DETROIT — General Motors is raising its 2023 guidance for a second time this year after the automaker reported second-quarter results Tuesday that were up sharply year over year. The Detroit automaker also said it is increasing cost-cutting measures through next year and now plans to reduce $3 billion in expenditures compared with previous guidance of $2 billion. Here's what GM reported for its second quarter:Adjusted earnings per share: $1.91. However, the guidance increase is contingent on GM successfully negotiating new labor agreements with the United Auto Workers and the Canadian Unifor unions this year without a work stoppage or strike. A work stoppage would add to the auto industry's yearslong production problems resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and significant supply chain constraints such as semiconductor chips.

Four major EV battery plants have opened in recent years and 19 more are planned with Monday’s announcement, according to the UAW. GM has outlined this year a total of $1.7 billion in investments in Flint facilities to support the next generation of its heavy duty pickups. DETROIT – Leaders of the United Auto Workers are withholding a re-election endorsement for President Joe Biden until the union's concerns about the auto industry's transition to all-electric vehicles are addressed, according to a Tuesday letter sent by UAW President Shawn Fain to union staff. Fain, who was elected union president in March, said the UAW wants a "just transition" for workers. He argues that is currently not the case as automakers invest billions of dollars, with the support of taxpayer money, to move from traditional vehicles to EVs. How to transition traditional auto workers into new jobs for EVs has been a major concern for the UAW for several years. The UAW has historically supported Democrats, however former President Donald Trump was able to gain notable support from blue-collar auto workers during his presidential campaign.

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Reuters) - Chrysler-parent Stellantis NV (STLAM.MI) wants to cut approximately 3,500 hourly U.S. jobs and is offering voluntary exit packages, according to a United Auto Workers union letter made public Tuesday. A person briefed on the matter said the figure might be lower than the figure cited in the UAW letter. The action impacted about 1,350 workers at the Belvidere, Illinois, plant that built the Jeep Cherokee SUV and resulted in indefinite layoffs. The UAW letter said openings created by workers leaving would be filled by workers on indefinite layoff. Stellantis said in February that about 40,000 U.S. hourly workers were eligible for profit sharing.

DETROIT, April 21 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain said on Friday there is "no excuse" for Detroit's automakers to set up electric vehicle operations and ventures that are not unionized. Detroit automakers have set up several U.S. joint venture battery factories that are not covered by their current agreements with the UAW. Fain said workers at joint venture battery plants should earn higher wages than production workers at older Detroit Three factories. "I look forward to bring that work under the UAW," Fain said. The UAW president said workers displaced as factories dedicated to combustion vehicle technology lose work should have a right to get jobs at joint venture factories.

Stellantis in a statement praised the court's decision to turn away what it described as "baseless claims" by GM. "Today's decision upholding the district court's dismissal of GM's lawsuit is another reaffirmation that its claims are meritless," Stellantis said. FCA paid a $30 million fine while the UAW agreed to independent oversight to resolve the U.S. Justice Department investigation.

New York CNN —About 5,000 General Motors white collar employees have taken buyouts, according to GM CFO Paul Jacobson. The buyouts were offered to all US salaried staff with at least five years at the company and international executives who had worked at GM at least two years. While it was a voluntary program, GM told its staff that “employees are strongly encouraged to consider the program.”“The voluntary program came in in line with our expectations,” Jacobson said. But while GM may avoid a widespread layoff, it did confirm in March that it cut a “few hundred” salaried staff “following our most recent performance calibration.”GM has 81,000 salaried employees worldwide, with 58,000 of those in the United States. GM (GM) is not the only automaker lowering staff numbers in a cost-cutting effort.
