White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett addresses reporters during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington, U.S. February 22, 2018. President-elect Donald Trump picked Kevin Hassett to lead the National Economic Council, a role that puts him at the center of the administration's policy-making discussions from trade to taxes and deregulation. The move brings Trump closer to rounding out his economic team, with U.S. trade representative being the last of the key positions left. During Trump's first administration, Hassett served as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers for two years, supporting the Republican's corporate tax cuts and defending Trump's punitive tariffs. Hassett previously served as a scholar of fiscal policy at the conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank before Trump nominated him to the White House role in 2017.

Amgen on Tuesday said its experimental weight loss injection helped patients with obesity lose up to 20% of their weight on average after a year in a critical mid-stage trial, as the company races to join the booming obesity drug market. The drug, MariTide, also helped patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes lose up to 17% of their weight after a year. The company said it did not observe a plateau in either group of patients, which indicates the potential for further weight loss beyond 52 weeks. That could boost Amgen's odds of winning a slice of the weight loss drug market, which some analysts forecast could be worth $150 billion a year by the early 2030s. That's unlike Eli Lilly's obesity drug, Zepbound, which activates both GIP and GLP-1.

Boggs, founder and CEO of D&S Executive Career Management, once had a candidate interviewing for a vice president-level role. Stories of job-seekers making progress on their search, only to have the rug pulled out from under them later in the hiring process, have become all too common. A majority of job-seekers say they've experienced "love-bombing" or been ghosted during the interview process for a new role, according to a recent survey of 2,900 global employees by Greenhouse, the hiring platform. A similar share, 52%, say they've been ghosted in the hiring process, or had initial conversations, and in some cases made it to final rounds of interviews, only to never hear back from the recruiter or hiring manager about a decision. "Because of that, it's leaving people in a really confusing spot and giving folks anxiety and questioning, frankly, their career and their sanity."

Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

Joan Cros | Nurphoto via Getty ImagesFrench telecoms giant Orange on Tuesday said it's partnering with Microsoft -backed OpenAI and Facebook-owner Meta to build custom artificial intelligence models designed to better understand regional African languages. Orange said it's working with OpenAI and Meta to develop custom AI models built on their respective Whisper and Llama open-source AI models — openly available systems that can be adapted to meet specific needs — that can understand West African languages not understood by most conversational systems. The open-source AI models will be provided externally by Orange with a free license for non-commercial uses including public health and education, the company said. Orange plans to expand its custom AI model initiative to eventually cover all 18 West African countries. In addition to using AI systems to improve customer service, Orange is also using the tech to improve a core part of its business: mobile networks.

Gold prices lost about 3% after President-elect Donald Trump picked Scott Bessent as his Treasury secretary, with reports of Israel and Hezbollah nearing a ceasefire deal also eroding the safe-haven metal's appeal. A potential Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement and Bessent's appointment were the key contributors to the bullion selloff amid a risk-on sentiment, Shiels added. Higher interest rates tend to erode the appeal of non-interest bearing gold compared to Treasuries — a competing safe-haven asset. Gold prices fell to a two-month low right after Trump's victory before rebounding to the $2,700 levels. Similar to when the Middle East conflict first broke out, gold prices tend to react very sharply initially before correcting over time as economic factors come back into focus, Eckford added, maintaining that gold prices were still set to advance toward $3,000 in 2025.

CNN —With a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire on the horizon, an 18-year-old United Nations resolution has resurfaced as a blueprint for ending the war. The 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the hope that it could form the basis of a lasting truce. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. Here’s what we know about the resolution and why it is critical to a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In 2000, the UN established the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” for Israeli forces from Lebanon.

Denmark, known for its inventive restaurants and elegant design studios, is about to become known for something more basic: the world’s first belch and manure tax. That’s because there are five times as many pigs and cows in Denmark as there are people. And agriculture is becoming its largest share of climate pollution, putting lawmakers under intense public pressure to reduce it. “I think it’s good,” said Rasmus Angelsnes, 31, who was shopping for dinner in Copenhagen one recent afternoon. “It’s kind of a nudge to make different choices, maybe more climate-friendly choices.”

Many organizations experimenting with AI may find themselves stuck in a "perfection trap," reluctant to deploy anything less than 100% complete. This widespread hesitation to move forward can hinder AI progress — and very few organizations have moved beyond the experimentation phase. Roughly 80% of surveyed AI leaders report data-related challenges, including governance concerns. By avoiding the perfection trap, leaders can foster sustained innovation and maximize the value of their AI investments. Squirting cucumbers blast their seeds over distances hundreds of times their length, and now scientists know how the plants do it. A squirting cucumber in action is a remarkable sight, but if you blink, you might miss it — the eruption lasts about 0.03 second (30 milliseconds). Squirting cucumbers, also known by the scientific name Ecballium elaterium, are found across the Mediterranean and Europe, and in parts of northern Africa, Australia, Asia and North America. The seeds of a squirting cucumber can reach distances of about 33 feet away from the mother plant. But there’s also much to be learned by studying outliers that receive less attention, such as the squirting cucumber, Hay said.
