Ruto and his National Security Council do not have the authority to send police officers to Haiti or any other country under Kenyan law. But Kenyan politician Ekuru Aukot led a legal challenge to the planned in deployment in court, terming it unconstitutional. “There’s no reciprocal arrangement between Kenya and Haiti and there can be no legitimate deployment of police officers to Haiti,” Judge Mwita said when he read his ruling in Nairobi. Gang violence rose by more than 100% in Haiti last year with over 8000 victims documented, according to UN data.

That verdict is still being appealed, and Trump within minutes of Friday’s verdict declared he will appeal this one as well. Carroll proved to jury she suffered harm from Trump’s defamatory statementsIt didn’t take the jury long to return a verdict against Trump, with deliberations lasting less than three hours. Trump’s attorney argued that Carroll would have received hateful messages when she wrote her story no matter what Trump said. “But President Trump should not have to pay for their threats. “You are on the verge of spending some time in the lock up, now sit down,” he said to Trump’s attorney.

Judge Kaplan said jurors should be identified only by number and even suggested they not share their actual names with one other. People were asked whether they had ever contributed money or supported a political campaign for Mr. Trump, Mr. Obama, Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden. “Have any of you ever read any books by Mr. Trump?” the judge asked. “Would that affect your ability to be fair to both sides in this case?” Judge Kaplan asked. “I want to stipulate that I am on the left,” Ms. Carroll remarked drolly.

Donald J. Trump might one day have to pay E. Jean Carroll the $83.3 million she was awarded, but that day is not today. Mr. Trump called the jury’s decision “Absolutely ridiculous!” and vowed to appeal the verdict, a process that could take months or more. And while he is waiting for an appellate court to rule, Mr. Trump need not cut Ms. Carroll a check. Mr. Trump can pay the $83.3 million to the court, which will hold the money while the appeal is pending. This is what he did last year when a jury ordered him to pay Ms. Carroll $5.5 million in a related case.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump departs for his second civil trial after E. Jean Carroll accused Trump of raping her decades ago, outside a Trump Tower in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., January 26, 2024. "The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom," said Judge Lewis Kaplan. Trump's comments have sparked death threats and vicious emails and tweets directed at Carroll, the lawyer said. "You are not going to use a slide to represent how many tweets there were, you are not using that slide, period," Judge Kaplan said. Carroll's lawyers have complained during the trial about Trump making comments that were audible to jurors while sitting with his attorneys at the defense table.

"My advice to you is that you never disclose that you were on this jury, and I won't say anything more about it," Kaplan said after the verdict was read. "And I won't say anything more about it." Kaplan repeatedly had to advise Trump and his lawyers to maintain proper behavior throughout the trial. The first trial also found that Trump defamed Carroll when he commented on her allegations while he was president. Jurors in this case were asked to find the damages for that statement and subsequent insults Trump has since made.

The defense’s questions were effectively pre-cleared by the judge, as Trump was not allowed to re-litigate the verdict from last year. Trump attorney Alina Habba first asked her client whether he stood by his testimony in a previous deposition denying Carroll’s allegations. Habba then asked, “Did you deny the allegation because Ms. Carroll made an accusation.”“That’s exactly right, yes I did.” Trump replied. Habba asked Martin whether she felt that Carroll enjoyed the attention that came with her lawsuits against Trump. A key part of that lofty aspiration was the drafting of a convention that codified and committed nations to prevent and punish a new crime, sometimes called the crime of crimes: genocide. Now, in response to Israel's devastating military offensive in Gaza that was triggered by murders and atrocities perpetrated by Hamas militants on Oct. 7, South Africa has gone to the International Court of Justice and accused Israel of genocide. The ICC prosecutes individuals and is separate to the International Court of Justice, which rules in disputes between nations. At public hearings earlier this month and in its detailed written submission to the ICJ, South Africa cited comments by Israeli officials that it claimed demonstrate intent. Both Gambia and South Africa have filed ICJ cases in conflicts they are not directly involved in.

A jury last year agreed that it happened and awarded Carroll $5 million in damages for sexual abuse and defamation. Trump denies ever knowing Carroll and says she made up her claims to sell a memoir. He did not testify at or attend last year's trial, a decision he now says he regrets. Thus, Kaplan has ruled, Trump will be barred from testifying about subjects that would conflict with last year's verdict. The current trial is in addition to four criminal cases Trump faces as the presidential primary season heats up.

As the color drained from the sky, a group gathered before the white-stoned basilica of St. Denis, where dozens of French kings are buried, to pay homage to their ancestors. Not to King Louis XIII, who formerly authorized the slave trade in 1642, or his son, the Sun King, who introduced slavery’s legal code, both of whose remains are buried inside the gothic building. They came for the victims, who are honored by a modest memorial outside. “This is Jean-Pierre Calodat,” said Josée Grard, 81, running her fingers along the name written on the globe-shaped sculpture as tambour drums echoed around her.
