(Phil) Murphy are back on our front foot in terms of offshore wind,” he said. “New Jersey’s selection of an American-led project is a tremendous step forward for the growth of the domestic offshore wind industry,” the companies said in a statement. “Today’s NJBPU award brings the reality of offshore wind off the Jersey Shore one step closer, and it will build a future where wind can power our state’s economy and help us to transition off fossil fuels,” said Doug O'Malley, director of Environment New Jersey. The state plans to solicit another round of wind farm proposals in the first half of this year.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A new estimate shows hearing loss affects approximately 37.9 million Americans and is more common in rural areas than urban ones and in men than women. The estimates are for 2019 and only include people who have hearing loss in both ears. Experts say rural Americans need better access to hearing screenings and specialists. Audiologist Melanie Buhr-Lawler, a clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said she saw the threats to hearing health growing up on a farm in rural Wisconsin and later researching hearing loss in rural residents. “People who live in rural areas have a hearing health double-whammy," said Buhr-Lawler, who was not involved with the study.

New York CNN —New Hampshire, the “first-in-the-nation” primary state (which will hold those elections Tuesday), has been a relatively “better-off” state than most others nationally. Median income/povertyThe typical New Hampshire household has a higher income compared to the average in the United States, and a smaller share of state’s residents are in poverty. Southeastern New Hampshire — where three-quarters of the state’s residents live — benefits from being close to the Boston metropolitan area, said Phil Sletten, research director at the left-leaning New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute. Some 42% of New Hampshire residents approved of Biden on the economy, with 55% disapproving, according to a November CNN/University of New Hampshire poll. But when it comes to their personal finances, New Hampshire residents are downbeat.

Daimon Labs, by contrast, had raised $1.5 million from a handful of VCs. It was around then that he started Daimon Labs alongside Dhruv Malik and Xiang Zhang to pursue the dream of what he calls "machines of loving grace". He ignored every metric of success for an AI model, except one: perplexity. It's a measure of how certain the AI model is of its predictions. But even with ruthlessly optimized hardware and that single-minded focus, Daimon Labs still couldn't afford to build the model Benmalek was envisioning.

NEW YORK (AP) — Norman Jewison, the acclaimed and versatile Canadian-born director whose Hollywood films ranged from Doris Day comedies and “Moonstruck” to social dramas such as the Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night," has died at age 97. Throughout his long career, Jewison combined light entertainment with topical films that appealed to him on a deeply personal level. (Jewison lost out for best director to Mike Nichols of "The Graduate"). Among those who encouraged Jewison while making “In the Heat of the Night”: Robert F. Kennedy, whom the director met during a ski trip in Sun Valley, Idaho. Jewison shifted to feature films in 1963 with the comedy “40 Pounds of Trouble,” starring Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette.

New York CNN —The Federal Trade Commission ruled in a final order and opinion Monday that TurboTax, the popular tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising and banned the company from advertising its services for free unless it is free for all customers. By running ads for “free” tax services that many customers were not qualified for, the tax filing software violated the FTC Act and deceived consumers, the agency said. The FTC had first sued Intuit, TurboTax’s owner, for its deceptive advertising in 2022. Intuit cannot advertise or market any goods or services as free unless it’s free for all customers, the FTC ordered. The FTC added if the service isn’t actually free for the majority of consumers, TurboTax could state that as well.

France's Farmer Lobby Turns up Heat on Government Before Talks

Farmers cite a government tax on tractor fuel, cheap imports, water storage issues, price pressures from retailers and red tape among their grievances. France's largest farm union FNSEA has said it is considering nationwide protests in the coming weeks. Farming policy has always been a sensitive issue in France, the European Union's biggest agricultural producer, with thousands of independent producers of wine, meat and dairy. President Emmanuel Macron is wary of farmers' growing support for the far-right ahead of the European Parliament elections in June. Fearing a spillover from farmer protests in Germany, Poland and Romania, the government has withdrawn a draft farming law planned for debate this week and invited farming representatives for talks, starting on Monday afternoon.

For decades, federal and state officials have struggled to control farm runoff, the biggest source of nutrient pollution that is not typically federally regulated. Water pollution from factories and industry is typically federally regulated. The Biden administration recently proposed toughening regulations on meat and poultry processing plants to reduce pollution, Wall said. When nutrient pollution flows into the Gulf of Mexico, it spurs growth of bacteria that consume oxygen. That affects the productivity of commercial fisheries and marine life in general, but nutrient pollution is also damaging upstream.

The farm cost Buffett $280,000, a bargain after the 1980s bubble in farm prices burst, leaving many Iowa and Nebraska banks saddled with sour loans. NYU retail The second investment Buffett discussed was a New York retail property that he co-purchased in 1993 through an introduction by Larry Silverstein, Salomon Brothers' landlord when Buffett briefly stepped in as the investment bank's CEO. "If you don't feel comfortable making a rough estimate of the asset's future earnings, just forget it and move on." Key to investing Through telling stories of such specific assets, the legendary investor taught his followers that what matters the most to any investment is its future earnings. But behind the videos is something deeper: a skepticism of the companies and systems we rely on to sustain us. Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, have taken a shine to homesteading: Nearly half of the Homesteaders of America poll respondents were 39 or younger. Those generations are increasingly ditching city life not just for suburbs but for exurbs and rural areas, Business Insider reported earlier this month. It might be easier, people may reason, to just control what they can from start to finish. "For us, homesteading is being in a position where we can survive independently without outside resources if necessary," Chuck Anderson said.

The Farmers Had What the Billionaires Wanted

For six years a mysterious company called Flannery Associates, which Mr. Sramek controlled, had upended the town of 10,000 by spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to buy every farm in the area. It sued a group of holdouts who had refused its above-market offers, on the grounds that they were colluding for more. Residents worried it could be a front for foreign spies looking to surveil a nearby Air Force base. The truth was that Mr. Sramek wanted to build a city from the ground up, in an agricultural region whose defining feature was how little it had changed. They and others from the technology world had spent some $900 million on farmland in a demonstration of their dead seriousness about Mr. Sramek’s vision.

Egg prices are on the rise again. Here's why

Brandon Bell | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesEgg prices are on the rise again, after having fallen from record highs in 2023. Average egg prices jumped 8.9% from November to December, following a 2.2% rise the prior month, according to the consumer price index. December's egg price move was the largest relative to other items in the CPI basket, which measures prices of everything from concert tickets to furniture, electricity and prescription drugs. There are more than 368 million egg-laying chickens in the U.S., the USDA said. At the time, a farm group alleged that price gouging and profiteering among major egg suppliers also drove high prices in 2022, though some economists were skeptical that factor was at play.

House Republicans reintroduce bill to repeal 'death tax'

Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., speaks during a House Oversight and Accountability Committee impeachment inquiry hearing into U.S. President Joe Biden on Sept. 28, 2023. House Republicans this week reintroduced legislation to permanently repeal what they're calling the "death tax" — or federal estate tax, which is levied on inherited property above a certain value. Introduced by Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, with support from 162 lawmakers, the Death Tax Repeal Act follows past Republican proposals to abolish estate taxes, including a Senate bill from early 2023. The federal estate tax exemption adjusted for inflation by rising to $13.61 million per individual or $27.22 million for spouses in 2024. "Because the revenue effects are relatively small, they may have more leeway to eliminate [the estate tax] altogether if they had full control," Watson said.

"We were looking for an adventure of some sort, a pirate adventure, and Puerto Rico was perfect." AdvertisementThe lure of Puerto Rico comes with some strict guidelinesFor Lindsey and Flynn, an incentive to move to Puerto Rico was the territory's tax incentive Act 60. AdvertisementThe catch is that to take advantage of these perks, you must be what Puerto Rico calls a "bonafide" resident. For example, if you are a mediocre golfer from outside Puerto Rico and are looking for similar people in Puerto Rico, there is a WhatsApp group for that. If you moved to Puerto Rico for tax incentives and want to share your experiences, contact this reporter at cgaines@businessinsider.com.

Known as "border radio," the unregulated American radio industry sprung up on Mexico's northern border in the 1930s. Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesIn the years that followed, other border radio stations sprung up in Mexico. Hank Thompson, another country music star who grew up in Waco in the 30s, said border radio stations were the only stations where one could listen to country music most of the time. But the legacy of border radio stations continued to live on in the country music they helped popularize, as well as its cousin genres. According to American honky-tonk star Webb Pierce, country music "might not have survived if it hadn't been for border radio."

An Israeli company has received a preliminary green light from health officials to sell the world's first steaks made from cultivated beef cells, not the entire animal, officials said. Aleph Farms, of Rehovot, Israel, was granted the initial go-ahead by the Israeli Health Ministry in December, the company said in a news release. Aleph Farms joins Upside Foods and Good Meat, two California-based firms that got the go-ahead to sell cultivated chicken in the U.S. in June. Cultivated meat is grown in large steel tanks using cells that come from a living animal, a fertilized egg or a special bank of stored cells. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

“It was very emotional.”The idea to run the marathon was Mr. Lecamp’s. When he invited Mr. Messner to join him in Antarctica, Mr. Lecamp insisted that they run the entire course together. Mr. Messner, an accomplished alpinist who scaled Mont Blanc in 2022 wearing a previous version of the 1858 Geosphere watch, was game. “I generally see life consisting of possibilities, and this was just another possibility to know my body a bit better,” Mr. Messner said. “I’m not always wearing a watch while mountaineering, but when running a marathon, it makes much more sense because time counts,” Mr. Messner said.
