CNN —Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he’s “fine,” after freezing during a news conference on Wednesday. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, stopped speaking in the middle of remarks at his regularly scheduled weekly news conference on Capitol Hill. After a 30-second pause, his colleagues crowded around to see if he was OK and asked him how he felt. GOP Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming was seen gripping McConnell’s arm and whispered to him, “Hey Mitch, anything else you want to say? McConnell, asked by CNN what happened and if it is related to his fall earlier this year, said “No, I’m fine,” and then moved on to other reporters.

The semiconductor industry has come under pressure as global economic woes dent demand for chips used in everything from cars to cellphones. "Looking into the third quarter, wafer demand outlook is uncertain given prolonged inventory correction in the supply chain," he added. However, the company kept its guidance for capital spending this year at $3 billion, compared with $2.7 billion for last year. "We are gearing up to offer the necessary silicon interposer technology and capacity to fulfil emerging AI market demand from customers," Wang said.

The rate hike, the Fed's 11th in its last 12 meetings, set the benchmark overnight interest rate in the 5.25%-5.50% range, and the accompanying policy statement left the door open to another increase. The Fed raised (the Fed funds target rate) by a quarter point and the vote was unanimous, and the move puts rates at a 22-year high." "We think recent data is consistent with the US policy rate peaking in July, as core CPI inflation slowed sharply in June. "Fed Chair Powell is going to suggest that for the time being that they need to assess more information for inflation. "Markets are for the most part becoming more confident the Fed won't have to raise rates in September.

“I respect you and believe you deserve to hear this directly from me,” he said, reading from a letter he had prepared. “For years, I struggled to accept a part of myself. But now, after all I have been through, I finally have the courage to open up to you about something. I am a gay man.”Such an announcement is extremely unusual in conservative Japan, the only G7 country that has not legalized same-sex unions. Earlier this summer, the Japanese Parliament passed an L.G.B.T.Q rights bill but it had been watered down by the political right, stating that there “should be no unfair discrimination” against gay and transgender people.

The Friend Trip: Fun Without the Friction
  + stars: | 2023-07-26 | by ( Shannon Sims | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Whoever said a friend is a friend forever has clearly never experienced a group trip that has devolved into a maelstrom of conflicting plans and bickering over restaurant bills. All your friends are not travel friends,” advises N’dea Irvin-Choy, a 27-year-old Los Angeles-based travel influencer, on her popular TikTok account. She suggests picking travel partners who share similar interests, and deciding ahead of time what kind of a trip you will be taking — relaxation, partying, adventure. Once you’re in booking mode, Mobili provides a way to see each group member’s travel bookings at once, a tool that is especially useful for larger groups. Others in the group can then collaborate with the same trip by adding their own bookings to create a group itinerary.

Is It Time to Toss My Skin Care Products?
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( Erica Sweeney | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Q: I have a drawer full of skin care products of dubious age. Unless the product is classified as a drug, as acne treatments and sunscreen products are, you probably won’t find an expiration date on it, said Dr. Bruce Brod, a dermatologist at Penn Medicine. But that labeling is not required on skin care products or cosmetics either, Dr. Brod said. If skin care products are so old that you have forgotten when you bought them, you should avoid using them, Dr. Brod said. “It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” he added, since applying products that are past their prime can come with risks.

In the past two years, book bans have surged in the United States, driven by conservative activists who have targeted books about race and racism or L.G.B.T.Q. While the fight has largely centered on books that are available in school classrooms and libraries, the legislation in Texas has drawn booksellers directly into the conflict. “Some school libraries have books with sexually explicit and vulgar materials,” he said during the bill signing session. But the plaintiffs said that the Texas law would take decisions out of the hands of schools and parents and put the burden on vendors instead. The law’s opponents also argue the legislation will increase the number of book bans in Texas, which already leads the country in removing books from schools, according to an analysis by the free speech organization PEN America.

"Congress, when passing the antitrust statutes, was setting out a policy preference, in many cases, for competition over monopoly," Khan said. "Any given year, the antitrust agencies get anywhere between 1,500 to 3,000 merger filings. Of that number, 98% go through without even any second questions being asked by the agencies," Khan said. Khan also defended the agency's record in court when it comes to merger cases. That's in part because the Supreme Court hasn't taken up merger cases as frequently in recent decades, meaning "that older law is still good law."

Conservative groups nationwide have pushed to ban books that discuss L.G.B.T.Q. issues from libraries and schools, saying that parents should be able to control what their children are being taught. The group has promoted a “Hide the Pride” campaign that encourages supporters to check out or move books that depict L.G.B.T.Q. Pentagon officials had widely expected the nomination to go to Admiral Samuel Paparo, who leads the Navy in the Pacific and who has experience grappling with the growing challenge from China. "Throughout her career, Admiral Franchetti has demonstrated extensive expertise in both the operational and policy arenas," Biden said in a statement, noting that she was the second woman ever to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy. Last year, Biden picked Admiral Linda Fagan to lead the U.S. Coast Guard, making her its first female commanding officer. Franchetti would become the first woman to lead a military service within the Defense Department and to join the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a group of eight top uniformed service members who advise the president on military issues. "Early on in my career, I wanted to prove how smart I was and so I did a lot more talking than listening," Cuban said. At the time, Cuban says he was sleeping on the floor of a three-bedroom apartment with six roommates in Dallas. The desire to prove himself sometimes led Cuban to be "too cocky," he says, which could rub people the wrong way. The cable services company wanted to move Cuban's company HDNet, a high-definition TV provider, to a higher price tier. Cuban didn't like the deal and consequently sued DirecTV.

The US began ramping up ammunition production last year when it became clear that the war would drag on far longer than anticipated. But the ammunition will still take “years” to mass produce to acceptable levels, National Security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN Sunday. Ukrainian troops now typically fire between 2,000 and 3,000 artillery shells per day at Russian forces, a US defense official told CNN. It was necessary, though, because of how low US stockpiles are, Sullivan told CNN Sunday. “All of us have had to struggle stimulating our supply chains, some of which went to sleep,” he told CNN.
