A Deadly Summer for Hikers in the Southwest
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Jacey Fortin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For hikers in the American Southwest, this searing hot summer has been an exceptionally dangerous one. A woman never finished her trek along a remote trail last month in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Altogether, national and state parks have reported at least seven possible heat-related deaths so far this summer, as a brutal heat wave has baked the Southwest. Data on hiking fatalities is spotty, and officials caution that causes for the recent deaths have not been confirmed. But the deaths would appear to be the most for the months of June and July in at least a decade.

CNN —The wife of the Gilgo Beach serial killings suspect Rex Heuermann and her attorney told CNN she had “no idea” of her husband’s alleged actions and that the flood of public attention has been “extremely overwhelming” for the mother and her two children. He is also the prime suspect in the disappearance and killing of the fourth victim but has yet to be charged in that case. Authorities have said Ellerup and the children were out of town when the killings occurred. The spotlight on the family has attracted onlookers who show up at the home “just to get a glimpse of what’s going on at the house,” Macedonio said. Ellerup has been in touch with Heuermann since his arrest, the attorney said, though he did not provide further details.

Legal net tightens while Trump creates new echo of first impeachmentTrump’s legal struggles still dominate the Republican race. Despite Trump’s legal woes, no rival Republican has shown much sign of narrowing his double-digit lead in national primary polls. The PAC, Save America, has spent more than $40 million on legal fees since the start of this year, a source familiar with the matter told CNN, which is more than double the amount the group spent on legal fees in all of 2022. The details of the spending on legal fees by Trump’s PAC were first reported by the Washington Post. “I have good friends who did nothing wrong who had their legal fees paid by Save America PAC.

The Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids are predicted to peak on July 30 and 31. The Alpha Capricornids could produce dazzling fireballs, or extremely bright streaks in the sky. The best time to see the Delta Aquariid shower is around 2 a.m. when the meteor shower's radiant is at its highest. Meanwhile, the Alpha Capricornids, a less prominent source of meteors, could actually set the sky ablaze. On Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society, captured seven fireballs from the Alpha Capricornids meteor shower, according to EarthSky.

The strange, improbable rise of Mark Zuckerberg 3.0

In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse. CNN —Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh has married her longtime partner Jean Todt in a ceremony in Switzerland – nearly two decades after the French businessman first proposed to her. We love you and here’s to many more to come,” the Malaysian actress wrote. The post included images of the two exchanging rings and another of them sitting snuggled together on a bed decorated with flower petals. Todt posted the framed image on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over the weekend, thanking long-time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli for the “touching” wedding gift. Todt, who made his name as a World Rally Championship co-driver, is also a former president of Formula 1’s governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile.

Rome CNN —Ruins of a private theater belonging to the 1st century Roman Emperor Nero have been unearthed in the Italian capital just meters from the Vatican, in what experts are calling an “exceptional” find. Nero was the fifth Roman emperor, ruling between 54 and 68 AD. The site includes elegant marble columns, gold-leaf decorations and storage rooms with remnants of costumes and backdrops used in Nero’s theatrical productions. A double-faced Junus head, approximately dated to the 1st century A.D., is seen among other findings coming from the excavation of ancient Roman emperor Nero's theater. “Being able to dig in this built-up, historically rich area is so rare.”Archaeologists work on findings coming from the excavation site of the ancient Roman emperor Nero's theater.

CNN —A Niger general, Abdourahamane Tiani, appeared on state television as the country’s new leader following a military coup that sparked international condemnation. Tiani said in the broadcast that Wednesday’s coup was motivated by both the desire to “preserve our homeland” in a context of a “deteriorating security situation,” and poor economic and social governance. French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that the coup was “deeply dangerous for Niger and the whole region,” and called for Bazoum’s release. Read Your Way Through Maine
  + stars: | 2023-07-26 | by ( Lily King | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Maine is where you send a character you want to get rid of, someone who goes off to raise goats, farm oysters, prep for the apocalypse — or write a novel. I was in my mid-20s, waitressing on an island off the coast of Rockland, Maine, when the actor William Hurt — ultrafamous, at the height of his career — sat down in my section. Our shoreline is vast, over 3,000 miles of it, with hundreds of peninsulas and more than 4,000 islands. But Maine is not all coast.

LVMH’s smooth ride faces twin speed bumps

Shares in the 413 billion euro luxury behemoth fell 4% on Wednesday after it failed to wow investors with its earnings, depressing Europe’s stock market. Yet investors balked at the 1% second quarter sales contraction in the United States - which represents about a quarter of total revenue - as inflation worries cooled shoppers’ appetite for expensive items. LVMH’s conglomerate model, which spans over 70 brands, has so far proven resilient to crises. The all-important Mainland China market, which made up a fifth of global personal luxury sales in 2021, is a potential worry. Slow demand both in the U.S. and China would test LVMH’s diversified model.

SEOUL, July 25 (Reuters) - Tourists should expect far stricter supervision if visits to the border between North and South Korea resume, analysts said, after U.S. soldier Travis King used an organised tour to get close enough to dash across to North Korea last week. The U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC), which oversees the area, has indefinitely suspended all JSA tours after King's unauthorised crossing. Not all DMZ tours stop at the JSA, which is the only spot where visitors can step up to and even briefly over the border into the North. Visiting JSA is free of charge for South Korean nationals, but the tour King was on started at $180, according to a Tripadvisor listing. King's case would be the first successful border crossing by a JSA tourist ever, Zwetsloot said.

Biotech’s doldrums are a warning amid exuberance

The sector’s doldrums are a warning sign, despite the broader market shrugging off recession concerns. In 2000, the index peaked weeks before the S&P 500 Index (.SPX) and hit bottom three months earlier. In the 2009 financial crisis, the biotech index peaked later, but both emerged at about the same time. Yet biotech stocks have been lackluster since. Since January, the index is down 2%, while the S&P 500 Index is up 19% and the Nasdaq Composite Index is up 35%.

Thales cyber push meets investor shoulder shrug
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - France's Thales (TCFP.PA) is doubling down on cybersecurity with its $3.6 billion purchase of U.S. firm Imperva. Thales's boss Patrice Caine briefly considered buying Atos's (ATOS.PA) cybersecurity arm last year, but didn’t go through with it. The purchase values the Thoma Bravo-backed group at 17 times forecast 2024 operating profit, according to Thales. Meanwhile Caine’s push into the racy cyber sector doesn’t seem to register in the group’s valuation. That means investors are sceptical that Thales’s efforts to crack the war against hacking will work out for shareholders.

One bullish argument for Spotify’s stock is that higher prices will mean higher margins over time. First, some of Spotify’s customers pay annually, which means the price hike might take a while to come through. AMC Entertainment (AMC.N), the struggling movie theater chain wrestling with a meme-stock hangover, saw its busiest day since 2019 this past Saturday. The company needs cash to survive, and this weekend might add enough fantasy to help it. AMC has refiled to try again, and in some ways, Barbenheimer helps. The biggest risk to the movie theater business was that it would never return to pre-pandemic levels. AMC Entertainment, one of the U.S.’s largest theater chains, recorded over 7 million moviegoers in attendance over that weekend.

NEW YORK, July 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Piedmont Office Realty Trust (PDM.N) is sifting through the rubble. The $910 million owner of high-quality office buildings in Boston, Dallas and beyond just borrowed at 9.25%, more than twice the interest rate it’s replacing. It’s an ominous sign for U.S. office landlords facing $60 billion of debt maturing at the end of 2023 and 2024, per data miner RCA. Office prices have fallen so much that cap rates are approaching 10%, according to Jonathan Litt, founder of activist hedge fund Land and Buildings Investment Management. Pricier debt means less income, but if rents have stabilized and interest rates keep rising, Piedmont was wise to start reconstructing its balance sheet sooner rather than later.
