"Welcome to the family, Mick," McLaren said on Twitter, pointing out also that new team principal Andrea Stella was previously performance engineer to Michael Schumacher at Ferrari. McLaren had a reserve-sharing agreement with Renault-owned Alpine last season, when Australian Piastri was Alpine's third driver. McLaren then won a contract dispute with Alpine for Piastri to race for them this year. Mercedes and Williams shared Nyck de Vries as reserve last season, with the Dutch driver now due to race with Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri. McLaren also have 2021 IndyCar champion Alex Palou contracted to a reserve role where the Spaniard's schedules allow.
Sam Bankman-Fried's parents lease the land for their home from Stanford, the LA Times reports. They'd put up the $4 million home as collateral for the former FTX CEO's $250 million bail release. Bail terms are about flight-risk rather than if collateral can cover the full amount, legal experts said. The revelation once again prompts questions about how and why courts set bail terms, which are meant to ensure that a defendant doesn't flee while awaiting trial. Prosecutors are now also arguing that Bankman-Fried's bail restrictions must go further, and impose limits on whom he communicates with and how.
The U.S. government hit its debt limit earlier this month, starting a countdown to when the Treasury Department will run out of resources . Goldman chief economist Jan Hatzius said in his "Weekly Kickstart" note that the looming debt ceiling fight this summer could have a significant impact on stocks. "Our economists expect the deadline to raise the debt limit will arrive between June and October. Market reactions to past debt limit episodes have been mixed. Hatzius' Goldman colleague Alec Phillips said in a follow-up note that, "we continue to believe the risk that Congress fails to raise the debt limit by the deadline is higher than at any point since 2011."
They have soared in popularity over the last year, in part from social media attention and billionaires like Elon Musk touting the drugs’ weight loss effects. Ozempic is not approved for weight loss, but doctors sometimes prescribe it off-label for that purpose. Harper took Ozempic off-label for weight loss from May until November (she paused while moving to Washington state but plans to start again). For Yazeed, weight loss was not the reason she went on Ozempic, nor was it a goal. He hasn't experienced side effects or weight loss from Ozempic, he said, but he recognizes that isn't true for everyone.

‘FDR’s Gambit’ Review: Playing the Numbers

The judiciary, Alexander Hamilton warned, “is in continual jeopardy of being overpowered, awed, or influenced by” the political branches of government. That year, President Franklin Roosevelt waged political war against a Supreme Court that had stifled his ambitious New Deal policies. FDR was at the height of his prewar authority, and the court’s counter-majoritarian decisions had put the institution in genuine peril. In “FDR’s Gambit: The Court Packing Fight and the Rise of Legal Liberalism,” she seeks to “challenge the conventional wisdom” about FDR’s attacks. She sees not presidential overreach but “shrewdness.” And Ms. Kalman’s account is thorough: From congressmen to administration officials to judges to columnists to pollsters to interest groups, “FDR’s Gambit” recounts seemingly everyone who supported, opposed or analyzed Roosevelt’s war on the court.

Jan 14 (Reuters) - An Indiana woman was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery for repeatedly stabbing in the head an 18-year-old student of Indiana University, an attack the university said was racially motivated. Last week's assault on a public transport bus and the suspect, 56-year-old Billie Davis, were reported to authorities by a witness on the bus, police have said. The victim told police she was waiting for the bus doors to open when another passenger began hitting her in the head, law enforcement officials said in a statement. Video from inside the bus showed the victim and her alleged attacker had no interaction before the stabbing. Local ABC affiliate WRTV said the suspect told police she stabbed the woman because it "would be one less person to blow up our country."

SEOUL, South Korea — Police in South Korea are seeking charges of involuntary manslaughter and negligence against 23 officials, including law enforcement officers, for a lack of safety measures they said were responsible for a crowd surge last year that killed nearly 160 people. Despite anticipating a Halloween weekend crowd of more than 100,000, Seoul police had assigned 137 officers to the capital’s nightlife district Itaewon on the day of the crush. Those officers were focused on monitoring narcotics use and violent crimes, which experts say left few resources for pedestrian safety. Son Je-han, who headed the National Police Agency’s special investigation into the incident, said Friday his team will now send the case to prosecutors. However, Son said the special investigation team will close its investigations of the Interior and Safety Ministry, the National Police Agency, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, saying it was difficult to establish their direct responsibility.
Vowles says Williams will not become a 'mini-Mercedes'

LONDON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Williams' new principal James Vowles said after his appointment on Friday that the struggling former champions would be no Mercedes 'B' team in Formula One. "There's no mini-Mercedes or B team or any of that," said Vowles. Vowles told reporters that Williams were entirely independent and he would act in their best interests. "There was always the speculation that Williams, because of the Mercedes engine, was a subordinate but none of that was obviously true." That’s why James is going to do what's good for the team, what's good for James in order to bring that forward.
VATICAN CITY, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Australian Cardinal George Pell was lying in state on Friday, with funeral preparations overshadowed by revelations that he was the author of an anonymous memo that branded Pope Francis' pontificate a catastrophe. Early on Friday, a reporter saw about 20 people kneeling in prayer in the church when it opened for 10 hours of lying in state. The small church, which is normally used for baptisms and weddings, is one of the oldest in the Vatican. Last year, respected Italian journalist Sandro Magister, who has a long track record of receiving leaked Vatican documents, published an anonymous memo circulating in the Vatican condemning Pope Francis' papacy as a "catastrophe". Pell will be buried in the crypt at St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, where he served as archbishop, the Australian Church has announced.
