To some residents, the challenges seem too complex to blame on the mayor, or feel anything but resignation about the city’s future. Her popularity soared with her steely response to the pandemic after Mardi Gras in 2020 became an early superspreader event. Critics argued that Ms. Cantrell, a Democrat, had become distracted and defensive. They needled her for taking economic development trips to Switzerland, and to the French Riviera at a cost of $43,000 over four days. They criticized her for spending much of her time in a city-owned apartment in the French Quarter typically reserved for official business.

Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. Justice Department said the order, from U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor in Fort Worth, Texas, "has no legal justification and threatens the public health." It asked the court to stop the order from taking effect until it can fully hear the administration's appeal. He found that the federal task force that decides what preventive care must be covered under the federal healthcare law, also known as Obamacare, was unlawfully appointed, voiding all of that task force's determinations since 2010. I SUCK AT SLEEP. In search of solutions, I started with the obvious stuff: an eye mask and a cheap noise machine. But the mask slid off too much, and the “babbling brook” soundscape distracted me more than it soothed me. The key, I realized as I lay on the floor of a New Orleans hotel room trying to escape my snoring partner, was eliminating these sonic interruptions.

Eric Kim has a strategy for how he approaches restaurants: Live life on the edge of the menu. Just because a restaurant is known for one thing doesn’t mean you can’t order something else. Sometimes the oddity on a menu might be the chef’s passion project, which is reason enough to order it. When Mr. Kim visited the city for a friend’s wedding in January, his eyes gravitated toward the citrus-glazed turnips. Who knew that the star of his seafood lunch would be a side dish of turnips?

Gavin Newsom , you might get the impression that the Taliban had just swept Texas and is marching on New Orleans. The potential presidential hopeful earlier this month kicked off a “Campaign for Democracy” to spread a woke message to the oppressed and benighted Americans living in red states such as Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. The irony is that California law bans state-funded travel to 23 states because they’ve adopted policies that lawmakers in Sacramento claim are discriminatory.

HOW DID THE CASE GET TO THE SUPREME COURT? The Biden administration and Danco immediately asked the Supreme Court to overrule the 5th Circuit and impose an emergency stay. WHAT DID THE SUPREME COURT DO? The injunction was not at issue before the Supreme Court, and remains in effect. Once it does come, the losing side will again have the chance to appeal to the 5th Circuit and, eventually, the Supreme Court.
However the 5th Circuit rules, the case will likely continue for months or years. HOW DID THE CASE GET TO THE 5TH CIRCUIT? WHAT COULD THE 5TH CIRCUIT DO? The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is expected to act before the deadline to either grant or reject the requests or further pause the litigation. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. agency that signs off on the safety of food products, drugs and medical devices, approved mifepristone in 2000. Circuit Court of Appeals on April 12 declined to block the curbs ordered by Kacsmaryk. Anti-abortion groups led by the recently formed Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and four anti-abortion doctors sued the FDA in November. The plaintiffs contend that the agency used an unlawful process to approve the drug, which they consider to be dangerous.
At issue is the availability of mifepristone, part of a two-drug regimen that now accounts for more than half of the abortions in the United States. More than five million women have used mifepristone to terminate their pregnancies in the United States, and dozens of other countries have approved the drug for use. added a series of guidelines that eased access to the pill. The restrictions would include blocking patients from receiving the drug by mail. The case could also pave the way for all sorts of challenges to the F.D.A.’s approval of medications.
Supreme Court protects access to abortion pill

CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday protected access to a widely used abortion drug by freezing lower-court rulings that placed restrictions on its usage. How the dispute over medication abortion is ultimately resolved could make it more difficult for women to obtain abortion, even in the states that still allow it. At issue is the scope of FDA’s authority to regulate mifepristone, a drug that the medical community has deemed safe and effective. The next step in the litigation will be a hearing in front of a New Orleans-based federal appeals court on May 17. The appeals court ultimately let stand the government’s approval of the drug, but agreed with Kacsmaryk that access could be limited.
