A man described as an "experienced anti-money laundering specialist" pleaded guilty on Wednesday to illegally funneling more than $1 billion in lucrative, high-risk transactions through small financial institutions, the U.S. Department of Justice said. The man, 56-year-old Gyanendra Asre of Greenwich, Connecticut, pleaded guilty in Brooklyn federal court to one count of failing to maintain an anti-money laundering program in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, meanwhile, on Wednesday assessed a $100,000 civil penalty on Asre and banned him from participating in any financial institution's affairs for five years. He had previously been employed as a senior vice president at a domestic bank, and was "experienced in international banking and trained in anti-money laundering compliance and procedures," the DOJ said. Asre "represented to the NYSEFCU that he and his businesses would conduct appropriate anti-money laundering oversight as required by the Bank Secrecy Act," according to the DOJ.

Madonna performed at Madison Square Garden on Monday night as part of her Celebration Tour, a lavish stage spectacle devoted to her catalog of hits as the Queen of Pop. During “Like a Prayer,” she sang from a spinning carousel filled with jumbo crucifixes and shirtless men. “I don’t know when I’m going to be back here playing again, but I’m doing this show like it’s my last show,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. “And I’m doing this show like it’s my first show.”Before the concert, the scene outside the arena resembled a fashion runway as Madonna fans arrived to serve up style tributes to her. Men emerged from the subway wearing black biker boots and leather jackets.

Even though I love these people here, I love to shut them up," Durant said after scoring 33 points to lead the Suns to a 136-120 victory Wednesday night. Durant added eight assists in his first game in Brooklyn since being traded to Phoenix nearly a year ago. Jusuf Nurkic added 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns, overwhelming an undersized Nets team as the Suns won for the ninth time in 11 games. The entire Nets team was too small. Phoenix played without starting forward Grayson Allen, who sprained his right ankle Monday in a victory in Miami.

Americans spend, on average, more than two and a half hours on social media each day. His book offers practical strategies for stepping back, reevaluating and unsubscribing from the ideas, habits and tech engagements that keep us from happiness. Advances in health care, like cutting-edge diagnostic tools, are just one example of the incredible benefits of the tech revolution. The crushing pace of technology doesn’t allow for the milliseconds it takes for us to be conscious enough to step back. This is a tall task, but I believe the more people can hear that voice, the healthier our society will be.

In her 14-page order, Brooklyn Federal Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall traced the evolution of hip-hop over five decades, referencing tracks from over a dozen artists before ultimately finding the lyrics inadmissible. “From the genre’s nascence as an oral tradition, rap artists have played the part of storytellers, providing a lens into their lives and those in their communities,” Hall wrote. The use of rap lyrics in criminal prosecutions has become a contentious subject in several high-profile cases, including the ongoing racketeering trial of Young Thug. Defense lawyers have claimed the government dragged its feet in indicting Washington and Jordan, making it harder for them to defend themselves. Fire crews found the burned remnants Tuesday of a prized bronze statue of Jackie Robinson that was stolen last week from a public park in Kansas, authorities said. The statue, which was cut at the figure's ankles, went missing Thursday morning. Surveillance video shows two people hauling the sculpture away in the dark, to a truck that was later found abandoned. He said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement could be erected within a matter of months. “This now lets us know that we need a new statue,” he said of the destroyed remains.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Simmons had 10 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in his return from a 38-game absence, Mikal Bridges added 33 points and the Brooklyn Nets routed the Utah Jazz 147-114 on Monday night. Simmons hadn't played since Nov. 6 because of a pinched nerve in his lower back. 1 pick in the 2016 draft played 18 minutes off the bench, made all five shots and likely would have had a triple-double if not for a minutes restriction. Keyonte George scored 21 points for the Jazz, who had won two straight. Bridges then opened the fourth with consecutive 3-pointers to make it 110-87 and the Nets led by 35 later in the period.

The theme of the night was the movie “Saltburn,” which, based on the number of attendees who arrived dressed in costume, is quickly garnering cult status. It was like hopping in a time machine to 2007. The same tone set the mood for the evening’s festivities. There were “bathwater” cocktails — made with pineapple juice, rum and coconut milk for extra, soapy froth — for sale at the bar. (The drink tasted fine, even if its inspiration, a scene in the film where Barry Keoghan laps up Jacob Elordi’s leftover bathwater, is perhaps less than appetizing.)

Opening statements are scheduled in Brooklyn federal court for the murder trial of Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, who prosecutors say killed the 37-year-old Jay over a drug deal in 2002. Run-DMC espoused an anti-drug stance in lyrics and PSAs, but prosecutors allege Jay became involved in trafficking cocaine in the mid 1990s. Prior to his murder, they say he had acquired 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of the drug, which Washington, Jordan and others were going to distribute in Maryland. Prosecutors say witnesses have now identified both Washington, 59, and Jordan, 40, as the assailants. They say Jordan, then 18, was at his pregnant girlfriend’s home at the time of the murder and witnesses can place him there.

Q: Six months ago, while I was out of town, there were two unattended deaths in my 60-unit co-op building in Brooklyn. My apartment is above the unit where this occurred, and I returned to flies and a smelly apartment. Two months later, the co-op board got a court order allowing it to break the NYPD seal and remove the apartment’s contents. In typical cases where a neighbor causes unwanted odors, you would approach the co-op board and make a claim against the neighbor, depending upon the terms in your co-op’s governing documents. In this case, the co-op board could make the argument that your neighbor’s estate is the responsible party, if the deceased tenants were shareholders, or the sponsor, if they were renters.

SUBCULTURE VULTURE: A Memoir in Six Scenes, by Moshe KasherAbout three-quarters of the way through his new memoir, “Subculture Vulture,” the writer and comedian Moshe Kasher warns that, right about now, readers might want to bail and head to YouTube: He’s about to explain the Talmud. The Mishna is a written version of collected oral law, he explains. If that sort of joke isn’t to your taste, he’s right: Abandon ship now. Talmudic studies à la Kasher offer the same solid balance he demonstrates throughout the book. You’ll probably learn something — unless you’ve lived an identical life to his, which seems statistically impossible — and laugh in roughly equal measure.

It’s immediately clear that the 30-something Gasda, whose 2022 play “Dimes Square” captured the crowd of artists, writers and scenesters in New York City’s downtown, has spent significant time observing his younger subjects. With the exception of a few awkward phrases, his naturalistic play captures the way Gen Z talks. “Zoomers” opens with three roommates ambling around their Brooklyn apartment in Bushwick, a land where shaggy hair is a personality trait and hard kombucha might as well be on tap. Michael (Jonah O’Hara-David), Jacob (Henry Lynch), and Jada (Reneé-Nicole Powell) are recovering from a night of respective drinking, smoking weed and existential dread. For the emotionally stunted Jacob in particular, it’s a pleasurable escape whenever conversations get too heated.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested twice in roughly 48 hours after stalking Taylor Swift outside her Manhattan home, the police said on Tuesday. The man, David Crowe, of Seattle, was charged by the police on Monday with two counts of harassment and two counts of stalking. A neighbor and a security guard at the pop star’s building in TriBeCa had spotted Mr. Crowe, who was first arrested near Ms. Swift’s residence over the weekend. Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, security personnel called 911 to report that Mr. Crowe had tried to enter the residence, the police said. A judge had issued the warrants after Mr. Crowe failed to show up to court to answer those summonses.
