Stocks were battered in the past week, as investors reacted to a hawkish message from the Federal Reserve. The announcement from the U.S. accounting watchdog removes the risk that around 200 Chinese companies, including Alibaba (BABA.N), could be kicked off U.S. stock exchanges. "This falls into the category of a game changing view of Chinese companies because the threat of their delisting seems to have been eliminated." Washington and Beijing reached a landmark deal in August to settle a long-running dispute over auditing compliance of U.S.-listed Chinese firms. Authorities in China have long been reluctant to let overseas regulators inspect local accounting firms, citing national security concerns. U.S. lawmakers in 2020 agreed to legislation that would oust Chinese companies from U.S. stock exchanges unless they adhere to American auditing standards.

An investigation commissioned by the National Women’s Soccer League and its players union found “widespread misconduct” dating back a decade that included instances of sexual abuse, manipulation and mocking players’ bodies. Misconduct against players has occurred at the vast majority of NWSL clubs at various times, from the earliest years of the League to the present.”The league was founded in 2012 and is the longest-running professional women’s soccer league in U.S. history, the report said. Some of those steps include: strengthening the league-wide anti-harassment policy put in place in 2021; enhancing vetting procedures for new hires and establishing an anonymous league-wide hotline so players can report misconduct. “Our investigation over the past year has revealed a league in which abuse was systematic. Some coaches’ misconduct dates to prior professional leagues and some to youth soccer.”This is an ongoing story.
CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin reported that the charges against Bankman-Fried include wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy and money laundering. Neither the Attorney General of the Bahamas nor the Royal Bahamas Police Force would confirm the nature of the charges against Bankman-Fried. "I didn't ever try to commit fraud," Bankman-Fried said. The CFTC and lawmakers have begun their probes into FTX and Bankman-Fried, who told Sorkin he was down to his last $100,000. Failed lender BlockFi sued Bankman-Fried in November, seeking unnamed collateral that the FTX founder provided for the crypto lending firm.
The Atlas Lions made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal. They made history as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Less spoken about is that they also rate better on television than the men do in the World Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see, though with the US, Canada and Mexico hosting the 2026 World Cup, soccer isn’t going away anytime soon.

Data for October was revised higher to show the PPI gaining 0.3% instead of 0.2% as previously reported. "I don’t believe this changes anything about what the Fed was going to do on Wednesday in terms of raising rates by 50 basis points." The strength of the data was broad based with ex-food, energy, and trade also topping estimates at 0.3% MoM vs. 0.1% MoM anticipated in an acceleration from last month's 0.2% MoM print. If there’s any positive signs it’s the yearly decline.”“Bottom line is inflation is in a down-trend but month-on-month it’s hotter than expected. Then, in March I expect it to be a 25 basis points after which they’ll hold to see how all these rate hikes have played out unless something dramatic happens.

No matter what Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell tells market participants these days, it seems they only hear the good stuff. Two recent examples: First in July, when Powell hinted that smaller interest rate hikes could be on the way. Chair Powell is really trying to message the fact that the fed funds rate has to be restrictive to tamp down inflation. A month and a half later, Powell delivered an uncharacteristically terse speech at the Fed's annual Jackson Hole, Wyoming summit. One more chance So Powell heads into next week's Federal Open Market Committee meeting with another opportunity to set the market straight.

Bankman-Fried could face a host of potential charges – civil and criminal – as well as private lawsuits from millions of FTX creditors, legal experts told CNBC. There are three different, possibly simultaneous legal threats that Bankman-Fried faces in the United States alone, Levin told CNBC. He told CNBC, "prosecutors would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bankman-Fried or his associates committed criminal fraud." (Carter was not an FTX investor, and told CNBC that his fund passed on early FTX rounds.) "People should not jump to the conclusion that something is not happening just because it has not been publicly disclosed," Levin told CNBC.
