As it turned out, Vivek Ramaswamy only got one shot to lose himself in the music. Marshall B. Mathers III, better known as the rapper Eminem, has told Mr. Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential candidate, that he is no longer to use Eminem music on the campaign trail, just weeks after Mr. Ramaswamy broke into an impromptu version of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” at the Iowa State Fair. At the fair, Mr. Ramaswamy, the 38-year-old political newcomer, had told Gov. “Vivek just got on the stage and cut loose,” his campaign spokeswoman, Tricia McLaughlin, said on Monday. “To the American people’s chagrin, we will have to leave the rapping to the real Slim Shady,” another of Mr. Mathers’s nom de plumes.

Ayanna Pressley on Sunday hit back at Vivek Ramaswamy after he compared her to a KKK grand wizard. In making his comments last week, Ramaswamy argued that Pressley and Kendi didn't embrace diversity of opinion among members of minority groups. Al Sharpton, Pressley firmly rejected Ramaswamy's remarks, calling his words "dangerous." … We don't need any more brown faces that don't want to be a brown voice," Pressley said during the event. Vivek Ramaswamy has recently made a series of controversial comments about race. He said white supremacy is rare, racism is "manufactured," and compared Ayanna Pressley to the KKK. At a campaign stop in Iowa on Friday, Ramaswamy suggested white supremacy is as realistic as unicorns. Maybe I will meet a — maybe I will meet a unicorn sooner.

Vivek Ramaswamy argued that Mike Pence missed a "historic opportunity" on January 6, 2021. Ramaswamy said on NBC's "Meet the Press," that Pence should have sought major election reforms. I think that there was a historic opportunity that he missed, to reunite this country in that window," he said. I think that was a missed opportunity." GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy refused to back down from a rather surprising opinion. Ramaswamy compared Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley and author Ibram X. Kendi to KKK grand wizards. "But can you have an intellectually honest conversation when you accuse her of being a grand wizard of the KKK?" "These are the words of the modern grand wizards of the modern KKK," Ramaswamy said at the Iowa campaign stop, NBC reported. Chris Christie to understand what happens when a Republican candidate is highly critical of the former president. His net favorability rating in the latest Quinnipiac University poll stands at minus-44 points among Republicans. Those with an opinion viewed him unfavorably by more than a 3-to-1 ratio (26% unfavorable to 8% favorable, a net favorability rating of minus-18 points). Among those who have, Hurd has a similar net favorability ratio to Hutchinson’s – 4% viewed him favorably and 11% unfavorably. This leaves Trump’s GOP rivals with a conundrum that even Harry Houdini would find difficult to solve: how to eat away at Trump’s support without being seen as trying to bring him down.

Disbelief flashed across Vivek Ramaswamy’s face. The Republican presidential candidates, minus the front-runner, were 42 minutes into their first debate when former Vice President Mike Pence took issue with the young businessman’s claim that America was gripped by a national identity crisis. “We’re not looking for a new national identity,” said Mr. Pence, 64. “The American people are the most faith-filled, freedom-loving, idealistic, hard-working people the world has ever known.”“It is not morning in America,” Mr. Ramaswamy, 38, shot back in his rapid-fire Harvard debating style. Russia said Ukraine fired a string of drones over the weekend in an attempt to attack border regions and the capital, Moscow, in the latest strikes deep inside Russian borders. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday that its forces had intercepted Ukrainian drones overnight in the regions of Bryansk and Kursk, both of which border Ukraine. A drone crashed into an apartment building in Kursk but did not cause any injuries, the regional governor said on the Telegram messaging app. The border region of Belgorod also was attacked by drones over the weekend, according to the Russian authorities. The Russian claims had not been independently verified and Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment, as is their general custom on attacks inside Russia.

That’s the true mark of a real milestone on this campaign,” Ramaswamy joked. For many voters in Iowa, the debate was their introduction to the 38-year-old candidate. A survey of potential Republican primary voters who watched the debate conducted by The Washington Post, FiveThirtyEight and Ipsos showed 26% of voters thought Ramaswamy won the debate, second highest behind DeSantis. Still, the Ramaswamy campaign said it raised $600,000 in the day after the debate, the largest single-day total since its launch. The Ramaswamy campaign plans to continue visiting Iowa and answering voter questions like Christensen’s around the state, Chapman told CNN.

NEWTON, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said he would like Elon Musk to be an adviser in his administration should he be elected. The statement came in response to a town hall question from a voter on Friday, asking the 38-year-old entrepreneur where he would seek guidance if elected. Musk on Aug. 17 reposted an interview on his social media platform, X, between Ramaswamy and Tucker Carlson, calling Ramaswamy “a very promising candidate.”Ramaswamy admires the mass layoffs Musk conducted after taking over Twitter last year. Last month, Ramaswamy participated in a virtual discussion with Musk where the CEO described himself as a moderate voter. Ron DeSantis announced his bid for the White House in a Twitter Space in May, a stunt which crashed the platform due to high traffic.

First, Mr. Manuel is not an “Obama appointee” but rather participated in a leadership development program run by the Obama Foundation in 2019. Noting high winds and drought, the company requested permission to fill a private reservoir for fire control, though the reservoir was not connected to fire hydrants. The water agency asked the company whether the fire department had made the request, received no answer and said that it needed the approval of a farmer who relied on the water for his crops. The company said that it could not reach the farmer, but that the agency approved the request hours later. The executive, in another letter, also wrote that “we would never imply responsibility” on Mr. Manuel’s part.

The atmospherics are distractingFormer President Donald Trump’s stone-faced mug shot and the televised motorcade of his trip to court painted his arrest Thursday at the Fulton County jail in Atlanta with a reality TV theatricality. Trump’s control of the party he remade around himself continues to hold. But ultimately, just as he was forced to submit to a mug shot, Trump will have to submit to the fact that juries of his peers, American citizens, will decide these trials of the century. It’s far from a mainstream view, and Trump’s multiple arrests have so far yielded little in the way of mass protest. He could win acquittal in any or all four of the trials in which he’s a defendant.

Never Back Down is looking to reverse DeSantis' presidential campaign slump with a sizable ad buy. DeSantis has promoted his conservative record on the trail, but Trump continues to dominate the GOP race. Top officials for Never Back Down, who were encouraged by DeSantis' debate performance on Wednesday, outlined their strategy at a lunch shortly before the debate, according to The Post. Such a development would also be welcome news amid headlines about layoffs and campaign shakeups in the DeSantis campaign. Like far too many of you, I watched the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night, during which all of the most popular contenders in the field tried to stand out and establish themselves as a serious alternative for the Republican presidential nomination. Donald Trump, who wasn’t on stage for the debate. The pretense of the debate was that the candidates could talk about themselves and the future of the Republican Party without the former president, but that was simply impossible. But the issue wasn’t just that Trump was unavoidable; it was that none of the other candidates had much to say for themselves. Even the most dynamic of the contenders, Vivek Ramaswamy, was doing little more than his own spin on Trump’s persona.

Vivek Ramaswamy, rising in the polls and buoyed by the first Republican primary debate this week, was barnstorming through central Iowa on Friday with a trademark smile and a remarkably bleak generational diagnosis of what ails younger America. The government “systematically lies to us,” he said. He told another gathering in Indianola, “We face a nonzero risk that the United States of America could cease to exist,” obliterated by the blossoming alliance of Russia and China. And yet somehow his evocation of a generational malaise seems to resonate, at least with the crowds that are packing the restaurants, cafes and even larger venues in the state that will cast the first ballots this January for the Republican presidential nomination. Noticeably, however, those crowds don’t seem to include many young voters.

Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis speaks at the first Republican candidates' debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. August 23, 2023. But it showed DeSantis remained stuck in distant second place with 13% of support of Republican respondents while Trump, the former president, had 52%, marginally higher than the 47% he received in a Reuters/Ipsos poll in early August. Still, about half of Republican respondents said they were more likely to support DeSantis based on what they had heard about the debate. About four in 10 Republicans said they were more likely to back Ramaswamy or Haley based on the debate. Only 5% of Republicans said they outright backed Ramaswamy while only 4% supported Haley, similar shares to what they had before the debate.

A Washington Post/FiveThirtyEight/Ipsos survey of Republicans after the debate showed that only 4 percent believed Mr. Scott had won, placing him toward the back of the pack. The day after the debate, he garnered only 3 percent of the candidate searches, which can be a metric of voter interest. Eric Levine, a New York lawyer and Republican donor who attended the debate as a guest of Mr. Scott’s campaign, said he believed the senator had won by staying above the fray. “Very few questions were actually asked of Tim Scott. “Tim Scott is built for this race,” Ms. Gitcho said.

Hand-raising is a juvenile and reductive exercise in any political debate, but it’s worth unpacking this moment, which provides clarity into the damage that Mr. Trump has inflicted on his own party. But even Nikki Haley, though she generally tried to position herself as a reasonable alternative to Mr. Ramaswamy’s earsplitting drivel, raised her hand. Only Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson demonstrated some respect for the rule of law by opposing the election of a criminal. Mr. Hutchinson said Mr. Trump was “morally disqualified” from being president because of what happened on Jan. 6, and made the interesting argument that he may also be legally disqualified under the 14th Amendment for inciting an insurrection. Mr. Christie said the country had to stop “normalizing” Mr. Trump’s conduct, which he said was beneath the office of president.
