CNN —In the early heyday of miniseries, “Shōgun” was the show of the year in 1980, and it might be again 44 years later. That chaos also creates the possibility of one regent emerging to consolidate power, and perhaps even gain the title of shōgun. Of course, in today’s heavily fragmented streaming environment “Shōgun” won’t be the massive ratings hit that it was back when there were three broadcast networks (and not much else), but those who wade into this dense history will be amply rewarded. “All men can be broken,” Toranaga muses at one point, with a quiet sense of menace and determination. If only all limited series could be half as good as “Shōgun.”“Shōgun” premieres February 27 on Hulu and at 10 p..m. ET the same day on FX.

Recalling those sounds makes Ms. Gorgano smile. So is Ms. Gorgano. She is in the process of buying the four-bedroom house in Commack, N.Y., from her mother, who now divides her time between Florida and her partner’s Long Island condo. “Financially it made sense,” said Ms. Gorgano, 25, a speech pathologist, who is buying the house for about $600,000 with her boyfriend and co-buyer Mike Stillman. It’s less than what she would get if she was selling it to a stranger,” Ms. Gorgano added.

I just went on my first alcohol-free vacation and found that I enjoyed myself much more. In 2018, my friend sent me a listing for Cerro Gordo, an abandoned mining town in California. In the late 1800s, Cerro Gordo was a prosperous mining town. But right now, I'm sitting 900 feet under a ghost town that's miles away from them. Since I arrived, Cerro Gordo has been hit with storms, fire, a flood, an earthquake, and a blizzard. What It’s Like to Be a Sociopath

Photo illustration by Bráulio Amado Talk What It’s Like to Be a SociopathSociopaths are modern-day boogeymen, and the word “sociopath” is casually tossed around to describe the worst, most amoral among us. Gagne wrote “Sociopath,” her buzzy forthcoming memoir, to try to correct some of those misunderstandings and provide a fuller picture of sociopathy, which is now more frequently referred to as antisocial personality disorder. Just because I don’t care about someone else’s pain, so to speak, doesn’t mean I want to cause more of it. I’m not sure neurotypicals need any, because I have been identifying as a sociopath for years now, and my experience with people who don’t know that has been positive. That is what the sociopath experience is almost all the time.

The new six-part mini-series “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,” the latest installment in the sprawling “Walking Dead” universe, premieres Sunday on AMC and AMC+. It finds Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprising their longtime roles as Rick Grimes and Michonne, the weathered survivors of a postapocalyptic wasteland populated by flesh-devouring zombies. “The Ones Who Live” picks their story up where it left off in the original series, revealing what happened to the couple after they exited the show. But it also involves other characters, settings and organizations that have either appeared or been mentioned in “The Walking Dead” and its spinoffs, including the dystopian city the Civic Republic, its high-tech military the C.R.M., and the slippery villain Jadis, played by Pollyanna McIntosh. (For their part, Lincoln and Gurira have said that they didn’t keep up with the whole series either, so you’re in good company.)

In a job interview, your body language can make or break your chances of landing an offer. This means that, in a job interview, how you speak is just as important as what you say, says Bert Bean, CEO of the staffing firm Insight Global. Bean has interviewed hundreds of job applicants in his 19-year career as a recruiter-turned-CEO. Showing that you are energized and enthusiastic about a role is the top "green flag" hiring managers look for in a job interview, Shekhinah Bass, an executive at Goldman Sachs, told CNBC Make It in August. It's important to note, however, that body language isn't the only way to show your enthusiasm or engagement during a job interview.

"Look Again" authors Tali Sharot (left) and Cass R. Sunstein explore how seeing things with fresh eyes can improve happiness, relationships, work and community. CNN: What do you recommend for people considering big life changes? Sunstein: The data we have suggests, if you’re seriously thinking of making a life change, you probably should. Was This the Most Democratic Fashion Show Ever?
  + stars: | 2024-02-22 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Autocracy may be much in the news, and increasingly in vogue depending on the electorate, but as Milan Fashion Week began, democracy was in the air. Then 1,000 viewers signed up to sit “front row” from home, their faces live-streamed on screens all around the show venue, so as they were watching the audience and the models on the catwalk, the audience and the models were watching back. So the crowd at the show could see, for example, the viewer who decided to disguise themselves using an alien filter, resembling a creature from “War of the Worlds,” or the viewer who situated her generous cleavage right in the middle of the screen, or the ones who watched with family members, or their dogs. So the show crowd would be reminded, in other words, of the people it was really all about. Fashion, in essence the most dictatorial of disciplines, where designers traditionally handed down styles like edicts from on high, has been theoretically democratizing for awhile now — ever since it jumped from the salon to the store via ready-to-wear, which changed the barriers to entry from class and caste to pocketbook.

How baleen whales, which include humpback whales, are able to sing underwater has eluded scientists since whale songs were first discovered more than 50 years ago. A baleen whale’s larynx is shaped differently from other mammals. This structural adaptation allows the leviathan to breathe massive amounts of air in and out when they go to the surface, according to the study. Air sacs also evolved in a way that may allow a baleen whale to recycle air while creating vocal sounds, according to researchers. This means that most boating noises mask calls between baleen whales, reducing the distance over which they can communicate.

Ron DeSantis of Florida told supporters in a call on Wednesday that he would not want to be Donald J. Trump’s vice president, suggested it would be a “mistake” for Mr. Trump to consider “identity politics” in making his selection for a running mate and left wide open the door to a 2028 presidential run. “I haven’t ruled anything out,” Mr. DeSantis said of a 2028 presidential run, as he outlined plans to stay involved in politics beyond Florida. In a more than 30-minute call held to thank backers who had volunteered to serve as his presidential delegates, the governor was unusually candid in assessing his failed 2024 campaign a month after he dropped out of the race. He also sounded off on conservative news media outlets that he said had backed the former president over him. He also spoke about “all the baggage Trump has” as a concern for Republicans headed into the fall, but said that President Biden was “going to be the gift that keeps on giving.”

Read on for some of the things that surprised me when I first got to Ireland. I thought a lot of the phrases in Ireland would be similar to what I heard in the UK. But I knew I finally adapted to the language when I found the words "thanks a million" (or "thanks a mil") and "bye bye bye … bye bye bye bye" after any phone call slipping off my tongue. Although it's been an adjustment, unpredictability is what makes Ireland feel like things are still run by people, not by algorithms and advancement. A severe snow shortage, blamed on dry weather, threatened to derail the entire winter season, leaving both travelers and tourism operators disappointed. Regardless of whether you’re a full-time athlete or someone who enjoys skiing and snowboarding for fun, Gulmarg offers a winter experience like no other. Today, travelers headed for Asia’s highest ski resort can enjoy over 1,330 vertical meters (4,363 feet) of skiable terrain, with lifts offering access to four separate skiing zones on Mount Apharwat.
